Burn them into the video when they must always be visible; use YouTube’s supported live-caption workflow when viewers need a separate caption track. For subtitles rendered into the video, use correctly encoded text, verify the target script in a short sample, and check the result in YouTube’s preview before relying on the loop.
Choose how subtitles reach viewers
There are two distinct workflows, and they solve different needs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Burned-in subtitles: The text is rendered into the video image. It is always visible and does not depend on viewers enabling captions, but it cannot be turned off or selected as a separate language track.
- Separate live captions: Captions are sent to YouTube through a supported live-caption method. Viewers can use them separately from the video image, but the encoder or caption software must support YouTube’s caption-ingestion workflow.
YouTube currently supports one live caption track. Although the 608/708 standard can carry up to four language tracks, that standard capacity does not mean YouTube will provide four separate live tracks. If you need subtitles always visible, or need more than one language visible at once, burned-in text may better fit that requirement. See YouTube’s live-caption guidance.
Prepare the subtitle text and rendering environment
Check SRT encoding
If you are using an SRT subtitle file, save it as plain UTF-8, which is the encoding specified in YouTube’s subtitle-file guidance. A file exported by older subtitle software may use a legacy encoding. Identify its actual encoding and convert it to UTF-8 before rendering; changing the file extension or labeling it UTF-8 without converting the text will not repair incorrectly interpreted characters.

Choose a font that covers the target script
Use a font available in the rendering environment that includes the characters needed for the language. Coverage can vary with the script, font, operating system, and rendering libraries, so there is no single font that can be assumed to work for every regional language. FFmpeg’s subtitles filter documents font-family selection and an option for specifying input character encoding; consult the documentation for the FFmpeg build and subtitle renderer you actually use: FFmpeg subtitles filter documentation.
Render and inspect a representative sample
Before processing the full video, render a short sample that includes the script’s full character repertoire used in the video, including relevant diacritics or combining marks, punctuation, and line breaks. Inspect the encoded result at a realistic playback size. Look for missing glyph boxes, question marks, misplaced marks, unexpected spacing, and line wrapping that obscures the image. Correct the text encoding, font selection, or layout and render again until the sample is legible.

Configure the YouTube live stream
For a standard encoder ingest, YouTube’s current general guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Choose resolution and bitrate for your encoder and available connection; do not assume one bitrate fits every resolution or stream. Its general guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and stream-health messages for the configuration you select.
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy the stream key into your encoder’s stream settings. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Set the encoder’s video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Use a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommends, and do not exceed four seconds under its general guidance.
- Select RTMPS where your encoder and workflow support it. If you use separate live captions, configure the supported caption-ingestion method as well; a subtitle file rendered into the picture is not the same as a live caption track.
- Start a test stream and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before making the loop public. Confirm both that the video is stable and that the intended caption path is working.
If you use HLS ingest
HLS has transport requirements separate from subtitle character encoding. YouTube specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte ranges. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Meeting these constraints will not fix a wrongly encoded subtitle file or missing font glyphs; diagnose those at the text and rendering stages. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.

Test the full video and loop transition
- Play the rendered video from beginning to end and check captions at normal playback size, not only in an editing timeline.
- Inspect the last subtitle before the end and the first subtitle after the loop restarts. Confirm that timing, text, and layout remain correct across the transition.
- Check the YouTube preview for actual glyph rendering and legibility. A subtitle that looks right in a local player can still be affected by the final encoded output or viewing size.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and after going live. YouTube recommends testing before a live broadcast and monitoring stream health.
Troubleshoot common subtitle problems
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Question marks or garbled characters | Subtitle file encoding or how the renderer interprets it | Check the file’s actual encoding, convert it to plain UTF-8 if needed, and configure the subtitle filter’s input character encoding appropriately. Render and inspect another sample. |
| Empty boxes or missing characters | Font coverage or rendering environment | Choose a font with the needed script coverage in the actual environment, then render a sample containing the affected characters. Do not assume the same font will be available or behave identically on another system. |
| Text appears in a local render but not as YouTube captions | Burned-in subtitles versus separate live captions | Burned-in text is part of the video image. Separate captions must be sent through a supported YouTube live-caption path; verify that path and check YouTube’s preview. |
| Only one language track is available | YouTube live-caption track limitation | YouTube currently supports one live caption track. If multiple languages must be visible simultaneously, consider rendering them into the video, with careful testing for screen space and readability. |
| Captions drift or look wrong after the restart | Subtitle timing or the loop boundary | Check the final and initial subtitle cues in the rendered video and preview the stream across a complete loop transition. Adjust the source timing or layout, then test again. |
| Stream-health warnings or unstable ingest | Encoder settings or ingest transport | Compare codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and transport with YouTube’s current encoder or HLS requirements. Use YouTube’s health messages to identify the issue rather than changing subtitle encoding at random. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded YouTube loop, StreamNeo lets you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. Your video streams as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not camera-based broadcasts.
