To search Reddit effectively, first choose what you want to find—posts, communities, comments, media, or people—then set the scope, refine the query with filters, and select a sort and time range that fit your goal. For a summary across posts and communities, Reddit’s AI search can help, but follow its citations and verify important claims at the source.
Choose what you want to search for
Reddit search offers separate result types for posts, communities (subreddits), comments, media, and people. Choosing the right type first reduces irrelevant results. Reddit’s help page describes these options in How does Reddit search work?

- Posts: Find submissions about a topic.
- Communities: Discover subreddits focused on a subject.
- Comments: Look for answers, recommendations, or discussion within posts.
- Media: Find image, video, or GIF results.
- People: Search for a specific redditor. Reddit says this filter is unavailable when searching within a community.
As you type in Reddit’s search bar, suggestions can surface communities and profiles. Choose a suggestion to open it, or select “Search for [query]” to see full results, as described in Reddit’s search guidance.
How do I search within a subreddit?
Open the community, then use the search bar from that page. Reddit says this scopes results to that community; its feature guide describes a community-name pill in the search bar and an option to switch back to results from all of Reddit. Check the scope indicator before searching so you know whether you are searching one subreddit or Reddit-wide.

For example, if you want posts about a laptop in a particular community, navigate to that subreddit first and search for the model name. If you want to compare discussions across Reddit, use the scope control to search all of Reddit instead. Reddit’s help documentation explains the community-page workflow and scope control in How does Reddit search work? and its Search Reddit feature guide.
How do I filter Reddit search by author, flair, or site?
Add a field filter to narrow results by a specific attribute. Keep the value directly after the colon: write author:cats, not author: cats. For a multiword value, put the value in quotation marks, as in title:"kitten gif".

Use filters to state where a term should appear, not just which words should appear somewhere in a result. Reddit documents filters and operators in its search help.

How do I search Reddit for a phrase or combine terms?
Put a multiword phrase in quotation marks when using it as a field value, such as title:"kitten gif". Reddit also supports uppercase Boolean operators: AND, OR, and NOT. Use them to control how terms relate:
cats AND dogsrequires both terms.cats OR dogsmatches either term.cats NOT dogsexcludes results containing dogs.
Use parentheses to group a more complex query, for example (cats OR dogs) AND adoption. Reddit warns that combinations of Boolean operators can produce unexpected results unless grouped, so keep queries simple and check whether the results match the intended logic.

Choose a sort and time range for the task
Post results can be sorted by Relevance, Hot, Top, New, or Comment Count. Relevance is the default; Reddit says it considers relative word rarity, post age, and votes or comments. It is the only listed sort that takes word rarity into account. Select the sort based on what you need rather than assuming one ranking is best for every search.
| Sort | Useful when you want |
|---|---|
| Relevance | Results Reddit ranks as relevant to your query, including a factor for relative word rarity. |
| Hot | Posts with recent activity. |
| Top | Posts with high votes or comment activity. |
| New | The newest posts. |
| Comment Count | Posts with substantial discussion volume. |
Reddit lists time ranges of all time, past year, month, week, 24 hours, and hour for post search. Pair them with your sort: for a recent development, try New with a short time window; for an older, widely discussed answer, try Top with a broader range. Comment results have Relevance, Top, and New sorts.
Reddit describes the available sorts and time windows in its search help.

When the useful information is likely to be in replies rather than post titles, switch to comment results. You can also search comments within an individual post:
- In the Reddit app: Open the post and tap the search icon to search its comments.
- On desktop: Use the comments search bar below the comment box.
Reddit documents these options in its search help. Search results can help locate a discussion, but read the surrounding thread before treating an isolated comment as a complete answer.

When should I use Reddit AI search?
Use AI search when you want a natural-language question answered with a synthesis of relevant posts and comments across communities. Type your question and select Ask. Reddit says the generated response includes inline citations linking to source posts, comments, and communities. Open those links to see the original discussions; a summary is a discovery aid, not a substitute for checking the source.
Reddit Help’s page, “Reddit’s AI search,” updated July 30, 2026, warns: “In addition, the information presented in AI search comes from redditor posts and comments and hasn’t been vetted or endorsed by Reddit.” For legal, medical, or financial questions, verify claims with reliable sources outside Reddit as well. AI search availability and usage limits can change. The same help page stated that, at its July 30, 2026 update, logged-out users could ask up to 10 questions per week, logged-in users up to 50 per day, and Premium subscribers up to 100 per day; Reddit notes that limits are subject to change. See Reddit’s AI search for the current details.
