In iOS 27, use Settings > Apps > Phone to choose how your iPhone handles calls from unknown numbers. Select Ask Reason for Calling to have the iPhone ask an unknown caller for their name and reason before your phone rings. When you are already on a call and put on hold, tap More > Hold Assist to be notified when an agent is available.

How do you screen unknown calls on iPhone?

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then Phone.
  3. Under call screening, choose Ask Reason for Calling.

With this option, the iPhone automatically answers calls from unknown numbers and asks the caller to share their name and reason for calling. It then rings your phone and presents the caller’s response, so you can decide whether to answer. Siri speaks in the iPhone’s default language. Apple’s iOS 27 guide to screening and blocking calls describes the available modes.

Choose what happens to unknown numbers

Setting What happens Choose it when
Never Call Screening is off; calls from unsaved numbers ring normally. You want unknown callers to ring without screening.
Ask Reason for Calling The iPhone asks unknown callers for their name and reason before ringing you. You want context before deciding whether to answer.
Silence Calls from unsaved numbers are silenced, sent to voicemail, and shown in Recents. You do not want those calls to ring.

Ask Reason for Calling is screening, not blocking. It gives callers a chance to identify themselves before you decide. Silence instead prevents the phone from ringing for unsaved callers and sends them to voicemail.

How Call Screening differs from other call filters

In Phone settings, Unknown Callers moves calls from unknown numbers out of Recents and into an Unknown Callers list. Spam silences calls your carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud, sends them to voicemail, and places them in a Spam list. These filters are separate from asking callers to state their name and reason.

How do you use Hold Assist on iPhone?

  1. While on a call, wait until the other party puts you on hold.
  2. Open the call controls and tap More.
  3. Tap Hold Assist.
  4. When notified that an agent is available, tap the answer or rejoin control to return to the conversation.

Hold Assist can notify you when a live agent is available and provide a transcript of the portion you missed. Apple says the call is not recorded. Its real-time transcription is processed entirely on device, discarded when the call connects, and not stored by Apple. See Apple’s Use Hold Assist on iPhone instructions for details.

Check your settings before stepping away

Your iPhone needs to be able to alert you when the agent returns. Apple warns that Silent mode or Do Not Disturb can prevent you from hearing the incoming call. Check that your phone can ring before leaving it unattended.
