To capture a Google search results page at a fixed size, set both the viewport width and height, then take a viewport screenshot—not a full-page screenshot. For a one-off image, Chrome DevTools is the quickest route. For repeatable captures, set the viewport before navigation in Playwright and save a screenshot with fullPage: false.
What “fixed viewport size” means
The viewport is the page area visible inside the browser, not the outer browser window. A fixed viewport therefore means specifying both its width and height in CSS pixels. A screenshot of the visible viewport has those CSS-pixel dimensions when captured at CSS scale; a full-page screenshot extends below the fold and is a different deliverable.

Record whether you used CSS-pixel or device-pixel output. Device-pixel scale can produce larger image dimensions on high-DPI setups. Setting a viewport makes the capture setup repeatable, but it does not establish that Google will return the same SERP on later visits. Keep the query and capture date with the image if comparisons matter.

- Open Chrome DevTools, or open the Google results page you want to capture and then open DevTools.
- Turn on the Device Toolbar using the device/viewport toggle in DevTools.
- In the device selector, choose Responsive. Enter the required width and height in the viewport fields. Chrome documentation illustrates the fields with 480 by 415 pixels; that is an interface example, not a recommended SERP size. Chrome DevTools Device Mode documentation
- Navigate to the intended Google query if you have not already done so. Check that the visible page state is the one you need, including whether any consent prompt is shown. Avoid resizing the browser after setting the dimensions if you need to preserve the setup.
- Open the Device Toolbar’s More options menu and select Capture screenshot. This captures the visible viewport. Do not choose Capture a full size screenshot unless you want content below the fold as well.
- Record the viewport width and height, browser version, device pixel ratio or output scaling, query, and capture date alongside the image.
Automate the capture with Playwright
Set the viewport when creating the page or browser context, or call page.setViewportSize() before navigating to Google. Then use page.screenshot() with fullPage: false. Playwright cautions that many sites do not expect a phone-sized page to change dimensions after loading, so setting the size before navigation avoids relying on a post-load resize. The example below uses Chromium, a CSS-pixel screenshot, and a query URL; replace the dimensions and query with your intended values.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const width = 1280;
const height = 800;
const query = 'site:example.com screenshot';
const url = `https://www.google.com/search?q=${encodeURIComponent(query)}`;
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width, height } });
try {
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'google-serp.png',
fullPage: false,
scale: 'css'
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Install the Playwright package and its browser before running this script. For a one-off viewport adjustment, await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 }) also works, but call it before navigation. Playwright documents page screenshots, viewport sizing, and the separate full-page option in its Page API; its screenshot documentation describes viewport, element, and full-scrollable-page modes.
Choose the screenshot scale
scale: 'css'maps one screenshot pixel to one CSS pixel, so output dimensions correspond to the configured viewport dimensions.scale: 'device'uses device pixels. On high-DPI setups, the resulting image can have more pixels than the CSS viewport dimensions.
Choose viewport capture or full-page capture
| What you need | Chrome DevTools | Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Visible SERP at set width and height | Capture screenshot | fullPage: false |
| Content extending below the fold | Capture a full size screenshot | fullPage: true |
Use the first row when the requirement is a fixed-size visible SERP. A full-page image has different dimensions and should not be substituted for a viewport capture.

Common problems and fixes
The image dimensions do not match the viewport
Check that you set both width and height, and verify whether the capture uses CSS pixels or device pixels. In Playwright, use scale: 'css' for one output pixel per CSS pixel. In Chrome, note device pixel ratio or output scaling with the capture so the dimensions can be interpreted.

The screenshot includes the whole results page
You likely captured the full page. In DevTools, use Capture screenshot, not Capture a full size screenshot. In Playwright, set fullPage: false.

The page layout changes after resizing
Set the viewport before navigation rather than changing dimensions after the SERP has loaded. This avoids relying on how a page responds to a post-load resize.
Repeat captures show different Google results or page states
A fixed viewport controls the capture dimensions; it does not ensure identical search results or page state. Save the query, date, browser version, and relevant capture conditions with each image. The browser documentation cited here describes capture behavior, not Google’s SERP consistency across visits, accounts, regions, or languages.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. Its API accepts a URL in a GET request and returns an image or PDF. The code below captures a Google query URL; the supplied call uses the service’s basic request format. For the API documentation, see ScreenshotNeo docs. The API features include viewport selection, but the exact parameter names and values for a particular setup should be checked in the docs rather than guessed.
