To secure a home NAS, give each household member an individual account with access only to the folders and apps they need, keep the NAS and its software updated, and avoid exposing its management interface directly to the internet. If you need remote access, use a supported, restricted method such as a properly configured VPN or a vendor service with access controls. Exact settings depend on your NAS, operating system, router, and ISP.
1. Give each person the access they need—and no more
Start with accounts and permissions. Avoid sharing an administrator login for everyday file access: individual accounts make it possible to grant, review, or revoke access for each person.

- Create a separate account for each household member.
- Grant access only to the shared folders and applications each person needs. Synology DSM lets administrators manage shared-folder and application privileges for individuals or groups; its guidance covers quotas and speed limits too. See Synology’s shared-folder privilege guidance.
- Use groups when several people need the same access, such as a household group with access to shared photos.
- Keep administrative tasks separate from ordinary file use where your NAS allows it. QNAP recommends disabling the default “admin” account and creating a different administrator; Synology also advises deactivating its default admin account where supported. Follow the instructions for your model and software version: QNAP NAS security best practices and Synology NAS security guidance.
- Review accounts periodically and remove access that is no longer needed.
Disabling a default administrator account is not the same as removing administrative capability: make sure you have a separate working administrator account before deactivating the default one.
2. Keep the NAS operating system and apps updated
Check the update controls and release information for your exact NAS model and operating-system version. Install available firmware and application updates, and enable automatic updates if your device offers them and that setting suits your household. QNAP recommends firmware updates and automatic updates in its ransomware-prevention FAQ; its menus and update behavior may differ by model and software version.
#1 Best Overall
- Your Personal Streaming Server - Build your own Netflix-style media library and stream 4K movies, shows and photos to any device without monthly fees
- Create Your Own Cloud - Store your entire photo, video and music collection; access from anywhere with fast 282 MB/s transfer speeds

Choose a time when a restart or brief interruption would be manageable. Before installing a major update, check the vendor’s release notes for your model. Do not assume every device receives the same update or follows the same schedule.
3. Check what your router exposes to the internet
Keep the NAS behind your home router; do not connect its network port directly to an internet-facing modem. QNAP’s security guide puts it plainly: “You should never directly connect the network port of the NAS to the Internet.”

- Supports drives on the model's official compatibility list
- Up to 522/565 MB/s sequential read/write throughput supports stable data transfers.
- Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.
- Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
- Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.
In the router’s settings, review port forwarding rules, UPnP, and any DMZ assignment. Remove rules that expose the NAS when they are not required, and disable UPnP if your network does not need it. Also check the NAS vendor’s router-configuration feature: it may create forwarding rules on your behalf. QNAP advises disabling port forwarding, UPnP, and DMZ for its NAS security recommendations in its security guide. CISA’s home-network guidance likewise recommends software updates and disabling UPnP and remote management; this is general router advice, not NAS-specific configuration documentation.

If you are unsure whether a rule serves another device or service, identify its purpose before removing it. Do not put the NAS in a DMZ or open a port simply to make remote access convenient.

4. Choose a remote-access method deliberately
If you do not need access while away from home, turn off remote-access features and public-facing services you do not use. If you do need it, choose a method supported by your particular NAS and router, then limit access to the accounts or devices that need it.
QNAP describes three options for its devices: a VPN hosted on the router, a VPN hosted on the NAS, and myQNAPcloud Link. The trade-offs below reflect QNAP’s own descriptions, not independent performance testing. They do not establish that these options are available on other brands or every QNAP model.

| QNAP option | Exposure and access | Setup and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Router-hosted VPN | Remote devices connect through the router’s VPN rather than using a direct public connection to the NAS. | Requires a compatible router and VPN configuration. Setup details and hardware support vary. |
| VPN hosted on the NAS | Provides VPN access through the NAS; access should be limited to intended accounts. | Requires configuration on a compatible NAS. QNAP describes VPN methods as involving more setup; features vary by model. |
| myQNAPcloud Link | QNAP describes this as a way to access a NAS without exposing it directly, with access controls. Its FAQ describes Private or Customized device access options. | QNAP characterizes Link as easier to set up but slower than VPN options. Availability and controls are product-specific; see the QNAP FAQ and QNAP security guide. |
For a VPN, use the current instructions for the actual router or NAS software you own. Configuration, compatibility, and available controls differ, and there is no universal setup path for every household network. Avoid enabling a public-facing service unless you understand what it exposes and have a specific need for it.
5. Verify permissions and network settings after changes
After changing accounts, updates, or remote-access settings, check the actual result rather than assuming the configuration took effect.

Synology’s Security Advisor is a built-in DSM app that scans a Synology NAS, checks DSM settings, and provides advice for addressing security weaknesses, according to the Synology Knowledge Center. Treat it as a helpful settings check, not a replacement for appropriate permissions, updates, or a careful review of remote access.
Revisit the review when you add or remove a user, replace the router, install a significant update, or enable a new service. Settings and feature names vary by NAS model and software version; Synology’s cited guidance covers DSM 7 series and legacy versions and was last updated May 27, 2026, while the cited QNAP FAQ was last modified December 16, 2022.
