Google Apps Script cannot take a screenshot of Gmail’s rendered interface. It can find one message, verify that it is the message you want, and read its sender, subject, date, body, and ID. To preserve the actual Gmail view, you must display that message in a browser or on a device and use its screenshot command. If a visual copy of Gmail is not required, print the message to PDF or generate a document from its data instead.
What Apps Script can—and cannot—capture
The Apps Script Gmail service exposes mail data through GmailApp and GmailMessage. The documented message methods include getFrom(), getSubject(), getDate(), getBody(), getPlainBody(), and getId(). The reference does not provide a method that renders Gmail’s web interface or captures pixels from it. See Google’s GmailMessage reference.
That distinction matters. A screenshot records what was visible—Gmail’s toolbar, labels, conversation layout, inline images, collapsed quotes, profile images, and any warning or banner on screen. Message data or a PDF reconstructed from that data is a different artifact and may not look like Gmail.

Before you run the script
- Use an Apps Script project associated with the Google account that can read the mailbox.
- Have enough identifying information to distinguish the message: sender, an exact or distinctive subject, a date range, or a unique phrase.
- Plan for a thread containing several messages. A subject line identifies a conversation, not necessarily one message.
- Do not grant permissions blindly. Gmail-reading methods require authorization; the reference commonly lists the
https://mail.google.com/scope. Review the permission screen before accepting.
Find the exact message in Gmail
Start with a Gmail search query, then inspect every message in every returned thread. The following function is intentionally conservative: it checks both sender and exact subject and returns a message-level object rather than assuming the first result is correct.

Replace the example address and subject. Gmail search supports ordinary operators, so add a date range or another known detail when a subject is reused:

Gmail threads can contain replies, forwards, and messages from different senders. That is why the inner loop checks each GmailMessage.
Handle no match and multiple matches
For an automated workflow, fail safely rather than silently choosing a result. Return all candidates with identifying fields and require confirmation when the message is sensitive or the search is ambiguous.

}In production, you can present the candidate list to a user, store the confirmed ID, and retrieve it later with GmailApp.getMessageById(id). IDs are message-level identifiers, so this avoids repeatedly relying on a broad subject search.

Open the message and capture a real screenshot
- Run your selection function and record the returned message’s ID, sender, subject, and date.
- Open Gmail in the account that owns the message.
- Use Gmail search or the confirmed message details to open that specific message. If it is in a conversation, expand the individual message you identified rather than capturing the entire thread by accident.
- Set the browser zoom, window size, and scroll position deliberately. Decide whether the screenshot should include the Gmail header, labels, attachments, or the full message body.
- Use the screenshot feature provided by your operating system, browser, or mobile device. The exact keyboard shortcut and selection interface depend on that device and browser.
- Check the saved image for clipped content, collapsed sections, hidden inline images, or unrelated messages before sharing it.
Apps Script can identify the target and automate surrounding records, but it does not press the browser’s screenshot button or obtain the browser’s rendered pixels.
Use PDF when a picture of Gmail is not necessary
For a human-operated copy, open the selected message in Gmail and use Gmail’s print-to-PDF workflow. This produces a portable file, but print layout is not identical to a screenshot: page breaks, margins, headers, and hidden conversation details can differ.
You can also read the message body in Apps Script and create a document or PDF programmatically. Google documents PDF-related Apps Script workflows, including attaching a PDF made from a Drive file in the GmailApp reference and generating PDFs in its Sheets PDF sample. Those examples show PDF handling, not a Gmail-interface screenshot API.

}If you turn this object into HTML or a PDF, label it as a generated copy. Sanitise or escape message content before inserting it into a document, especially when the email is untrusted. A generated file should not be described as a screenshot of Gmail.

The script returns no messages
Broaden or correct the Gmail query, confirm the account, and test each condition separately. A sender display name may not contain the exact address you expected, and date operators use Gmail’s mailbox time interpretation. Log candidate metadata rather than logging full sensitive bodies.
The wrong message is selected
A shared subject or a multi-message thread is the usual cause. Iterate through thread.getMessages(), compare sender, exact subject, date, and a distinctive body phrase, and stop for confirmation when more than one candidate remains.
Authorization is denied or repeatedly requested
Run the function from the account that owns the mailbox, inspect the requested scopes, and authorize only after checking that the script is trusted. Organization administrators can restrict Gmail access for Workspace users; in that case, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy.

The screenshot is blank, clipped, or shows the wrong conversation message
Wait for Gmail to finish loading, expand the intended message, scroll to the required position, and capture again. Check the image at full size. Browser zoom and responsive layout can change what is visible without changing the underlying email.
A generated PDF does not match the Gmail screen
That is expected. A PDF made from message fields or Gmail’s print view follows document or print rendering, while a screenshot records the browser’s current pixels. Use the screenshot path when visual fidelity to Gmail is the requirement.
