To capture repeatable SEO audit screenshots with Puppeteer, set the same viewport or device emulation before navigation, wait for the page state your audit needs, and save the relevant viewport, full page, or element with page.screenshot() or elementHandle.screenshot(). Treat the image as visual evidence—not as a substitute for inspecting SEO metadata in the DOM or page response.
Set up Puppeteer and choose consistent capture conditions
Use the same URL conditions for every comparison: viewport dimensions, device or user-agent emulation, capture scope, and readiness condition. If you are comparing pages or before-and-after changes, hold those conditions constant so the screenshots are meaningfully comparable.

The example below uses the Puppeteer package and its documented APIs. Save it as audit-shot.js, install Puppeteer in your project with npm install puppeteer, then run it with node audit-shot.js https://example.com. Replace the URL with the page you are auditing.

Capture a full desktop page
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
async function main() {
const url = process.argv[2];
if (!url) throw new Error('Usage: node audit-shot.js https://example.com');
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1365, height: 900 });
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'audit-desktop-full.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
}
main().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' followed by capture; it is a starting point, not proof that every client-rendered element or asynchronous widget has finished. See the Puppeteer Screenshots guide and the Page API.

Choose the right screenshot scope and format
page.screenshot() captures the visible viewport by default. Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page, or use clip to capture a defined region. For a single DOM element, ElementHandle.screenshot() is available and by default attempts to scroll a hidden element into view before capturing it. The ScreenshotOptions interface documents these controls.
- Initial viewport: Use the default screenshot when the audit concerns what a user first sees at a fixed viewport.
- Full page: Use
fullPage: truefor a page-length visual record. Lazy-loaded content may need a site-specific scroll or readiness step first. - Region: Use
clipwhen the evidence should focus on a specific rectangle. - Element: Use the element handle’s screenshot method for a particular component or rendered block.
PNG is the documented default. Screenshot options also expose an output type and JPEG quality setting; quality applies to JPEG, not PNG. Keep the extension and chosen output type aligned in your filenames.
Capture a mobile or responsive state
Apply device emulation or viewport settings before calling goto(). Puppeteer’s emulate(device) combines viewport and user-agent settings; the Page API also documents viewport configuration. Changing the viewport can trigger a reload in some cases, so establish the intended conditions before navigation. See the Page API.

Device preset names are tied to the Puppeteer version installed in your project. If the named preset is unavailable in that version, inspect the available device descriptors or configure the viewport and user-agent explicitly. Label the resulting file with the actual device or viewport conditions used.
Wait for the state your audit needs
A generic network-idle condition may be inappropriate for pages that keep connections open, load widgets later, or render content only after interaction. When the audit depends on a particular visible element, wait for that selector rather than assuming network activity alone means the page is ready.
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForSelector('main h1', { timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'audit-main-content.png', fullPage: true });
Choose the readiness condition according to the evidence needed: an initial-load appearance, a rendered heading, or a particular page state after interaction. Record that condition alongside the screenshot so another run can use the same procedure.

Pair visual evidence with SEO data
A screenshot shows how a page appeared at a particular moment and viewport. It does not establish indexability, crawlability, canonical correctness, structured-data validity, rankings, or how a result will appear in search. Extract values that need to be checked from the DOM or response separately. Puppeteer exposes page title, current URL, DOM evaluation, and full page content through its Page API.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsconst auditData = await page.evaluate(() => ({
title: document.title,
canonical: document.querySelector('link[rel="canonical"]')?.href ?? null,
robots: document.querySelector('meta[name="robots"]')?.content ?? null,
h1s: [...document.querySelectorAll('h1')].map(node => node.innerText.trim())
}));
console.log(auditData);
For background on the kinds of questions an SEO audit may investigate, consult Google Search Central’s documentation on JavaScript SEO and title links. A visual capture alone cannot answer those technical questions.
Make the evidence useful across audit runs
- Use filenames that identify the page or URL slug, viewport or device, date or audit run, and state—for example,
pricing-mobile-2026-10-04-full.png. - Keep capture dimensions, emulation, wait condition, and screenshot scope consistent when comparing pages.
- Store the extracted DOM values with the image if the audit needs both visual and machine-readable evidence.
- Close the browser after capture, including when an error occurs, to release its process and resources.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The screenshot is blank or missing expected content
The page may not have reached the state relevant to the audit, or the content may render asynchronously. Wait for a meaningful selector or condition, then capture. If the page is blank because navigation failed, inspect the navigation error rather than treating the image as evidence of the page’s intended appearance.

Full-page output omits lazy content
fullPage: true captures the page’s scrollable extent, but it does not guarantee that every lazy-loaded image has been requested and rendered. If those images matter, trigger the site’s lazy-loading behavior—for example, by scrolling through the page—and wait for the relevant images or content before taking the full-page screenshot.
Mobile capture looks like desktop
Confirm that emulation or the mobile viewport and user agent were applied before navigation. Viewport changes can cause a reload in some situations; configure the conditions first and navigate afterward.
The page never reaches network idle
Persistent network activity can prevent a network-idle wait from completing. Use a more appropriate navigation wait condition and then wait for the specific content required by the audit. Do not interpret a timeout as proof that the page is visually complete.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; its clean-shot process accepts the consent banner like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
Here is a cURL capture using the documented API pattern; replace the URL with your audit target. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot verify that every SEO element is correct?
No. It records appearance; verify metadata and other technical SEO values separately in the DOM or page response.
Should I use a viewport screenshot or a full-page screenshot for a visual comparison?
Use the scope that matches the audit question, then keep the scope and viewport identical across the pages or runs being compared.
