Disable animations in a page screenshot
Use page.screenshot() for a viewport screenshot or a full-page capture. The option works with either scope:

Disable animations for one element
Use the locator screenshot API when you only need an element. Pass animations: 'disabled' explicitly: locator screenshots allow animations by default.

What the option does—and what it does not
Playwright stops CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations for the capture. It handles finite and infinite animations differently:

- Finite animations: Playwright fast-forwards them to completion. This can fire the
transitionendevent. - Infinite animations: Playwright cancels them to their initial state for the screenshot, then lets them play again afterward.
This is not a general pause for all page activity. Timers, changing data, video, canvas content, and other sources of visual change may still affect the image. Stabilize those separately—for example, by preparing the page state or applying a screenshot stylesheet that hides or normalizes volatile elements.

Use Playwright Test for screenshot assertions
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() is a Playwright Test visual assertion, not a general screenshot method available in every Playwright script. It waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the result with the expected baseline. Consult the visual comparisons guide and the PageAssertions API for assertion-specific options.

For visual comparisons, keep the capture environment consistent with the one used to create the baseline. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. If the remaining differences come from volatile page regions, use a screenshot stylesheet such as stylePath where supported by your assertion setup.

Version availability
Playwright release notes identify version 1.20 as adding the animations: 'disabled' screenshot option for page, locator, and element-handle methods. The current API documentation checked on October 3, 2026 continues to document the option. See the Playwright release notes and ElementHandle API.

Troubleshooting inconsistent captures
- An element still moves in the screenshot: Confirm the option is passed to the screenshot call you actually use. For an element capture, use
locator.screenshot({ animations: 'disabled' }); do not assume page-level settings automatically apply to a separate call. - A timer, video, canvas, or live value changes: The animation option does not freeze these sources. Set a deterministic page state or use a screenshot stylesheet to hide or normalize the changing region.
- The screenshot differs from the baseline across machines: Match the browser version, host environment, settings, and headless mode used for the baseline. Rendering variation can persist even when animations are disabled.
- You expected a test assertion in a standalone script:
