If you want a copy of your own ChatGPT conversations, use ChatGPT’s official data export or the Privacy Portal. If you mean automatically scraping the ChatGPT website or its outputs, OpenAI’s Terms of Use for individual services, effective January 1, 2026, prohibit automatically or programmatically extracting data or Output. The key distinction is whose data you need and why: an account export is for obtaining your own account data; an API integration is for building an application; neither makes automated extraction from the consumer website an endorsed method.

How to export your own ChatGPT history
Request an export in ChatGPT
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account whose data you want.
- Open the profile menu and select Settings.
- Choose Data controls.
- Under Export data, select Export and confirm the request.
- When the download message arrives, open it and download the ZIP while signed in to the same account that requested the export.
OpenAI’s current Help Center instructions say an export can take up to seven days to arrive. The download link expires 24 hours after it arrives, so download the file promptly.

You can also submit a data request through OpenAI’s Privacy Portal. You may be asked to verify that you own the account using the email inbox or phone number associated with it.

Who can use the account export?
The Settings-based export is available for eligible signed-in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts. It is not available while logged out or for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. If your account is managed by one of those workspaces, contact the workspace owner.
Some ChatGPT Edu workspaces may allow exports if an administrator enables them. Availability can depend on your role, workspace settings, and data residency; check with your administrator rather than assuming the option will appear.
What the export includes—and what it does not promise
OpenAI describes the downloaded ZIP as containing chat history and other relevant account data. Treat it as sensitive: the file may contain private account information, so store it somewhere access-controlled and share it only when necessary.

- The Help Center describes the ZIP contents at a high level; it does not promise a permanent file-format contract or guarantee that every workspace feature or product surface appears in the same way.
- An export cannot restore conversations that were already deleted.
- Do not assume the ZIP is a complete, stable data feed for a program you plan to maintain. If you need ongoing application access to models, use documented API methods instead.
Why scraping the ChatGPT website is not the supported method
OpenAI’s Terms of Use for ChatGPT and other individual services, effective January 1, 2026, list “Automatically or programmatically extract data or Output” among prohibited actions. The same terms prohibit bypassing protective measures and rate limits. That makes browser automation, private endpoints, or attempts to evade restrictions unsuitable as recommended ways to collect ChatGPT content.
The OpenAI Services Agreement, also effective January 1, 2026, separately says customers may not extract data from the Services except as permitted through the Services, and may not bypass protections or usage limits. The agreement says business terms govern Enterprise, API, and other business or developer services; check the agreement that applies to your account.
Use the OpenAI API for a programmatic application
If your goal is to send prompts to OpenAI models from software you control, build against the official API rather than scraping the consumer interface. Use the current developer documentation for the endpoint and authentication method you choose, and review the relevant business or developer terms before shipping an integration.
Also review the API data-controls documentation. It describes data handling and options such as modified abuse monitoring and Zero Data Retention, but availability and conditions depend on the endpoint and account. Do not assume a particular retention control applies to every request.

Troubleshooting an export request
You cannot find Export data
Confirm that you are signed in, then check Settings → Data controls. The setting may be unavailable for your workspace type or account role. Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspace users should contact the workspace owner; Edu users should ask an administrator whether export is enabled.
The download has not arrived
OpenAI says an export may take up to seven days. Check the inbox for the email address associated with the requesting account, including spam or filtered folders. If you used the Privacy Portal, check the email or phone channel used for account verification.

The link expires 24 hours after the delivery message arrives. Submit a new request through ChatGPT or the Privacy Portal if it has expired.
You are signed into a different account
The download must be accessed while signed into the account that requested the export. Switch to that account before opening the delivery link.

Can I export chats from a ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspace?
