Use your browser’s built-in Tab search to find a page by keyword without first switching to the window that contains it. Chrome and Edge both offer this on desktop; the steps and what appears in results differ.
Search tabs in Chrome on desktop
- Open Tab search: select Tab search in the tab strip, or press Ctrl+Shift+A on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+A on Mac.
- Enter a keyword: type a word from the site or page title you are looking for.
- Open the match: select the result to go to that tab.
You can also start from the address bar: type @tabs, press Tab or Space, enter your search terms, then select the matching tab. These shortcuts and steps are documented for desktop Chrome by Google Chrome Help.
Find a tab in Microsoft Edge
- Open Tab search in Edge.
- Type a keyword from the page or site.
- Select the result to open the tab.
Microsoft says Edge Tab search scans all open Edge windows, so you can find a tab without changing to its window first. It also includes recently closed tabs. Regular and InPrivate results are shown separately. Microsoft’s feature page says Tab search is unavailable on mobile and notes that availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version. If the tab is open in another Edge window, Edge’s documented cross-window search is useful. For Chrome, use Tab search or the @tabs address-bar route; the cited Google help documents the search steps and shortcuts but does not specify whether results span other windows. Current official instructions for Firefox and Safari are not established here, so these Chrome and Edge steps should not be taken as guidance for those browsers.
