If a banking app blocks screen recording or your video shows a black screen, the app or operating system may be protecting sensitive information. A normal recorder cannot guarantee capture of a protected screen. Don’t try to bypass the restriction: use an official bank record for transaction evidence, or a demo account or mock screen for a tutorial or bug report.
Why a banking app recording may be black
On Android, an app can mark its window with FLAG_SECURE. Android says this prevents screenshots and keeps the window from appearing on non-secure displays, such as casting to a TV or projector. Android specifically identifies banking apps and password managers as use cases. See Android’s guidance on securing sensitive activities.

A black frame can have other causes, so it does not prove that a particular bank app uses FLAG_SECURE. App and device behavior varies, and no single implementation applies to every bank.

Apple’s standard Control Center recorder starts a recording, but some apps may not allow audio or video capture. An app can also detect screen capture or mirroring and hide or redact sensitive fields. See Apple’s screen-recording instructions and its capture-state documentation.

What to do instead
For proof of a payment, balance, or transaction
- Look for a bank-issued transaction receipt or confirmation in the app.
- If available, download or export the transaction history or statement.
- If you cannot find the record, contact the bank through its official support route and ask what documentation it can provide.
Available records and export options depend on the bank. An official receipt, statement, or transaction-history export is a more suitable record than a screen video.
For a tutorial or bug report
- Use a bank-provided demo environment, demo account, or mock interface rather than a live account.
- Use the device’s normal screen recorder only on screens the app permits you to capture. Stop if protected content appears black or the app warns that capture is restricted.
- Before sharing any permitted recording or screenshots, remove names, account numbers, balances, card details, and authentication codes.
How to start a standard screen recording
iPhone or iPad
- Open Control Center and tap the Record control.
- Wait for the countdown, then leave Control Center to begin recording.
- Stop using the on-screen recording indicator or Control Center. Recordings are saved in Photos.
Apple notes that some apps may restrict audio or video recording, and screen recording cannot run at the same time as screen mirroring. If the bank app blocks capture, these steps do not override its restriction. See Apple Support’s instructions.

Android
Use the device’s built-in screen recorder only where the banking app permits recording. Android’s menus vary by device, and a protected window may remain blank even when recording starts normally.

Android’s screenshot-detection API, available from Android 14, can notify an app about certain user-initiated screenshots taken with hardware buttons; it does not give the app the screenshot image. That detection feature is distinct from FLAG_SECURE, which is the documented control for preventing activity content from appearing in screenshots and on non-secure displays. Android also distinguishes user-approved screen projection from silent capture: since Android 10, screen-buffer capture without user consent is restricted, and MediaProjection requires user consent. That consent does not imply permission to record a bank app’s protected window. See the Android Open Source Project guidance on restricted screen reading.
Google Play requires apps to respect another app’s FLAG_SECURE declaration and prohibits facilitating ways around it. Its Device and Network Abuse policy states: “For security and privacy purposes, all apps distributed on Google Play are required to respect the FLAG_SECURE declaration of other apps.” Don’t root or jailbreak a device, install capture-bypass software, or use another tool to defeat the restriction.

What the Android reliability figure means
Android Developers says FLAG_SECURE does not correctly predict active screen recording in every case. For Android 11 (API 30) and lower, the page says the control helps reliably on around 70% of devices, noting that some devices can record keyboard taps. That figure is limited to those older Android versions; it is not a current all-version failure rate or a statistic about banking apps. The page was last updated March 6, 2026.
