Virtualizers usually render only the rows near the current scroll position. To capture the complete list, identify its real scroll container, scroll through its range, wait for each new set of rows to render, and save overlapping screenshots. If the application offers a render-all mode, you may be able to capture one tall image instead—but verify that it preserves the layout.
Why a full-page screenshot can miss rows
Playwright describes page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) as capturing the full scrollable page “as if you had a very tall screen.” That describes the page capture extent; it does not make a virtualized application render items it has not mounted. Virtualizers limit rendered rows to a moving window to manage large lists. As you scroll, they replace or reposition the rendered items.

So a full-page screenshot can include the document’s full height while still omitting most of a list’s logical rows. An inner list panel can create another mismatch: scrolling the document does not necessarily move a list that scrolls inside its own element. Playwright also notes that a screenshot of a scrollable locator captures only the content currently scrolled into view. Choose the capture method that matches the result you need

Choose based on whether every row must be present, whether the normal on-screen layout matters, how reliably you can detect rendering, and whether the deliverable must be one image.

Find the element that actually scrolls
Before writing the capture loop, inspect the page and determine whether the document or an inner panel owns the list’s scroll range. Virtualizer APIs commonly bind to a specific scroll element; for example, TanStack Virtual’s React example supplies a parent element through getScrollElement. A page-level scroll will not advance a list whose scroll is contained in a panel.
Replace the example selectors below with ones from your application. The code is a reusable pattern, not a tested example for a particular website: no target page was specified, so its container selector, row locator, readiness condition, and scrolling behavior must be tailored.

Capture the list in overlapping segments
Move the actual scroll container through its range. After each movement, wait for an observable, application-specific signal that the newly exposed rows have rendered, then capture that section. Overlap adjacent captures so you can check for missing or repeated rows at the joins. Stitching the images afterward is optional and is separate from Playwright’s screenshot call.

await browser.close();The loop uses the container’s current scroll height and visible height to advance by a viewport minus an overlap. The overlap value is an example to tune, not a universal recommendation. If the list loads more data as you approach its end, its scroll height may grow during capture; make the end condition and row readiness check reflect that behavior. If rows are recycled in place, checking only that the first row is visible is not enough to prove the desired range is ready: wait for an expected row index or text, or inspect the rendered range exposed by the application.

For a viewport screenshot, use page.screenshot() without fullPage. For the document’s scrollable extent, use page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }). For the list panel’s currently visible portion, use container.screenshot(); it does not automatically capture the panel’s offscreen logical rows. Use render-all mode only when the application supports it
Some applications provide a test or export mode that disables virtualization and renders every row. If yours does, it may allow a single tall screenshot. This is an application feature, not a general Playwright setting. Verify the resulting row order, widths, sticky headers or columns, and overall layout: rendering all rows can change how the page behaves compared with normal virtualized mode. The virtualizer’s configuration determines whether such a mode exists.
Troubleshoot missing, repeated, or incomplete rows
- The screenshot contains only a few rows: The virtualizer likely rendered only the visible window. Capture while scrolling through the list, or use an application-supported render-all mode.
- The list does not move: You may be scrolling the document rather than the list panel. Inspect which element’s
scrollTopchanges during a manual scroll and target that element. - Rows are blank or stale in a segment: The capture ran before the new range finished rendering or loading. Wait for a target-specific row, index, loading-state change, or other observable condition instead of relying on a universal fixed sleep.
- Rows are missing at segment joins: Increase the overlap and compare the row identifiers or text in adjacent captures. The right overlap depends on row size and layout.
- The loop stops too early: The list may load additional rows and increase its scroll height while you capture. Recheck the end condition after loading and base completion on the application’s actual final range when possible.
- A single tall capture changes the page layout: Rendering every row may affect sticky elements, widths, or ordering. Prefer segmented captures if the render-all output does not match the intended layout.

Can I use Playwright’s fullPage option and still capture a virtualized list?
You can capture the page’s scrollable extent with the option, but it does not guarantee the virtualizer has rendered every row.
