Enter the page’s password in your browser, wait for the protected content to appear, then capture the viewport, full page, or a specific element. You need permission to view the page; if it is private rather than password-protected, ask the site owner for an account with access.
Before you start: confirm you have access
This method is for a page you are authorized to view. WordPress password-protected content shows a form in place of the post until the correct password is entered. Its default prompt says, “This post is password protected. To view it please enter your password below:” (WordPress.org: Protect posts with password).

A WordPress private page is a different visibility setting: it is limited to qualifying site users, so a password prompt may not be enough. If the page requires an account or your password does not work, ask the owner for the appropriate access rather than trying to bypass the restriction. See WordPress.org’s visibility guide.
Screenshot the page in a browser
- Open the page and submit the password. Enter the password supplied by the page owner in the prompt and submit it.
- Wait for the protected content to render. Make sure the page has changed from the password form to the content you were granted access to. If the prompt remains, check the password or contact the owner.
- Choose the capture area. Use a viewport screenshot for what is currently visible, a full-page capture for content farther down the page, or an element capture for one selected section if your browser or capture tool supports it.
- Take and inspect the screenshot. Confirm that the saved image shows the content you need and is not just the password form. For a long page, use full-page capture rather than capturing only the current screen.

Automate the capture with Playwright
If you regularly need screenshots and have authorized access, Playwright can capture a page after you enter its password. The following Node.js example opens a browser, pauses while you enter the password, then saves a full-page PNG. Install Playwright first with npm install playwright; install a browser if prompted with npx playwright install chromium.

What WordPress password protection does—and does not—protect
WordPress stores a post password in a browser cookie, so you may not have to enter it again on later visits from that browser (WordPress.org). That convenience does not make every related file secret: WordPress.com warns that media attached to password-protected content can still be indexed by search engines. Do not treat the password prompt as a guarantee that attached images or other media are private (WordPress.com’s visibility guide).

Troubleshooting
- The password form is still visible: the password may be incorrect, or the page may not have finished loading. Try the supplied password again; if access still fails, contact the owner.
- You can view the page but cannot use the password: it may be set to private visibility rather than password-protected. Ask the owner for an account with the required permissions.
- The screenshot contains only the prompt: take the capture only after the protected content appears. In automation, pause for manual entry and verification before calling the screenshot method.
- The screenshot cuts off lower content: use the full-page option if your browser or capture utility supports it; a viewport capture records only the visible area.
- A related image or file is accessible without the prompt: protected-post visibility does not necessarily prevent associated media from being indexed or accessed. Ask the site owner how those files are protected.
