How to Secure a Home or Small-Business Network Against Common Attacks

A practical, layered guide to securing home Wi-Fi and small-business networks, from router settings and guest access to MFA, updates, remote access, and recovery.

Secure the network in layers: harden the router, separate guest and device traffic, protect important accounts with multifactor authentication, install security updates, limit remote access, and keep recoverable backups. Start with the router; it is the connection point for everything on your network.

1. Harden the router first

Find the router’s model and check whether it still receives security updates. Sign in using the manufacturer’s instructions; menu names vary by brand. For equipment supplied by your internet provider, ask whether firmware updates are automatic. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance recommends the following core settings.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Change both passwords. Replace the router administrator password and the Wi-Fi password. They control different things: the administrator password protects settings, while the Wi-Fi password controls network access. Use unique passwords and avoid personal details, the router brand, or your address in the network name (SSID).
  2. Choose current Wi-Fi encryption. Select WPA3 Personal if available; otherwise use WPA2 Personal. WPA and WEP are outdated and insecure. If the router cannot provide WPA2 or WPA3 after available software updates, consider replacing it.
  3. Install firmware updates. Apply available router updates and turn on automatic updates if the device offers that option.
  4. Keep the firewall enabled. Confirm the router’s firewall is on.
  5. Turn off features you do not use. Disable remote management, WPS, and UPnP unless you need them. Some devices or applications rely on UPnP, so check what depends on it before switching it off.
  6. Save changes and sign out. Log out of the router’s administrator interface when you finish.

When choosing a replacement, compare whether it receives security updates, supports WPA3 or WPA2, offers a guest network and useful device separation, includes a firewall, and is manageable enough that you will keep it configured securely. No particular model is necessary if your existing router remains supported and can use secure settings.

2. Separate visitors, smart devices, and work equipment

Use guest Wi-Fi for visitors

Give visitors access to a guest network rather than sharing the password used by household computers or business devices. This reduces how widely the main password is known. Guest-network behavior differs between routers, so check the manufacturer’s documentation to understand which devices guests can reach; the label alone is not a guarantee of isolation.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Keep higher-risk devices away from sensitive systems

Where the router supports it, put internet-connected devices such as cameras, speakers, and other IoT equipment on a separate network from personal computers or business systems. For a small office, separate work equipment from personal or visitor devices when practical. The FTC’s connected-device guidance and CISA’s home-office guidance cover device settings and network separation.

Use VLANs and firewall rules for more complex offices

Small businesses with multiple teams, sensitive systems, or more advanced network equipment can use VLANs (virtual local area networks) and firewall rules to limit unnecessary communication between device groups. This is an advanced configuration; plan it carefully or use an IT provider, since an overly restrictive rule can disrupt legitimate work. Segmentation reduces exposure between groups but does not make a network impenetrable. CISA’s technical guidance on segmentation and management controls is aimed at a more advanced context.

3. Protect accounts with unique passwords and MFA

Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) for email, cloud storage, administrator accounts, and any remote-access service. These accounts can provide access to other systems or valuable data, so prioritize them. Use a unique password for each account, ideally managed with a reputable password manager.

When a service supports it, prefer a phishing-resistant method such as a physical security key. A security key protects sign-in only for accounts that support it; it does not secure the router or replace other network controls. If a key is not supported, use another MFA method the service offers. Number-matching authenticator prompts are a useful interim option where available. CISA explains business priorities and method choices in its MFA guidance.

4. Patch devices and retire unsupported equipment

Enable automatic updates for operating systems and applications where possible. Keep router and connected-device firmware current as well. Updates can address security flaws that attackers may exploit.

  • Maintain a simple inventory of computers, phones, routers, and connected devices so you know what needs updates.
  • Replace devices that no longer receive security fixes. If immediate replacement is not possible, isolate them from sensitive devices and limit their network access where your equipment allows it.
  • Review unused features and services on connected devices, and turn them off when they are not needed.

FTC guidance covers home connected-device security; CISA’s digital-home guidance also recommends keeping devices and software updated.

5. Reduce exposure from remote access

Turn off router remote administration and other remote services you do not use. For a small business, do not expose Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) directly to the internet. If employees need remote access, use a supported, managed access method protected by MFA, and restrict access to the people who need it. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide discusses remote access, MFA, patching, and logging.

6. Back up data and plan for recovery

Back up important files regularly, preferably automatically, and include data that would be difficult or impossible to recreate. A CISA-hosted small-business tip sheet recommends automatic backups when possible or at least weekly. That is guidance for small businesses, not a universal schedule for every household or organization.

  • Test that you can restore files; a backup is useful only if recovery works.
  • For a business, include backup ownership and recovery steps in a simple incident-response plan.

CISA’s small- and medium-business resources also address backups, encryption, logging, updates, MFA, and phishing. The FTC’s home-computer guidance recommends backing up data that cannot be replaced.

7. Add a small-business security routine

Households can apply the same fundamentals, but a business should assign responsibility so important tasks do not depend on someone remembering them. CISA provides free resources for small and medium-sized businesses.

  • Keep an inventory of devices, software, and accounts.
  • Require MFA for business email, administrative accounts, cloud services, and remote access.
  • Set a routine for applying updates and handling unsupported devices.
  • Maintain protected backups and know who is responsible for restoring business data.
  • Use encryption and logging where appropriate to the business’s systems and risks.
  • Write down whom to contact and what to do if an account, device, or network is compromised.

The FCC’s small-business tip sheet hosted by CISA also covers firewalls, encrypted Wi-Fi, updates, and backup practices, though some of its recommendations are older. These measures are a practical baseline, not a guarantee against every attack.
