Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A 15-minute test can help you decide whether an AI tool deserves more investigation for one specific, low-risk task. It cannot establish that the tool is generally accurate, safe, fair, or suitable for workplace deployment. Treat it as a screening exercise: define what success looks like, test a representative example and an edge case, check data handling, then decide whether to reject the tool, explore it further, or pilot it cautiously.
Set the limits of a 15-minute test
This is a practical screening method, not an official standard, validated benchmark, or guarantee of suitability. The right test depends on the task, the people affected, and the consequences of an error. NIST describes AI evaluation as context-specific; its ARIA approach includes model testing, red teaming, and user testing, which go well beyond one short session. The Australian National AI Centre advises testing before deployment and monitoring afterward. See NIST’s ARIA Evaluation Planning Manual and the National AI Centre’s foundations guidance.

Use this screen only with a low-risk task and non-sensitive input. If the tool will handle personal or confidential information, or its output could affect safety, rights, finances, health, or other important outcomes, do not treat a quick trial as clearance. More extensive review should match the stakes.
Run the five steps
1. Define one task and a pass condition — 2 minutes
Write down the task, what a useful result must contain, and one observable criterion for success. For example: “Turn these non-sensitive notes into a summary that preserves all three decisions and names the next owner.” That is easier to evaluate than asking whether the answer simply “looks good.” Official adoption guidance recommends acceptance criteria and test methods tied to intended use, context, and risk; see the National AI Centre implementation guidance.

2. Try a representative prompt — 4 minutes
Choose a routine example that resembles the work you actually want the tool to do. If possible, keep a known answer or trusted source nearby. Check the important claims and required details against it; fluency and confident wording are not evidence of correctness. The Australian privacy regulator warns that people can over-rely on AI and overestimate its accuracy without appropriate review. Its guidance on commercially available AI discusses these risks.
3. Probe one edge case — 3 minutes
Try an input that is deliberately incomplete, ambiguous, or slightly outside the task’s normal scope. Note whether the tool asks a useful clarifying question, communicates uncertainty, or fills gaps as if it knows the answer. This is a practical way to expose behavior worth investigating, not a standardized score or a substitute for systematic testing.

4. Check data handling and controls — 3 minutes
Before entering anything sensitive, inspect the provider’s current policy and the controls available for your account. Look for retention, whether prompts or uploads may be used to train models, who can access data, deletion options, and relevant privacy and security protections. Check your organization’s rules as well as the provider’s terms. The OAIC guidance addresses organizational privacy risks; Elsevier’s research-tool checklist includes questions about training use and data protection. The latter is designed for research institutions, so use it as a prompt for questions, not a complete checklist for every product.

5. Check workflow fit and choose an outcome — 3 minutes
Consider whether the tool fits the way the task is actually done, whether relevant sources or uncertainty can be inspected, and whether a person can review and correct the output. Workflow integration and human oversight are among the considerations in Elsevier’s research-focused checklist and the OECD due diligence guidance.

Keep a brief record of the tool and version or account context, test date, prompt, observed result, what you checked, and what remains unknown. This makes the result easier to revisit; documenting methods and results is supported by evaluation guidance, although this exact record is a practical suggestion rather than a mandated form. NIST’s evaluation planning manual describes broader evaluation planning.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose: reject, explore, or pilot cautiously
- Reject for this task: The tool misses the pass condition, handles the edge case in an unacceptable way, or has data terms incompatible with the task.
- Explore further: The result looks promising, but a single example is too little evidence to rely on. Try more representative cases and examine the provider’s documentation.
- Pilot cautiously: Consider this only for low-risk use, with an identified human reviewer and a way to notice and address problems.
A successful prompt is not enough to justify a formal deployment. For high-impact, regulated, or safety-sensitive uses, review testing information, data suitability, intended output use, oversight, and relevant user or expert input. NIST’s ARIA work uses multiple levels of testing; the Australian National AI Centre recommends risk-aligned monitoring and human oversight. See the ARIA pilot evaluation report, the OECD guidance, and the National AI Centre foundations guidance.
