Set up a sequential URL screenshot script
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser, create a script, and make an output directory before running it. For example:

Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
Capture only the visible viewport
Remove fullPage: true to capture the visible viewport. This is the default behavior, suitable when you want the same above-the-fold view for every URL.
Capture the full scrollable page
Keep fullPage: true to capture the page’s full scrollable content, rather than only what is visible in the viewport. This can produce very tall images. See the Playwright Screenshots documentation.
Capture one element
Use a locator’s screenshot() method when the output should be a particular element rather than the whole page. Prefer a user-facing locator, such as a role and accessible name, where one is available:

Make filenames useful and outputs predictable
Sequential names such as page-1.png guarantee distinct files within a run, but they do not reveal which URL produced each image. For a larger batch, derive readable names from each URL’s hostname or path, sanitize characters that are unsuitable for filenames, and retain a unique suffix so two URLs cannot overwrite one another. Create the output directory before the script runs.
If the script is part of a visual comparison workflow, keep the capture conditions consistent. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power state, and headless mode. Run captures in the same environment and configuration when comparing them over time; see Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.

Useful screenshot options
- Save to disk or keep in memory: pass
pathto save the screenshot; omit it to receive image bytes in a buffer for further processing. - Image format and quality: the screenshot API supports format options and quality where supported. Check the Page API for the format-specific details before relying on a setting.
- Clip a region: use the API’s clipping options when you need a rectangular portion of the page rather than a whole-page or locator capture.
- Scale: screenshot scale options control output sizing; consult the Page API for accepted values and behavior.
- Separate pages: a single page reused sequentially is the simplest batch pattern. If URLs require independent page state or separate tabs, a browser context can host multiple pages, as described in the Pages guide.

Troubleshoot common problems
The script cannot save a screenshot
Check that the output directory exists and that the process has permission to write there. The example uses a relative directory, so the location is relative to the working directory from which you run Node.
A URL fails to load
Confirm the URL is valid and reachable from the machine running the browser. A navigation failure can stop the loop before later URLs are captured; for a production batch, handle failures per URL and log the URL and error so one bad page does not hide which outputs are missing.

The image is blank or incomplete
Some pages render content after the initial navigation. If a particular target needs more time or a specific element to appear, wait for an appropriate locator or condition before taking the screenshot. Do not add a fixed delay indiscriminately: it can make every URL slower without ensuring that the required content is ready.

Check that the locator matches an element on that page and that the element is available when the screenshot is taken. Pages in a mixed URL list may use different markup, so an element locator that works on one site may not apply to another.
Images differ between runs
Keep the operating system, browser version, capture settings, hardware conditions, and headless mode consistent where possible. These factors can change screenshot output, as Playwright explains in its visual comparison guidance.

Can I capture screenshots in parallel?
Yes. A browser context can contain multiple pages, so separate pages can be used when independent page state is needed. The simplest example here reuses one page sequentially.
Can Playwright return screenshot bytes instead of writing a file?
Yes. Omit the screenshot path and handle the returned buffer in your script.
