What is the next announced Union Pacific steam-train event?
Union Pacific announced on October 5, 2026, that No. 4014 and No. 844 are scheduled to run together on a charitable fundraising excursion from Greeley to Denver on November 21, 2026. Later that day, the locomotives are scheduled for a public display at Denver Union Station. The company says the display is free and open to the public; riding the Greeley-to-Denver train is a separate, ticketed fundraiser benefiting Make-A-Wish. Check the official steam schedule and event details for changes before making plans.

This is the first announced public reunion of the two locomotives since their 2019 joint appearance. Big Boy No. 4014 is the only Big Boy still operating, while No. 844 is Union Pacific’s last steam locomotive built for the railroad.
Ticket dates are not a guarantee of current availability
Union Pacific announced that ticket sales for museum patrons were to begin October 16, 2026, with any remaining tickets opening to the general public October 19. Those dates have passed; they do not establish that tickets are still available. Check the event page for current inventory and terms. Viewing the Denver display does not require a ride ticket.

How to find an appearance near you
- Check the official schedule. Open Union Pacific’s steam schedule and look for future dates, cities, and public-display information. Do not rely on old tour pages or past stop lists as evidence of an upcoming appearance.
- Follow the live location tool. Use the Big Boy tracker to follow No. 4014’s location and route when tracking is available. The tracker helps with current location; the schedule is the place to check planned public stops and event details.
- Compare the event location with your own. Since “near you” depends on where you are and how far you can travel, compare the listed city and date with your starting point and travel options. No location was specified here, so a particular local stop cannot be identified.
- Sign up for future notices. Join the free Official Union Pacific Steam Club for announcements about No. 844, No. 4014, tour stops, and excursions.
- Recheck before leaving. Schedules and operating plans can change. Confirm the event page shortly before travel and follow its current instructions.
Union Pacific says the 2026 coast-to-coast tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary is complete. Its earlier stops—including Sacramento, Ogden, Omaha, West Chicago, Buffalo, Scranton, Philadelphia, Altoona, Fostoria, and St. Louis—are past events, not upcoming opportunities.
Can you ride Big Boy or No. 844?
Sometimes, but a public display is not a passenger excursion. Union Pacific describes ride opportunities as rare charitable fundraisers; when offered, they may be one-day, one-way segments. The company lists organized fundraiser rides on its steam schedule. For the November 21, 2026, event, the Greeley-to-Denver ride requires a ticket, while the Denver Union Station display is free.

Do not assume a ride ticket or free viewing includes access to the locomotive cab, support cars, or other railroad equipment. Access is governed by the event’s specific rules.

What to expect at a public display
Union Pacific says displays are generally free unless the event schedule says otherwise. Popular events can involve capacity limits and waiting. The company’s display FAQ notes that guests may need to stand for extended periods, surfaces may be uneven, and there is no designated seating. Check the weather, dress for outdoor conditions, and stay hydrated; water bottles are allowed under the FAQ’s guidance.

Whistle-stops are different from extended displays. Union Pacific described its 2026 western-leg whistle-stops as generally lasting 15–30 minutes, but that was a general duration, not a guaranteed viewing window, and those events have passed.

- Stay at least 25 feet from the tracks when viewing or photographing the locomotive, as Union Pacific instructs.
- Never stand on the tracks or ballast for a photo or video, and never climb on a locomotive or other railroad equipment.
- Follow event-specific directions, barriers, and posted restrictions. Union Pacific’s display FAQ says drones are not allowed during display days and gives additional distance guidance for a locomotive in motion.
Read the current display FAQ and event information before attending, since event instructions can differ.

Can you visit the Cheyenne Steam Shop?
No, not as a walk-in visitor. Union Pacific’s Cheyenne Steam Shop is within an active railroad facility and is not open for casual public visits. The Cheyenne Depot Museum periodically arranges Steam Shop tours as fundraising events; check with the museum for whether a tour is currently scheduled. Big Boy No. 4004 is permanently displayed at Holliday Park, but it is a different locomotive from operating No. 4014.
