Capture a full web page at 2× with Playwright
Playwright gives you explicit control over the page’s CSS viewport and the saved image’s pixel scale. Install it in a Node.js project, then run this script:

In Playwright, fullPage: true captures the full scrollable document rather than just the visible viewport. scale: 'device' makes output pixels correspond to device pixels; with a device scale factor of 2, each CSS pixel maps to two pixels along each image dimension. Choose the CSS viewport separately from the 2× scale
The viewport width controls the page’s responsive layout; the device scale factor controls the density of the saved pixels. Set the viewport to the CSS width you want to reproduce, then set the scale factor to 2. A 1280-pixel CSS viewport produces a 2560-pixel-wide 2× image. For a full-page capture, the image height depends on the rendered document’s scrollable height, not just the 900-pixel viewport height in the example.
This distinction explains why a screenshot can look sharp on a Retina display but still have only one saved image pixel per CSS pixel. Apple’s archived web-image guidance describes 1× as standard resolution and 2× as high resolution, noting that at 2× density there are four device pixels within each CSS-pixel area: two across and two down. Capture only the visible viewport or reduce the image scale
Save only what is on screen
Remove fullPage: true from the screenshot options to capture the current viewport instead of the whole scrollable page. At 1280 × 900 CSS pixels and 2× device scale, the nominal output is 2560 × 1800 pixels.
Save one output pixel per CSS pixel
Keep the same viewport and device scale factor, but use scale: 'css' in page.screenshot(). That produces one output pixel per CSS pixel rather than a 2× image.

Use Safari to preview a page at a chosen pixel ratio
Safari’s Responsive Design Mode is useful for checking how a page adapts to different screen sizes and pixel ratios. In Safari, open the Develop menu and choose Enter Responsive Design Mode, or press Control-Command-R. Select a viewport and pixel ratio to preview the page; Apple notes that pixel ratio can affect images and styles. See Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation.
Responsive Design Mode is a preview and testing workflow. The Apple documentation cited here does not establish a direct Safari command for exporting the full web page as a 2× PNG. If you need a reproducible full-page image file with explicit pixel scaling, use the Playwright method above.
Troubleshoot common capture problems

The output is not twice as wide as expected. Check that the browser context has
deviceScaleFactor: 2and the screenshot call hasscale: 'device'. The viewport is measured in CSS pixels; a 1280-pixel viewport at 2× should yield 2560 output pixels across. -
The image shows only the top of the page. Confirm that

waitUntil: 'networkidle'. Pages that keep network requests active may never reach that condition. Choose a navigation wait condition appropriate for the site, or wait for a specific page element before capturing. -
Content is missing because it loads later. A page may render content after the initial navigation. Wait for a relevant selector or a suitable delay before calling
page.screenshot(). The required wait depends on how the target site loads its content. -
Playwright cannot launch Chromium. Install the browser build for the installed Playwright package with
npx playwright install chromium, then rerun the script.

Performance and output-size considerations
A 2× image has four times as many pixels as a 1× image with the same CSS dimensions, because both width and height double. Full-page captures can therefore become large, particularly on long documents. Use a viewport-only capture when you need only the visible area, or use scale: 'css' when a 1× output is sufficient. The final height of a full-page screenshot depends on the page’s rendered scrollable height.
