Choose Google Authenticator if you want codes to sync through a Google Account across Android and iPhone, and you are comfortable making that account part of your recovery setup. Choose Aegis if you use Android and prefer an open-source app with an encrypted vault and backups you control. Neither is a universal security winner: the practical choice depends on your phone, recovery preferences, and how carefully you manage backups.

Which should you choose?
Choose Google Authenticator for convenient sync and broader platform support
Google Authenticator is the more practical choice if you use an iPhone, switch between iOS and Android, or want a simple path to restore codes by signing into the Google Account used in the app. You can also use it without a Google Account; in that mode, codes remain on the device rather than syncing to other devices. Google says codes can be generated without an internet connection or mobile service. Google Account Help

Account-linked sync reduces the need to remember a manual backup routine, but it also makes your Google Account part of the recovery picture. Google recommends keeping additional forms of 2-Step Verification available for your account and suggests passkeys. Google Account Help

Choose Aegis for Android-based local control
Aegis is the better match if you want an Android authenticator whose project publishes its source code and gives you explicit choices for vault backups and exports. It supports imports from Google Authenticator, and its backup model lets you choose a destination rather than relying on Google Account synchronization. Aegis project documentation
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
That control comes with responsibility: you need to know where your backups go, protect any exported token data, and ensure you can access the backup when changing phones. An automatic backup is only as useful as its destination and protection.
How do their security approaches differ?
Google documents encryption in transit and at rest for Authenticator codes synced to a Google Account. The app also offers a Privacy Screen that requires device verification to open. Those controls describe Google’s service and app behavior; they do not eliminate risks from a compromised account or device. Google Account Help

Aegis documents encryption for its vault using AES-256-GCM, password protection using scrypt, biometric unlocking through Android Keystore, and prevention of screen capture. These are useful implementation details, not proof that every backup destination, device, or user password is secure. In particular, exporting to plaintext can expose the underlying secrets if the file is mishandled. Aegis project documentation

A 2023 USENIX Security Symposium paper, “Security and Privacy Failures in Popular 2FA Apps”, examined specific older versions: Google Authenticator v5.10 and Aegis v2.0.3. Its findings are historical context, not a current-version head-to-head audit. The paper also explains that password-derived backup encryption depends substantially on password strength.

How to move Google Authenticator codes to Aegis
Google Authenticator provides a manual QR transfer route, and Aegis lists Google Authenticator as an import source. Keep the old phone and its authenticator entries intact until you have verified the replacement. Google Account Help Aegis project documentation
- Prepare the old app. For Google’s manual transfer, use the old device and the latest version of Google Authenticator. The app can display one or more QR codes for export. Google Account Help
- Import on the new Android phone. In Aegis, use its import flow and select Google Authenticator as the source. Follow the app’s prompts to scan the transfer QR code or codes. Aegis project documentation
- Verify before removing anything. Check several imported accounts by generating a code and confirming it works with the relevant service. Confirm that each account’s recovery methods are still available.
- Set up a protected backup. Choose a destination you can reach if the phone is lost, and prefer an encrypted backup where appropriate. Treat plaintext exports as sensitive credentials and do not leave them exposed.
If you are moving to another Google Authenticator installation instead, signing into the same Google Account syncs codes to the new device. If you use Authenticator without an account, Google’s QR-based manual transfer is the documented alternative. Google Account Help

Does Aegis sync between phones?
The Aegis project materials reviewed describe backups and exports to a user-chosen location, not automatic Google Account synchronization. To use Aegis on a replacement phone, plan to restore or import a backup you have made accessible. Google Authenticator, by contrast, can sync codes after you sign into the associated Google Account. For iPhone support and low-friction sync, Google Authenticator is the straightforward choice. For Android-only use with an encrypted vault and user-managed backups, Aegis offers more explicit local control. Whichever app you choose, protect the account or backup that would restore your codes—and test a migration before retiring the old device.
