If a sticky header or fixed control obscures or repeats over content in a full-page image, use a capture-only CSS override, then inspect the result. There is no universal fix because the right treatment depends on the page layout and the evidence you need.
Why sticky and fixed elements can complicate a full-page screenshot
A fixed element is ordinarily positioned relative to the viewport in visual media. A sticky element behaves like a relatively positioned element until it reaches a specified threshold, then sticks within the limits of its scrolling ancestor and containing block. Sticky positioning needs a non-auto inset, such as top: 0, on the axis where it is meant to stick. See MDN’s CSS position reference.
Full-page capture extends the captured area beyond the visible viewport; it does not necessarily reproduce the experience of manually scrolling through the page. A fixed bar may overlap content, and sticky behavior may appear differently in a tall capture. A transformed, perspective, or filtered ancestor can also become the containing block for a fixed element, changing its usual relationship to the viewport.
Pick the capture that matches your goal

If the content is inside a nested scrolling container rather than the document’s main scroll, verify that the selected capture method includes the content you need. Browser and site behavior can differ, so inspect the output rather than assuming every full-page capture will look the same.

Firefox Developer Tools provides a full-page screenshot control, an Inspector command called “Screenshot Node” for a selected element, and a Web Console screenshot helper. The console helper accepts :screenshot --fullpage for a full-page image and a --selector option for a selected element. See Firefox’s screenshot documentation for the current interface details.

- Open the page in Firefox and launch Developer Tools.
- For a full-page image, use the Developer Tools screenshot control or enter
:screenshot --fullpagein the Web Console. - For one element, select it in the Inspector and use “Screenshot Node,” or use the console helper’s
--selectoroption. - Open the saved image and check whether a header, banner, or floating control covers or repeats over the content.
If the result must omit an overlay, apply a temporary style in the page before capture, using selectors specific to that site. Remove the style afterward.
Automate the capture with Playwright
Playwright’s fullPage: true option captures the full scrollable page. A locator screenshot captures a particular element instead. The distinction matters: use the first for the document and the second when the artifact should contain only one region. See Playwright’s Screenshots guide and the Page API.

Hide or reposition an overlay for this capture only
When a full-page image should not contain a fixed header or floating control, inject a site-specific style before taking the screenshot. This illustrative example changes their positioning; replace both selectors with selectors that exist on the page.

Either approach changes the page’s appearance, so use it only when the intended artifact should omit or alter those controls. A site may use nested scrolling, transformed ancestors, or JavaScript-driven behavior; inspect the output and adjust the selector or method accordingly.

Troubleshooting a screenshot that looks wrong
- Content is hidden under a header: take a viewport capture if the visible state is the goal. For a full-page artifact without the obstruction, use a site-specific capture-only CSS override and verify the result.
- A fixed control appears over multiple sections: that is consistent with fixed positioning relative to a viewport or containing block. Decide whether it belongs in the final image; hide or reposition it only if the artifact should omit it.
- A sticky header is not sticking as expected: check that it has a non-
autoinset on the intended axis and identify its scrolling ancestor and containing block. - The override has no effect on a fixed element: inspect its ancestors for transforms, perspective, or filters that may affect its containing block, and confirm the selector matches the actual element.
- A full-page image misses content in a panel: check whether the panel has its own scroll container. A document-wide full-page screenshot and a screenshot of a selected element serve different purposes; capture the relevant element or arrange the panel’s contents for the capture.
- The altered image no longer represents the page accurately: remove the injected CSS and capture again. Do not change layout when the fixed or sticky control is part of the evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright’s full-page screenshot scroll through the page?
It captures the full scrollable page as a tall image; it is not the same as taking a screenshot of only the current viewport.

Yes. In Playwright, use a locator’s screenshot method; in Firefox, use “Screenshot Node” or the console helper’s selector option.
