For what is visible on your Mac, press Shift-Command-3 to capture the entire screen or Shift-Command-4 to select an area. Press Shift-Command-5 when you need a timer, a different save location or additional controls. These shortcuts capture the screen currently shown; they do not automatically scroll through an entire webpage. For content below the fold, use Safari’s Web Archive, Chrome’s command-line capture, a PDF, or a screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo.
Choose the output before you capture
“Screenshot a page” can mean several different results. Pick the one that matches your purpose:

A PDF preserves a document layout and a Web Archive preserves page resources; neither should be described as a single, vertically scrolling screenshot image.
Take a screenshot of the visible page on Mac
Capture the entire screen
- Open the webpage and arrange it exactly as you want it shown.
- Press and release Shift-Command-3.
- Find the resulting file on the desktop unless you previously changed the destination.
This captures everything visible on the display, including browser chrome, other windows and the menu bar. Close private tabs, notifications and unrelated windows first if the image will be shared.

Capture only part of the page
- Press and release Shift-Command-4. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
- Drag around the portion of the webpage you want.
- Release to capture. Press Esc before releasing if you want to cancel.
Use this for a paragraph, product card, chart or browser content without surrounding desktop clutter.
Capture a browser window or menu
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Press Space. The pointer changes to a camera.
- Move over the browser window or menu and click.
Hold Option while clicking a window to omit its shadow. This is useful when you need a clean window boundary rather than an arbitrary crop.
Use Screenshot for timers and save controls
Press Shift-Command-5 to open macOS Screenshot. The panel lets you choose whole-screen, window or selected-area capture, set a timer, select a save location and control whether the pointer appears. A timer gives you time to open a menu, expand a disclosure or move the pointer out of the way.
macOS normally saves screenshots to the desktop. In the Screenshot panel, choose Options and select another destination. You can also Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard when you want to paste the image directly into a document or message instead of creating a permanent desktop file.

On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot can offer HDR capture as HEIF. For the SDR “Most Compatible” option, macOS uses PNG. If a recipient or application expects a conventional image, choose the compatible format.
Capture an entire webpage rather than the visible viewport
The standard Mac shortcuts capture screen pixels only. They do not scroll a long page and stitch the sections into one image. Decide whether you need an archive, a document or an automated image.
Safari: save a Web Archive
- Open the page in Safari.
- Choose File > Save As.
- Set the format to Web Archive and save.
A Web Archive stores page graphics and preserves links while their destination pages remain available. It is useful for offline reference, but it is an archive file that must be opened in a compatible application, not a PNG or JPEG screenshot. Some webpages can prevent items displayed on the page from being saved.
Safari: save only the source
- Choose File > Save As in Safari.
- Select Page Source.
- Save the HTML file.
Page Source is the document’s HTML, not the rendered result. It will not reproduce the visual appearance of the page as an image.

Chrome Headless: create an image or PDF
Google’s documented Headless Chrome options are intended for command-line users. The --screenshot option writes an image, while --print-to-pdf writes a PDF. The --timeout option gives dynamic content time to load before capture. The exact Chrome executable path varies by installation; replace google-chrome below with the command available on your Mac.

They are useful in scripts, CI jobs and repeatable documentation workflows. A PDF may span multiple pages and is not the same as one tall screenshot.
Which method should you use?
- Visible content for a message or bug report: use Shift-Command-4 for a focused crop.
- A complete desktop or browser context: use Shift-Command-3.
- A clean window or menu: use Shift-Command-4, then Space.
- A delayed capture or a custom folder: use Shift-Command-5.
- Offline reading with links and graphics: save a Safari Web Archive.
- HTML inspection: save Page Source.
- Automated image or PDF generation: use Chrome Headless or an API.
No source establishes one browser as universally best. The deciding factors are output type, whether below-the-fold content is required and whether you are comfortable with command-line tools.

Troubleshooting
The shortcut does nothing
Make sure you press the three keys together and release them. If another utility has claimed the shortcut, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots and check or change the assignments. You can still open Screenshot with Shift-Command-5 if that shortcut remains available.
The wrong window or area was captured
Close or move overlapping windows, then repeat the selection. For a precise window capture, use Shift-Command-4 followed by Space instead of dragging around the window manually.

The file is not on the desktop
Open Shift-Command-5, choose Options and check the selected save location. If you chose Save to Clipboard, paste with Command-V into the target application.
The full page is cut off
That is expected from Shift-Command-3 and Shift-Command-4: they capture the visible screen or selected pixels. Use Safari Web Archive for an archive, Chrome Headless for scripted image or PDF output, or ScreenshotNeo for an automated full-page capture.
Dynamic content is missing
Wait for the page to finish loading before using a shortcut. For Chrome Headless, increase --timeout. An API workflow can wait for a selector, a fixed delay or network idle and can load lazy images before capture.
Practical privacy and quality checklist
- Remove passwords, private messages, account numbers and personal notifications from view.
- Use a crop or window capture instead of exposing the whole desktop.
- Check the page at the intended viewport size and zoom level.
- Wait for fonts, images and interactive content to finish rendering.
- Use PNG for sharp interface text; use PDF when selectable document text matters.
- Confirm the output file and destination before sending it to someone else.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Shift-Command-3 capture a whole scrolling webpage?
No. It captures the entire visible Mac screen. It does not scroll below the viewport; use an archive, PDF, command-line capture or screenshot API for that.
What is the difference between Safari Web Archive and Page Source?
Web Archive saves page resources such as graphics and preserves links where destinations remain available. Page Source saves HTML only. Neither is a single rendered screenshot image.
Can I capture a webpage without storing an image on the desktop?
