How to Screenshot a Page That Loads Content with IntersectionObserver

Trigger IntersectionObserver content by scrolling the correct root, wait for a page-specific readiness signal, then capture with Playwright.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scroll each relevant page area until the watched content intersects its observer root, wait for a page-specific signal that the content is ready, and only then take the screenshot. In Playwright, a full-page screenshot captures the document’s scrollable extent, but it does not guarantee that the page’s IntersectionObserver callbacks have loaded every deferred item.

Why a screenshot can miss IntersectionObserver content

IntersectionObserver lets a page run a callback when a target enters or exits an intersection with a configured root, or crosses a configured threshold. Sites commonly use it to lazy-load images and other content as people scroll, or to fetch more entries in an infinite feed. See MDN’s Intersection Observer API documentation.

When a target is registered with observe(), the callback receives an initial entry on a later render cycle, including whether the target is already intersecting. Further callbacks depend on the target’s relationship to its root and the observer’s thresholds. See MDN’s observe() reference.

A browser’s load event is not proof that all lazy content is ready. Lazy resources may still be pending when that event fires. A full-page screenshot and content loading are separate tasks: first trigger and verify the page’s loading behavior, then capture.

Choose what to scroll and what to capture

Find the observer root

The default observer root is the viewport, but a site can configure an ancestor element as the root. If scrolling the document does not activate the content, identify whether the targets are observed inside a nested scroll container and scroll that container instead.

Decide whether you need the whole page or one element

  • Use a full-page screenshot for the document’s scrollable extent.
  • Use a locator screenshot for one element. Playwright scrolls the target into view for locator operations, but that does not necessarily load unrelated content elsewhere on the page.
  • A screenshot of a scrollable container shows its current visible contents; it is not automatically a capture of every item that container might load as it scrolls.

Playwright: scroll, verify, then capture

Replace the example selectors and completion condition with signals from the site you are capturing. The loop below is a fallback for pages without a known terminal marker; it scrolls the document in viewport-sized increments and stops after the document height is unchanged across three checks.

  1. Navigate to the page and wait for a known initial element or state.
  2. Scroll the actual root through the content that must appear in the capture.
  3. After each scroll, wait for a meaningful signal: a known item, a target count, a loader disappearing, or a terminal marker. Prefer this to a fixed delay.
  4. Take the full-page screenshot only after the intended content is present and any required images have loaded.
const step = await page.evaluate(() => window.innerHeight);
let previousHeight = 0;
let stablePasses = 0;

while (stablePasses < 3) {
  await page.evaluate((y) => window.scrollBy(0, y), step);
  await page.waitForTimeout(250); // settling fallback, not proof of readiness

  const height = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
  if (height === previousHeight) stablePasses++;
  else stablePasses = 0;
  previousHeight = height;
}

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });

For a nested scroller, replace the window scroll with scrolling the container. For example, if #results is the actual scroll root:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
await page.locator('#results').evaluate(async (element) => {
  element.scrollTop = element.scrollHeight;
});

That moves the container to its current end once; if loading adds more content, repeat the movement and wait for the page’s own loaded-state signal. Playwright supports locator waits and page.waitForFunction() for checking a condition. For example, when a stable item count is the right signal:

Use an expected count or known terminal marker where possible; the selector and count above are examples, not universal page states. See Playwright’s Page API documentation for screenshot options, page waits, and locator behavior.

Make the readiness check match the content

Images and embedded resources

A visible image element does not necessarily mean its image has finished loading. If image completeness matters, wait for the particular image resource state rather than treating element presence as sufficient. MDN describes checking an image’s complete property and explains why the load event does not establish that all lazy resources are ready: MDN’s lazy-loading guide.

Infinite feeds

An infinite feed may never reach a final page height. Decide what the screenshot should include—such as a known number of entries or a specific terminal item—and stop once that condition is met. A “height stopped growing” heuristic cannot define completion for a feed designed to keep fetching more items.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Document-height stability

The sample loop is only a heuristic. It can stop before delayed content appears, miss items inserted without changing total height, or behave poorly with feeds that keep extending. Prefer a page-specific condition whenever the site exposes one. A delay can allow a transition to settle, but elapsed time alone cannot prove the desired content is ready.

Troubleshooting missing content

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Full-page image has blank or missing sections The screenshot covered the document extent, but the page’s observer-driven content was not triggered or finished loading. Scroll through the relevant targets before capture and wait for a page-specific loaded-state signal.
Scrolling the page has no effect The observer may use a nested scrolling ancestor as its root. Find the actual scroll container and move that element rather than the window.
Some images are absent although their elements exist The resource itself may still be loading. Wait for the image’s own completion state when image readiness matters.
The script stops while a feed is still incomplete Height stability is not a reliable completion signal for delayed inserts or infinite scrolling. Use a known item count, terminal marker, or other page-specific condition.
A fixed wait works sometimes but fails under slower loads Elapsed time does not verify that the application reached the expected state. Replace the sleep with a locator wait or page.waitForFunction() condition where possible.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo takes screenshots through a single GET request; for an IntersectionObserver page, use a page-specific scroll-and-readiness workflow when you need to guarantee that its watched content has appeared before capture. ScreenshotNeo’s clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers say which outcome occurred. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently asked questions

Does taking a full-page screenshot trigger every IntersectionObserver?

No. Full-page capture describes the captured document extent; it does not establish that page-specific observer callbacks ran or that deferred content finished loading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is waiting for the browser load event enough?

No. Lazy-loaded resources may still be pending after that event. Wait for the specific content or resource state needed for the capture.
