If that coax path is missing or unsuitable—or you want a direct cable installation—running Ethernet is the clearer choice. The right option depends on your home’s wiring, equipment, installation constraints, and the speed you actually need.
What “Ethernet over coax” means
Ethernet over coax usually means using MoCA-compatible adapters to carry local network traffic across existing coaxial cable. Coax alone does not become an Ethernet connection: an adapter connects to a router’s Ethernet port and the coax at one end, then converts the signal back to Ethernet at the destination. You can connect a device there, or use an Ethernet switch to connect several devices.

The Multimedia over Coax Alliance describes MoCA as a way to leverage coax already inside a home or building. Its MoCA Home 2.5 specification lists 2.5 Gbps MAC throughput and less than 2.5 ms average one-way latency. Those are technology specifications, not guaranteed internet speeds or measurements of a particular home. Adapter port speeds, coax layout, other network traffic, and equipment compatibility can limit actual performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow the two options compare
| Consideration | MoCA over existing coax | New Ethernet run |
|---|---|---|
| When it fits | Usable coax already connects the rooms, and the service equipment and adapters are compatible. | A suitable cable route can be installed and terminated between the locations. |
| Installation | Can avoid routing a new cable when the coax connections are already in place; requires compatible adapters and a suitable coax layout. | Requires routing and terminating a new cable, which may involve more work or disruption. |
| Connection type | Ethernet at each adapter, with network traffic carried over coax between them. | A direct wired Ethernet cable between the network connection points. |
| Speed considerations | Check the adapter’s Ethernet port speed and the coax network. The 2.5 Gbps MAC figure is a MoCA Home 2.5 specification, not an end-to-end guarantee. | Depends on the cable, run, terminations, connected ports, and installation. Choose these for the target speed and conditions rather than assuming one cable category suits every home. |
| Cost | Depends on the adapter and any coax changes the home needs. | Depends on cable, routing, terminations, and whether installation is professional. |
There is no universal cost winner: the home’s layout and the actual equipment and installation determine which is less expensive.
#1 Best Overall
- Faster than Wi-Fi: The ECB7250 uses your home's coax cables to deliver internet speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, surpassing Wi-Fi speeds. Actual speeds can be affected by various factors like cable quality and other MoCA devices on the network.
- Get the Best Speeds and Bandwidth: The 2.5Gbps network ethernet port for high-speed internet is ideal for 4K streaming, gaming, and remote work. It's backwards compatible with 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet connections.
- Skip the Wi-Fi! Use existing coax cables for wired Ethernet connections in your home. MoCA Adapter 2.5 delivers faster, more reliable speeds than Wi-Fi for up to 16 nodes on one network. You can also use these to connect remote Wi-Fi access points.
- Check MoCA Compatibility: You will need 1 ECB or a MoCA compatible router or 2+ ECBs for non-MoCA routers. Most FiOS routers have MoCA built-in. Connect ECBs in each room with coax for wired access and switches to the ECBs for more ethernet connections.
- Device Compatibility: This MoCA adapter for ethernet over coax works with most devices and routers with an ethernet port. However, some DOCSIS 3.1 modems might conflict (frequency overlap) and cause random disconnects. Check with your ISP for a fix.
Choose MoCA when existing coax is usable
MoCA is a practical candidate if coax outlets already reach the rooms where you want wired devices or a Wi-Fi access point. The Alliance identifies Wi-Fi backhaul, streaming, and gaming among MoCA use cases; those describe possible applications, not a promise of specific performance in your home.
Before buying adapters, check the physical coax path and the equipment connected to it. A coax outlet in each room does not by itself establish that those connections form a usable network path. Verify that the router does not already support MoCA, that any required splitters or other coax components support the relevant frequencies, and that the adapter’s Ethernet port matches your desired link speed. Follow the adapter maker’s instructions for your specific layout.

- ⚠️ NETWORK ADAPTER - NOT A MODEM OR ROUTER: This device extends your EXISTING internet through your home's coax cables. It works WITH your current modem and router, not as a replacement. Connects to your router via Ethernet, then uses coax outlets to create wired network connections in other rooms. Perfect for streaming, gaming, and home offices where you need reliable wired connections.
- 🚨 DOES NOT WORK WITH AT&T U-VERSE OR SATELLITE TV WIRING: ❌ AT&T U-verse uses HPNA technology which conflicts with MoCA - this product will NOT work with U-verse service. ❌ If your home was EVER wired for DirecTV, Dish Network, or AT&T U-verse satellite service, MoCA will HIGHLY LIKELY NOT WORK. Satellite/U-verse installations reconfigure coax wiring by isolating outlets or disconnecting them from the main splitter. Even if you no longer have these services, the wiring changes usually remain.
- ✅ COMPATIBLE INTERNET SERVICES - IF COAX IS PROPERLY WIRED: Works with Cable internet (Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, Optimum, Mediacom), Fiber internet (Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, Frontier Fiber), DSL, or other non-U-verse services. Your internet type doesn't matter - what matters is that your coax outlets are interconnected through a main splitter (standard cable TV configuration, NOT satellite or U-verse wiring). Delivers up to 1 Gbps speeds.
- 🔌 REQUIRED: INTERCONNECTED COAX NETWORK: All coax outlets must connect to a central splitter for MoCA to work. ❌ WILL NOT WORK with: AT&T U-verse service (uses conflicting HPNA technology), Satellite TV wiring (DirecTV/Dish/U-verse satellite), isolated coax runs not connected to a splitter, or homes with no coax outlets. ✅ COMPATIBILITY TEST: If you previously had traditional cable TV service and could watch TV from multiple room outlets, your wiring is likely compatible.
- 🔧 POE FILTER - CABLE INTERNET USERS ONLY: If you have cable internet with a DOCSIS 3.1 or 4.0 "high-split" modem (common with Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox), you MUST install a Point of Entry (POE) filter at your main cable entry point or MoCA will NOT function properly. The filter prevents interference from high-split cable modems. Fiber internet and DSL users do NOT need a POE filter. U-verse users cannot use this product regardless of filter.
The Alliance’s certified-products listing includes Ethernet-to-coax products. Certification checks compliance and interoperability, but it does not prove that a particular product will work with every provider’s equipment, modem, splitter, home wiring arrangement, or Ethernet port speed.
Choose a new Ethernet run when you need a direct cable path
Running Ethernet makes sense when coax does not connect the required rooms, the coax setup is unsuitable, or you prefer a direct cable installation. It avoids MoCA conversion adapters, but you need a workable route and appropriate cable terminations. The right cable choice depends on the target speed, run length, installation method, and applicable local requirements; no single cable category is established as best for every household.

Consider the full route before committing: where the cable must enter and exit, how it will be secured or concealed, and whether the terminations can be completed properly. If the route is difficult or local requirements apply, get qualified installation advice.
Make the decision in four checks
- Map the rooms. Identify where the router is and which rooms need a wired endpoint or Wi-Fi backhaul.
- Inspect the existing coax. Confirm whether the coax connections actually link those locations and whether the connected components suit the intended MoCA setup.
- Check link speeds. Compare the MoCA adapter’s Ethernet port—or the Ethernet ports on the devices—with the speed you want. Do not treat a MoCA standard’s MAC throughput figure as a promised device or internet speed.
- Compare the real installation. Weigh the adapters and any coax changes against the cable route, terminations, labor, and disruption of a new Ethernet run. Costs and effort depend on the house, so get installation-specific estimates where needed.
What the published figures do—and do not—tell you
The MoCA Alliance’s installation best-practices document gives up to 1 Gbps actual MAC throughput for MoCA 2.0 and up to 2.5 Gbps actual MAC throughput for MoCA 2.5. These are figures for the technologies, not a controlled comparison with newly installed Ethernet or a measurement of your home’s end-to-end performance. The document’s publication date is not established here. Check the adapter’s port specifications and your complete network path when comparing products.

- ⚠️ NOT A MODEM OR ROUTER - NETWORK ADAPTER ONLY: This is a MoCA network adapter that extends your existing network using coax cables. It does NOT provide internet service and does NOT replace your modem or router. You must have an existing internet connection and router to use this product.
- ⚠️ SATELLITE WIRING INCOMPATIBILITY: If your home was ever wired for satellite TV (DirecTV, Dish Network), the satellite company likely cut or disconnected your in-home coax network. This product will NOT work with cut or isolated coax wiring. Before purchasing, verify your coax outlets are interconnected—if you previously had satellite service, ask your current provider if they reconnected your home’s coax network.
- ❌ NOT COMPATIBLE WITH AT&T FIBER: AT&T Fiber’s implementation causes signal interference with MoCA. Works with all other internet types (Cable, Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, etc.) as long as your home has an active, interconnected coax network.
- ✅ WIRING REQUIREMENTS - VERIFY BEFORE BUYING: Requires coax outlets (round screw-on connectors, NOT satellite F-connectors) in multiple rooms that connect to a main splitter. Does NOT work with isolated coax runs, phone lines (RJ11), or Ethernet cables. Check that your coax outlets are part of an interconnected network, not separate isolated runs
- EXTENDS YOUR NETWORK: Converts your home’s coax cable wiring into high-speed ethernet connections. Perfect for connecting devices in rooms far from your router without running new cables. Achieves up to 2.5 Gbps speeds over existing coax. WORKS WITH: Cable internet (Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, etc.) and most fiber services (Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, etc.).
The same distinction applies to latency: the Alliance lists less than 2.5 ms average one-way latency for MoCA Home 2.5 as a specification. It is not a measured result for a particular installation.
