Use Telethon’s asynchronous TelegramClient.iter_messages() method to read a public channel’s history. You’ll need your own Telegram API credentials and an authorized account session; public visibility does not remove Telegram’s API rules or privacy obligations. The example below reads a bounded number of messages and prints their IDs, dates, and text.
What you need before reading channel history
- Python and Telethon installed in the environment where you plan to run the script.
- A Telegram account and your own
api_idandapi_hash, obtained through Telegram’s API development tools. Telegram says developers must use their own API ID; the sample credentials in documentation are placeholders. - Basic familiarity with Python’s
asyncio. Telethon is asynchronous, and its Quick-Start recommends understanding the basics.
Install Telethon in your project’s Python environment, then keep both API credentials and the authorized session out of source control. Load secrets from a protected environment or local secret store rather than placing real values in a published script.

Read a bounded batch of public channel messages
Pass the channel’s public username as the entity argument to iter_messages(). This illustrative script retrieves up to 100 messages; that is an example bound, not a universal safe quota or Telegram policy threshold.

- Replace
YOUR_API_IDandYOUR_API_HASHwith your own credentials, supplied securely in a real project. - Replace
public_channel_usernamewith the public channel username, without inventing a username for a private or unavailable channel. - Run the script. On first authorization, complete Telegram’s login flow for your account when prompted.
The context manager opens and closes the client session. Telethon’s Quick-Start demonstrates iterating messages and reading fields such as message.id and message.text. This example prints text and basic metadata; it does not download attached media.

Choose the history scope and order
Telethon’s iter_messages() reference documents controls for bounding and narrowing a history traversal. Use only the content and range needed for the task.
| Need | Control or approach | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Limit the number of messages | limit |
Stops iteration at the requested bound; use a deliberate bound rather than accidentally traversing an unbounded history. |
| Read newest to oldest | Default order | Messages are returned newest first. |
| Read oldest to newest | reverse=True |
Reverses the traversal order to oldest first. |
| Start around a date or message ID | offset_date, offset_id |
Sets an offset for the history request. |
| Restrict by message ID range | min_id, max_id |
Bounds the message IDs included. |
| Find or narrow messages | search, filter, from_user |
Applies server-side search, message-type filtering, or sender restriction. |
| Fetch selected message IDs | ids |
Requests messages by ID rather than traversing ordinary history. |
| Read replies in a thread | reply_to |
Scopes iteration to replies to a message. |
For an ongoing collector that watches new posts, a live update handler is a different design from a one-time history export. This workflow only covers channel history.

Public channel access is not the same as a discussion group
Telegram describes channels as broadcast tools and says public channels can have a permanent URL in its channel API documentation. In Telethon’s API, a Channel type can represent either a broadcast channel or a megagroup (supergroup). A discussion group associated with a channel is therefore not interchangeable with the channel’s broadcast history.

Availability and Telegram’s current behavior determine access. Telethon documents JoinChannelRequest as one way to join a public channel; that example does not establish a universal join requirement for reading history.
Handle flood waits and make exports recoverable
Telegram’s API can return FLOOD_WAIT_X, requiring a wait of X seconds before repeating the action. Respect the returned wait; do not retry immediately in a tight loop or rely on a fixed extraction speed. Telethon documents wait behavior for history calls, including a wait_time option whose value may need adjustment. Telegram RPC errors and Telethon’s history reference describe the relevant behavior.
- For an export that may be interrupted, persist the latest processed message ID and resume from a suitable offset.
- Record enough message and channel context to detect duplicates rather than silently appending the same records twice.
- Handle network and RPC errors explicitly, and allow a required server wait before retrying.
- For large exports, Telethon offers a takeout facility where applicable. It is not a rate-limit bypass: some calls in takeout sessions have lower flood limits, and initialization can raise
TakeoutInitDelayErrorwith a required delay in seconds. Follow Telethon’s takeout documentation and server wait requirements.
Protect credentials and respect Telegram’s rules
The local session created during authorization is sensitive. Telethon warns that anyone with a StringSession can log in and do anything the account can do; treat a session file or string as a credential. Keep it private, do not commit it, publish it in a notebook, or paste it into an issue tracker. See Telethon’s session documentation.
Telegram says API clients are monitored and warns: “If you use the Telegram API for flooding, spamming, faking subscriber and view counters of channels, you will be banned forever.” Read its API application guidance and comply with the Telegram API Terms of Service. Those terms require privacy protections and prohibit using, accessing, or aggregating Telegram platform data to train, fine-tune, or otherwise develop, enhance, or deploy AI/ML models.
