Fix Selenium Screenshots That Show a Cookie Settings Modal Instead of the Webpage

Selenium screenshots capture the browser state at call time. Choose the intended consent scenario, interact with the site's real controls, and wait for the resulting page state before capturing.

Selenium captures the page exactly as it appears at the moment the screenshot runs. If a cookie settings modal is still open, the screenshot will include it. Decide whether the test should show a first visit or a post-consent page, then interact with the site’s actual consent controls or restore a known, site-specific consent state. Wait for the resulting page state before capturing; navigation completion alone may be too early.

Why the modal appears in the screenshot

A screenshot records the current browser state, not an idealized version of the page. Selenium does not choose or submit a site’s cookie consent for you. If the modal appears when the screenshot command executes, it is part of the captured page. Selenium’s screenshot documentation describes capturing the current browsing context and individual elements.

First decide what the screenshot is meant to test. A first-visit test should usually retain the consent prompt. A screenshot meant to show the page after a visitor’s choice should make that choice deliberately and confirm the resulting state.

Choose the right fix for the test

Goal Approach
Verify first-visit consent behavior Leave the dialog visible and capture it as part of the expected state.
Show the page after consent Use the site’s visible consent control, then wait for the modal to disappear or a known page element to appear.
Reproduce a previously accepted choice Restore a consent cookie or other state only after identifying the site’s actual storage mechanism and required attributes.
Capture only one page component Wait for the target element and take an element screenshot rather than a full-context capture.

There is no universal consent button selector or cookie name. The correct control, frame context, and persistence mechanism depend on the site’s implementation.

Interact with the site’s actual consent controls

  1. Inspect the rendered consent interface and identify the real button or control that matches the intended choice, such as accepting or rejecting optional cookies. Do not assume a selector based on the dialog’s title.
  2. Check whether the control is inside an iframe or another separately rendered context. Switch to the appropriate context before locating and clicking it.
  3. After the interaction, wait for an observable result: for example, the dialog becomes invisible or a known page element becomes visible.
  4. Take the screenshot only after that wait succeeds.

Example in Python with Selenium 4. Replace the URL, selector, and expected page element with values inspected on your target site; they are intentionally not generic consent selectors.

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC

url = "https://example.com"
consent_button_selector = "REPLACE_WITH_SITE_SPECIFIC_BUTTON_SELECTOR"
page_ready_selector = "REPLACE_WITH_SITE_SPECIFIC_PAGE_SELECTOR"

options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 15)

try:
    driver.get(url)

    # If the consent interface is in an iframe, switch into that frame first.
    # Locate the frame using the site's actual markup; do not guess its selector.
    button = wait.until(
        EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.CSS_SELECTOR, consent_button_selector))
    )
    button.click()

    wait.until(
        EC.invisibility_of_element_located(
            (By.CSS_SELECTOR, consent_button_selector)
        )
    )
    wait.until(
        EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, page_ready_selector))
    )

    driver.save_screenshot("page-after-consent.png")
finally:
    driver.quit()

The example uses explicit, condition-based waits rather than a guessed sleep. In practice, wait for the modal container to become invisible, not merely the button; substitute the site’s modal selector for the button selector in the invisibility condition when appropriate. Selenium cautions that page navigation’s readyState concerns assets declared in the HTML and does not guarantee that later JavaScript-driven changes are complete. Its waiting-strategies guidance also says not to mix implicit and explicit waits, because doing so can lead to unpredictable wait times.

Persist a consent choice only when you know the site’s state

If the test needs an already-established choice across sessions, determine how the site stores that choice before changing browser state. It may use a cookie or another site-specific mechanism; the right name, value, domain, path, and other attributes cannot be inferred from the presence of a modal.

Selenium cookie commands apply to the current browsing context, and a cookie can be added only while the browser is on a domain for which that cookie is valid. Navigate to the relevant site first, then use its documented consent state or verified cookie details. Avoid copying a cookie from an unrelated site or deleting an unspecified cookie: either can leave the prompt unchanged or create a test that does not represent a real visitor choice. See Selenium’s cookie documentation.

Capture a specific element when a full-page shot is not needed

If the intended output is a particular page component rather than the whole browser context, wait for that element and use Selenium’s element screenshot method. This changes the captured area; it does not dismiss or alter the cookie modal. Make sure the target element is visible and that the test’s purpose permits excluding the rest of the page.

target = wait.until(
    EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "REPLACE_WITH_TARGET_SELECTOR"))
)
target.screenshot("target-element.png")

Selenium documents both current-context and element screenshots in its screenshot guidance.

Troubleshoot when the modal still appears

  • The click times out or finds nothing: Confirm the selector against the live DOM, wait for the control to be clickable, and check whether it is inside an iframe or separate rendering context.
  • The click runs but the modal remains: Verify that the chosen control actually submits the intended consent decision. Some interfaces require a second confirmation, and a click on a decorative label may not submit anything.
  • The modal disappears, then returns: Check whether the choice is meant to persist and whether the test reuses the same browser profile or restores a valid site-specific state. Do not assume a generic cookie key.
  • The screenshot races ahead of the page: Replace navigation-only readiness or a fixed delay with an explicit wait for the modal to become invisible or for a known page element to appear.
  • The screenshot is still obscured despite the wait: Wait on the actual overlay or modal container, not only the button. Confirm that the condition describes the state you want before capture.
  • The screenshot intentionally shows a first visit: Do not dismiss the modal; its presence is the correct result for that test scenario.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can capture a URL; consent handling and other cleanup steps can be turned off when they are not wanted. Cookie banners are accepted and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers reporting the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I dismiss the cookie dialog in every Selenium screenshot test?

No. Dismiss it only when the test is meant to represent a visitor who has made a consent choice; retain it when testing first-visit behavior.

Can I use the same consent cookie for every website?

No. Consent storage and cookie attributes are site-specific, so identify the target site’s documented or verified state before setting one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Selenium’s page-load completion mean the consent modal has finished changing?

No. JavaScript can change the page after navigation reaches its configured readiness state, so wait for the specific UI condition you need.
