The wkhtmltopdf project’s official download matrix lists ARM64/aarch64 packages for several Debian- and RPM-family systems, plus Raspberry Pi builds for some Debian releases. Start there; if your system is not covered, consider building from source or choosing another Qt-based renderer. A package described as “static” still depends on system libraries and fonts.
Check whether your ARM system is supported
wkhtmltoimage is distributed as part of the wkhtmltox project, whose stable series is 0.12.6 (wkhtmltopdf project, 2020). The official download matrix includes ARM64/aarch64 packages for Debian, Ubuntu, AlmaLinux, CentOS, Amazon Linux 2 and openSUSE, as well as Raspberry Pi builds for several Debian releases. Availability depends on the exact OS release, so check the matrix rather than assuming that any ARM64 package will work: official wkhtmltopdf downloads.
On Debian or Ubuntu, the architecture is commonly reported as arm64; RPM-family package names commonly use aarch64. These labels both refer to 64-bit ARM in this packaging context. They do not mean a package built for one distribution is automatically suitable for another.
Identify your architecture and release
Run these commands before downloading a package:
uname -m
cat /etc/os-release
glibc_version=$(ldd --version 2>&1 | head -n 1)
printf '%sn' "$glibc_version"
uname -m commonly prints aarch64 on ARM64 Linux. Package tools may instead describe the architecture as arm64. Check the distribution name and version in /etc/os-release against the download entry, too. If you are on 32-bit ARM, do not treat an ARM64 build as compatible.

Install a matching prebuilt package
- Open the official download matrix and find the entry for your distribution, release and architecture.
- Download the package for that entry. Do not substitute a Debian package for an RPM-family system, or choose an arbitrary ARM package simply because it has the right CPU architecture.
- Install it with your distribution’s package manager. For a downloaded Debian package, for example:
sudo apt install ./wkhtmltox_VERSION.arm64.debReplace the filename with the exact package you downloaded. The command lets
aptresolve package dependencies where available. - For an RPM package, use the package manager for your system, for example:
sudo dnf install ./wkhtmltox-VERSION.aarch64.rpmUse the package’s actual filename and your distribution’s supported package manager.
- Check that the executable is available and reports its version:
wkhtmltoimage --version
If the package manager cannot install a package, the project FAQ says the package can be extracted instead. Extraction does not remove the need to install runtime dependencies; an extracted binary may still fail if required libraries are absent. Consult the official downloads and FAQ for package-specific guidance.

Understand the ARM package’s system dependencies
The ARM packages statically link Qt, but “static” does not mean self-contained. The project notes that distribution differences in library versions, OpenSSL and libc can still matter. Rendering also relies on the runtime font stack: Fontconfig, FreeType and fonts installed on the host affect text selection and layout. A binary that launches successfully may therefore still produce different or incomplete text rendering.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Use the distribution-specific build. It is the best starting point for matching the system libraries the package expects.
- Check missing shared libraries. If the command fails at launch, inspect it with
lddand install the missing dependencies from your distribution’s repositories. Do not download arbitrary library files from untrusted sources. - Install fonts deliberately. Make sure the fonts your pages require are installed in the runtime environment; check Fontconfig and FreeType packages if rendering reports font-related errors.
- Test output, not just startup. Compare the rendered text, glyphs, images and dimensions with the production environment.
The package metadata describes the program as converting HTML to PDF and image formats using QtWebKit, and maps arm64 and aarch64 to linux/arm64/v8: wkhtmltopdf packaging configuration.
Verify the renderer with a local fixture
A version check confirms that the executable starts; it does not establish that fonts, CSS or image loading match production. Create a simple local HTML fixture that includes representative text, a non-ASCII character, an image and the CSS your workload depends on. Then capture it:

wkhtmltoimage /tmp/wkhtmltoimage-arm-test.html /tmp/wkhtmltoimage-arm-test.png
Put a known local image at /tmp/test-image.png before running the command, or remove the image line if you are only checking text and CSS. Inspect the resulting PNG on the same kind of system used in deployment. Record the OS release, architecture, glibc version, installed fonts and wkhtmltoimage --version alongside the test result so a later deployment can be compared meaningfully.
What to do when there is no matching package
Build from source
A source build can give you more control when the official package matrix does not cover your distribution or when its system-library requirements do not fit your environment. It also creates more work: you must build and maintain the renderer and its Qt/WebKit dependencies, and verify output on the target machine. The project’s source and packaging information does not establish a single universal build recipe for every ARM distribution, so use the project’s source and packaging information for the precise version and target you intend to maintain.
Consider a Qt-based replacement
If you can change renderers, Qt’s Linux documentation lists arm64 support for Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 11/12. Its Linux-on-Arm desktop reference is a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM running Ubuntu 24.04; that is a test baseline, not a guarantee for every ARM system. Qt documents minimum glibc versions of 2.28 for Qt 6.8 and later, and 2.34 for Qt 6.10 and later (The Qt Company, 2026). Building Qt from source avoids the installer’s glibc restriction, but does not eliminate the need to validate dependencies and rendered output. See Qt for Linux and Qt Linux requirements.

Troubleshoot common ARM failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Package manager reports the wrong architecture or refuses the package | The package does not match the host architecture or distribution family. | Check uname -m, the package architecture and /etc/os-release. Return to the official matrix and select the matching entry. |
wkhtmltoimage: command not found |
The package did not install, or its executable is not on the shell’s path. | Check the package manager’s installation result and locate the installed executable using your distribution’s package tools. If extracted manually, invoke its actual path or configure the path deliberately. |
| Launch fails with a missing shared-library error | A runtime dependency such as a distribution library is missing or incompatible. | Use ldd on the executable to inspect shared-library resolution, then install the appropriate library packages for the host distribution. A Qt-static package can still require system libraries. |
| Text is missing, substituted or laid out differently | Fonts, Fontconfig or FreeType differ from the expected runtime environment. | Install the needed fonts and font-stack packages, then re-run the local fixture. Compare on the same OS image intended for deployment. |
| The program starts, but page output differs from another machine | System libraries, fonts, architecture, OS release or page resources may differ. | Record and compare the OS, architecture, glibc, font inventory and renderer version. Validate the same representative fixture on both systems. |
| An extracted package still will not run | Extraction bypassed package installation but did not supply dependencies. | Install missing runtime dependencies with the native package manager or use a matching package. Extraction is not a dependency workaround. |
Plan for security and repeatable deployments
The project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” The warning names wkhtmltopdf, but the companion image renderer uses the same QtWebKit rendering process and attack surface. Do not pass untrusted HTML or JavaScript to it without sanitization and appropriate isolation. Keep test fixtures representative, pin the target OS and package version in deployment notes, and re-run rendering checks when any of those inputs changes. See the project’s downloads page warning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does wkhtmltoimage have an ARM64 or aarch64 build?
Yes. The official project download matrix lists ARM64/aarch64 packages for several Linux distributions and Raspberry Pi builds for some Debian releases. Match the package to the exact OS release and architecture.
Is a static ARM build independent of system libraries and fonts?
No. Qt is statically linked in the ARM packages, but system libraries and the installed font stack can still affect whether it runs and how it renders.
Is the Raspberry Pi 5 a guaranteed supported target for wkhtmltoimage?
No. Qt names a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB with Ubuntu 24.04 as a Linux-on-Arm desktop reference platform; that is not a guarantee for every ARM board or for wkhtmltoimage specifically.
