How to Reset Network Settings on an iPhone Without Losing Personal Data

Use Reset Network Settings to clear iPhone connectivity configurations without erasing photos, messages, apps, or files. Here’s the menu path and what to expect.

To reset only your iPhone’s network settings, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes network configurations, not your photos, messages, apps, or files. Be ready to reconnect to Wi-Fi and enter network passwords again. Do not choose Erase All Content and Settings unless you intend to erase the phone.

Reset network settings on an iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Tap Reset Network Settings and confirm if prompted.

Menu wording can vary slightly by iOS version. Check that the option you select says Reset Network Settings: the reset menu also contains commands with broader effects. Apple’s guide explains that iPhone settings can be returned to their defaults without erasing content (Apple Support: Reset iPhone settings to their defaults).

What the network reset deletes—and what it leaves alone

Reset Network Settings clears network configuration; it does not erase personal content. Photos, messages, apps, and files remain on the iPhone. The main practical consequence is that you will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks you used before and enter their passwords again. Wi-Fi switches off and back on during the reset, so the phone disconnects temporarily.

Settings and details that can change

  • Previously used Wi-Fi networks and their saved configurations are removed.
  • VPN settings that were not installed by a configuration profile or mobile device management (MDM) are removed. Apple’s Wi-Fi guidance also says the reset affects cellular, VPN, and APN settings.
  • The iPhone name set in Settings > General > About returns to “iPhone.”
  • Manually trusted certificates become untrusted.
  • Cellular data roaming may be turned off.

These effects are separate from deleting personal files. If you rely on a VPN, custom cellular settings, or a manually trusted certificate, make sure you can restore the required configuration before resetting.

Work or school iPhones: check management settings first

Network settings installed through a configuration profile or MDM are handled differently from settings you added yourself. Apple says to remove the relevant profile or management enrollment through Settings > General > VPN & Device Management to remove settings it provides. Removing a profile or enrollment can also remove other settings, accounts, or certificates supplied by it.

If your iPhone is managed by a school or employer, ask the IT department or network administrator before changing profiles or resetting network settings. They can tell you whether the device needs a specific Wi-Fi, VPN, or cellular configuration.

Choose the right reset option

Option What it changes Personal content
Reset Network Settings Removes network configurations and has the effects described above. Not erased.
Reset All Settings Resets a wider range of settings, including network settings. Apple says data and media are not deleted.
Erase All Content and Settings Erases content and settings from the iPhone. Erased. Do not select this for a network-only reset.

Apple documents these as distinct choices. If your goal is to address connectivity while keeping personal content, select only Reset Network Settings.

Try simpler troubleshooting before resetting

Apple recommends restarting first for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or other system issues, and says to reset network settings only if other Wi-Fi solutions fail. Its guidance is available in If you can’t connect to Wi-Fi on your iPhone or iPad and If your iPhone or iPad is running slow.
