If the mouse supports horizontal scrolling, Windows lets you set how far each tilt moves the content in the legacy Mouse Properties Wheel tab. The setting does not add horizontal-scroll capability to a mouse that lacks it, and individual apps may respond differently.
Set the horizontal scroll amount in Windows
Windows places this control in Mouse Properties rather than the main Mouse settings page. Microsoft says the horizontal-scroll amount applies when the mouse supports horizontal scrolling.

- On Windows 11: Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings.
- On Windows 10: Open Settings > Devices > Mouse > Additional mouse options.
- In the Mouse Properties window, select the Wheel tab.
- Set the number of characters to scroll horizontally when you tilt the wheel left or right, then apply the change.
These paths and the hardware requirement are documented in Microsoft’s mouse settings guidance. If your mouse has no tilt wheel or other documented horizontal-scroll control, changing this setting alone will not give it that capability.

Use the tilt wheel in an app
Move the pointer over content that can scroll sideways and tilt the wheel left or right. Microsoft’s Win32 user-experience guidance describes the intended action simply: “Tilting the mouse wheel scrolls the object horizontally.” The same guidance says wheel input acts on the most specific scrollable control under the pointer, so placement matters; an app or control may handle the input differently. See Microsoft’s mouse interaction guidance.

What to try if horizontal scrolling does not work
- Check the mouse: Confirm that its specifications or documentation identify tilt-wheel or horizontal-scroll support. The Windows control is conditional on compatible hardware.
- Check the target: Put the pointer over a region with content extending beyond its visible width. Try another horizontally scrollable area in the same app to distinguish a control-specific behavior from a mouse issue.
- Check app behavior: Windows supports horizontal wheel input, but an application is not guaranteed to respond to it. The Windows API includes the
MOUSEEVENTF_HWHEELinput flag; that defines an input capability, not universal app support. See Microsoft’s MOUSEINPUT documentation.
Alternatives for remapping or app-specific behavior
If you need a custom mapping or a workaround for a particular window, third-party tools expose additional options. These are alternatives to try, not guaranteed fixes for every app.
AutoHotkey
AutoHotkey documents WheelLeft and WheelRight as hotkeys, allowing scripts to respond to horizontal wheel events. Its documentation establishes that the events can be addressed; it does not establish a universal Shift-plus-wheel mapping or guarantee that any particular script will work in every application. See AutoHotkey’s wheel hotkey documentation.

X-Mouse Button Control
X-Mouse Button Control documents horizontal-tilt settings and a Scroll Message option that sends WM_HSCROLL or WM_VSCROLL messages directly to a window. Its guide says this approach works with some windows, so treat it as an app-dependent option. See X-Mouse Button Control’s guide.

| Approach | What it depends on | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in tilt-wheel setting | A mouse that supports horizontal scrolling and an app/control that responds to the input | Simple sideways scrolling with compatible hardware |
| AutoHotkey remapping | A script responding to the documented WheelLeft or WheelRight events; behavior can vary by app |

| X-Mouse Button Control | Its tilt or message-based options, with the latter working only in some windows | Users who want to configure mouse behavior for particular windows |
If the mouse cannot generate tilt input, a tilt-wheel mouse is the direct hardware option. If it can, start with Windows’ Wheel tab before trying a script or utility.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The PC continues to work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes after that date. The mouse-settings path above describes where the control is found; it does not change Windows 10’s support status. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
