Scroll through the page before taking a full-page screenshot. Lazy-loaded images may not be fetched until they approach the viewport, so neither the page’s load event nor a full-page capture guarantees that offscreen images are ready. Trigger loading by scrolling, wait for the relevant content to settle, check important images, then capture and inspect the result.
Why a full-page screenshot can still miss images
A full-page screenshot captures the scrollable document area; it does not necessarily cause every image in that area to load. With native lazy loading, the browser defers fetching an image until it reaches a browser-calculated distance from the viewport. That distance is not one universal fixed value. MDN’s image reference describes loading="lazy" as deferring an image until it reaches a distance from the viewport defined by the browser.

The page’s load event is not a reliable readiness check for lazy-loaded images: some may not have been requested yet. Likewise, network-idle navigation can be useful, but does not prove that later scrolling or application logic will not trigger more requests. Playwright’s fullPage option specifies capture extent, not a guarantee that site-specific content has loaded.
Manual workflow for one-off documentation
- Set the browser state first. Open the page at the viewport size and in the state you need to document. Sign in, handle consent as appropriate, and choose the responsive layout before scrolling if those details matter to the record.
- Scroll down in overlapping steps. Move through the whole document, pausing after each step so newly eligible images and sections can be requested and rendered. If the page grows as you scroll, continue until the intended content has appeared; reaching the bottom once may not be enough on an infinite-scroll page.
- Return to the top if needed. Some capture tools start from the current scroll position or need a known starting point. Reset the page to the top when that applies.
- Capture the full page or the required segments. Use the browser’s full-page capture option where available, or capture segments if that better preserves the content you need.
- Inspect the saved result. Check at readable zoom for blank image slots, missing lower sections, duplicated sticky UI, and layout shifts. Keep the viewport, browser state, and capture date with the documentation when repeatability matters.
Automate the scroll-and-check preparation with Playwright
Playwright supports fullPage: true for capturing the full scrollable page. Prepare the page before using that option: navigate, scroll to trigger deferred content, wait for the site’s relevant images or sections, and then take the screenshot. The following runnable outline uses Playwright’s JavaScript API; install the package with npm install playwright and set URL to the page you are documenting.

The 250 ms pauses and 20-pass limit are starting points, not universal readiness guarantees. Tune them to the page, and add a site-specific wait for important image selectors or content when possible. The image-state check reports ordinary img elements that are incomplete or have no natural width; it cannot validate every background image, canvas, or custom rendering technique.
Playwright documents the full-page screenshot option at its screenshot guide. Full-page capture extent and page readiness are separate concerns: inspect the output even when the script completes.

When Puppeteer or network-idle navigation is involved
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents Page.screenshot() and demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2'. That can be a useful navigation condition, but it is not proof that every offscreen image or application-generated section is ready. Scroll through the page, check relevant content, and inspect the saved output. See Puppeteer’s screenshot guide.
Troubleshoot missing or inconsistent images
- Images below the fold are blank: scroll through the page before capturing. Lazy loading can postpone their requests until they approach the viewport.
- The page’s
loadevent already fired: do not treat that event as proof of lazy-image completion. Check the images or scroll to trigger their requests. - Network idle occurred but content is missing: network idle describes a period in navigation; interaction-triggered requests can happen later. Verify the relevant image state and requests rather than extending a generic wait indefinitely.
- An image remains missing after scrolling: inspect whether its request failed or was blocked, and whether the site uses a deferred source or custom JavaScript. A longer screenshot delay will not fix a failed request or broken page logic.
- The page uses infinite scroll or virtualization: document height may grow as you move down, or only a moving subset of content may exist in the DOM. Keep revealing content and verify that the specific sections you need are present; there is no universal capture procedure for every custom implementation.
- The layout changes during the pass: sticky headers, animations, or inserted content can affect the final image. Use a site-appropriate method and preserve the viewport and browser state for reproducibility.
For diagnosis, inspect the image’s complete property and naturalWidth, and check actual network requests. MDN documents the image complete property; Chrome DevTools explains how to inspect network activity and associate loading frames with requests.
