An AI model’s launch headline does not tell you whether it is available on your plan, in the app mode you use, or through your account’s current rollout. To answer “Can I use it?”, check the model picker in each relevant mode, then confirm the provider’s latest official availability or help page.
Why a launch announcement may not answer your question
“Available” can mean several different things: access in a consumer app, a work or coding environment, an API, a staged rollout, or a restricted program. A model’s name in an announcement is not proof that it appears in your account or is included with your subscription.

Access can depend on the product surface, mode, plan, usage terms, region or eligibility program, and rollout timing. A provider may also update plan terms after launch, so an announcement alone may become outdated.

Check the model picker in every mode you use
- Open the product surface you want to use. Check the consumer app, work mode, coding environment, or other relevant interface separately.
- Open its model picker. Look through the full list and inspect any model descriptions or hover details; a model name may not appear in the first-level menu.
- Repeat for each mode. A model visible in one mode may not be offered in another. Treat what you see as an account-specific result, not a universal statement about the product.
- Note the exact model name and any access wording. Distinguish included use from usage-based credits, and note any message about eligibility or limited access.
A missing model in your picker means it is not currently exposed to that account in that mode. It does not, by itself, establish why: the model could require another plan, be rolling out gradually, or be limited to a separate program or surface.

Confirm the terms on the provider’s current official page
Find the provider’s newest availability announcement or help page and read the sentence that specifies who can use the model, where, and on what terms. Prefer a current help page for plan and usage rules; a launch post may describe initial access rather than later subscription details.

- Surface: Does the statement cover the consumer app, a work mode, a coding tool, or the API?
- Eligibility: Which plan, seat, region, or access program is named?
- Cost of use: Is usage included, subject to a limit, or billed through usage credits?
- Restrictions: Is access generally available, staged, or limited to trusted partners or researchers?
- Your account: Does the model actually appear in the relevant picker?
If the official page and picker appear to disagree, rely on neither inference alone: check the page’s date and exact product scope, then consult the provider’s current help information for your plan. Access rules can change, and an account may not yet reflect a broader announcement.

What “available” looked like in dated examples
The following examples reflect provider statements recorded on 25 September 2026, not guarantees of availability today. They illustrate why the access route and eligibility matter.

| Provider example | What the cited statement said | What to verify for yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic models | Anthropic’s 1 September 2026 announcement described Fable 5.1 as generally available and Mythos 5.1 as available only through trusted access programs. Its help information recorded Fable plan differences: standard use on Max and certain premium seats, with Pro and some other seats using pay-as-you-go usage credits. It said Max use could reach 50% of weekly limits at no extra cost. | Check the current Claude help page for the model, seat, usage-credit terms, and any trusted-access eligibility. Do not assume the announcement’s terms remain current. |
| OpenAI models | The recorded availability page described GPT-6 Astra access across Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, while the Pro variant was limited to Pro, Business, and Enterprise. A help page placed Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus users. | Check the current model picker in the specific ChatGPT or Codex mode you intend to use, then confirm the current plan rules. |
| Google models | Google’s 2 September 2026 announcement said Gemini 3.8 Flash was available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers across specified consumer surfaces, while its Cyber version was for trusted defenders through the Fairwind Program. | Check which consumer surfaces and subscriptions the current announcement names, and whether your account’s picker shows the model. |
| xAI model | xAI’s 21 September 2026 announcement said Grok 4.7 was available in Cursor, Grok Build, and the Grok API. The cited sentence did not name the consumer Grok app. | Confirm the precise product surface. An announcement naming developer tools or an API does not establish access in the consumer app. |
Account-specific checks recorded on 25 September 2026 found different picker results between OpenAI Chat and Work modes, a Google account that did not show the announced model, and Grok modes showing an earlier model. Those observations are limited to the accounts and date checked; they are not universal product tests or current availability assurances.
Availability has more than one access route
In her 2023 paper The Gradient of Generative AI Release, researcher Irene Solaiman describes “six levels of access to generative AI systems: fully closed; gradual or staged access; hosted access; cloud-based or API access; downloadable access; and fully open.” The distinction helps explain why a model can be “available” without appearing in a consumer app: its access route may be an API, a hosted service, a staged program, or something else.
For an individual user, the practical answer is narrower than the release label: whether the model is offered through the surface you want, under your eligibility and usage terms, in your account now.
