To screenshot a page behind a CAPTCHA, open it in a normal browser, complete the challenge as the site requests, and capture the page after it loads. If you need to document the CAPTCHA itself, take the screenshot before submitting it. A screenshot tool records what is rendered; it does not verify or bypass the challenge.
Choose which page state to capture

For a page you do not control, use the site’s ordinary access flow. Do not treat changing a browser setting, user agent, or screenshot service as a way to get around anti-abuse checks. Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation states that changing the user agent does not bypass bot protection (Cloudflare Browser Run documentation).

Take the screenshot in a browser
- Open the page in a current browser and wait for the CAPTCHA to appear.
- If the challenge is the subject of the screenshot, capture it before interacting with it. Otherwise, follow its displayed instructions and complete it.
- For a post-login screenshot, sign in normally and wait until the destination page has finished rendering.
- Use the browser or operating system screenshot feature to capture the visible screen. If you need a whole long page or a specific component, use a tool that supports full-page or element capture.
Playwright documents three useful scopes: viewport, a selected element, and full page. Its screenshots are useful for documenting visual layout, canvas or chart content, and bugs; they complement rather than replace accessibility snapshots (Playwright screenshot documentation).

- Viewport: captures what is currently visible, usually the simplest choice for showing a CAPTCHA or a specific step in the flow.
- Element: captures a selected component, such as the CAPTCHA widget, when the capture tool supports targeting an element.
- Full page: captures a long page beyond the currently visible viewport. This can help document a post-login page, but is usually unnecessary for a challenge occupying only part of the screen.
JavaScript-rendered content must have appeared before you capture it. A full-page option does not itself mean that an unfinished page or challenge has loaded.

For developers testing a CAPTCHA integration
If you own the site or have authorization to test it, use the provider’s test setup rather than attempting to defeat a live challenge.
Google reCAPTCHA
Google documents separate v3 test keys and v2 test keys that always pass verification. Google warns that the v2 test widget displays a warning so these keys are not used for production traffic. Keep test credentials and test configuration out of production (Google reCAPTCHA FAQ).

Troubleshoot a CAPTCHA that will not load or complete
- Update the browser: Google recommends supported, recent browser versions for its reCAPTCHA guidance; requirements may differ for other providers.
- Check JavaScript: Google lists enabled JavaScript as a troubleshooting step for its widget.
- Disable conflicting plugins temporarily: Google suggests checking whether browser plugins interfere with the challenge.
- Contact the site: If the widget still fails, Google’s guidance notes that the site’s integration may be faulty and advises contacting its webmaster (Google reCAPTCHA user FAQ).
Check privacy before sharing a screenshot
A screenshot may show account details, personal information, or security prompts. Before using an extension or cloud capture service, find out whether the image stays on your device or is uploaded, and who can open a shared link. Screencap says local capture and offline OCR remain in the browser or extension; its optional upload sends image bytes to its service, and anyone with the resulting public link can view and download the image (Screencap privacy policy). Review the current policy and sharing settings before uploading sensitive material.

CAPTCHA is intended to help distinguish people from automated software. W3C expands the acronym as “Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart.” Its accessibility note discusses barriers that some challenges can pose for blind, deaf, hard-of-hearing, low-vision, and cognitively disabled people. The note was updated in 2009 and says its underlying guidance may not reflect current best practices, so it is historical context rather than a current quantitative assessment (W3C introduction to CAPTCHA accessibility).
