Then check your sessions and learn how to handle unexpected sign-in alerts. These steps reduce account risk, but they cannot prevent every mistake or loss.
Secure your password and email account first
Use a password that you do not use anywhere else. A password manager can help you create and store a strong one; Coinbase names 1Password and Dashlane as examples in its account security guidance. Coinbase’s password requirements include at least eight characters, uppercase and lowercase letters, a number, and a symbol, but merely meeting a minimum does not make a password difficult to guess.

Protect the email inbox associated with Coinbase as carefully as the Coinbase account. Coinbase uses email for new-device confirmations, alerts, and support communication. Turn on two-step verification for the email account, review its forwarding rules and filters, and check that recovery addresses and recognized devices belong to you. An attacker who controls your inbox may be able to interfere with account alerts or recovery.
Choose two-step verification you can recover
Coinbase requires two-step verification (2-step verification). In Coinbase’s 2-step verification setup guidance, it recommends stronger options and supports adding more than one method, so you have another way to sign in if a device or key is unavailable. Its recommended combinations include two security keys, a passkey plus a security key, or a passkey plus push notification. Coinbase also supports authenticator apps that generate time-based one-time passwords (TOTP).

| Method | Useful consideration | Recovery and compatibility |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey | One of Coinbase’s recommended stronger options; can be paired with a security key or push notification. | Set up another method in advance in case the device or passkey is unavailable. Check compatibility for your devices and any connected apps. |
| Hardware security key | Coinbase recommends security keys. Look for WebAuthn/FIDO2 support and compatibility with the browsers and mobile devices you use. | A second registered key can be a backup. Coinbase says it cannot recover or replace lost keys; some connected third-party apps may not support them. |
| Authenticator app (TOTP) | An alternative that generates sign-in codes on a device. | Keep a separate sign-in option available and follow Coinbase’s setup and recovery instructions. |
| Push notification | Coinbase lists it as an option and includes it in a recommended passkey-plus-push combination. | It depends on access to the relevant device and Coinbase app; keep another method available. |
| SMS | Coinbase describes SMS as its least secure 2-step method; it is not equivalent to a passkey or security key. | Prefer a stronger available method and add a backup before relying on a single sign-in route. |
For a physical key, Coinbase names YubiKey as an example, not a required brand. Its security key recommendations emphasize mobile-browser compatibility and WebAuthn/FIDO2 support. Register a second key or another supported method, then test your sign-in before depending on one device. Coinbase’s troubleshooting guidance warns: “Coinbase can’t recover or replace lost keys.”
Limit where crypto can be sent
Coinbase’s address-book allowlist restricts sends to addresses you have saved. Managing the feature requires 2-step verification, and Coinbase says a newly added address becomes available for sends after 48 hours. Add intended destinations before you need to trade or transfer, then carefully check the address and the asset’s network before saving it. Coinbase’s instructions note that EVM assets should use an EVM address.

- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required

- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Allowlisting adds friction to sending funds to a new destination; it does not make every transfer safe. It cannot stop you from approving a harmful transfer or sending to an address or network you selected incorrectly. See Coinbase’s current allowlist instructions before changing the setting.

Review sessions, devices, and app access
Look through your active sessions, confirmed devices, and connected apps. Revoke access you do not recognize, and remove old devices or app connections you no longer use. Coinbase’s account security guidance also describes PIN or biometric protections in its mobile app; enable them if they suit how you use your phone.

Reach Coinbase through a bookmark you created or by entering its address yourself, especially when a message claims your account needs urgent attention. Do not use links or phone numbers from unexpected messages, search ads, forums, or social-media posts to resolve an account problem.
Handle an unexpected sign-in email safely
A device-confirmation email you did not expect may mean someone used your password and 2-step code to start signing in. Do not approve a request you did not initiate. Instead, open Coinbase using your bookmark and take these steps:

Understand what Coinbase One Account Protection does not guarantee
Coinbase describes Account Protection as a benefit for eligible Coinbase One subscribers in supported regions who use a passkey or security key. Its Account Protection overview describes coverage for qualifying unauthorized crypto transfers, while excluding transactions you authorized after being deceived, mistakes, and fraudulent activity. Coinbase says the benefit is not insurance and does not cover many losses that insurance is meant to cover. Check the eligibility rules, limits, and current terms in your account; the benefit is not guaranteed reimbursement and is not a substitute for account controls.
