How to Check Whether a Steam Game Will Run Well on a Handheld PC

A Steam Deck badge helps identify compatibility and setup issues, but recent reports for your exact handheld are the better guide to performance.

Start with the game’s Steam Store compatibility notes, then look for recent performance reports for your exact handheld. Steam Deck Verified is a useful signal about compatibility and setup, but it does not guarantee a particular frame rate—or predict performance on every Windows or SteamOS handheld.

First, identify the exact game and handheld

Compatibility results are not interchangeable across devices. Valve’s Steam Deck rating applies to titles Valve has tested for Deck; it is not a rating for every PC handheld. Name the exact model—such as Steam Deck LCD, Steam Deck OLED, ASUS ROG Ally, or Lenovo Legion Go—and check that reports concern the Steam version of the game.

Also note the game edition or build. Early access games and titles that have recently received updates can behave differently from the versions described in older reports.

Read the Steam Store compatibility badge and notes

On the game’s Steam Store page, find its Steam Deck compatibility badge and open the detailed compatibility information. Valve assesses four areas: controller input, display support, seamlessness, and system support. Its Deck Verified criteria explain the categories; Steam Support says the Store page identifies Verified requirements that a Playable or Unsupported game does not currently meet in its compatibility guidance.

Read the specific note rather than treating the label as a score. A Playable rating can reflect a setup or usability issue—such as small launcher text, a need to use the touchscreen, or additional Proton or middleware support—not necessarily weak performance. Conversely, a compatibility label does not tell you whether the game holds 30, 40, or 60 frames per second in demanding scenes.

Valve says titles it has tested retain their ratings across Steam Deck LCD and OLED models. That consistency does not make the Deck rating a universal performance benchmark for other handhelds.

Check recent reports for the exact device

Use ProtonDB as community evidence

ProtonDB collects community reports about games running through Proton and on Linux, including Steam Deck experiences. Treat it as user evidence, not an official Valve test or a controlled benchmark. Open individual reports and look for the date, device, operating system or Proton version, game area tested, settings, and any launch options or workarounds.

Check Steam discussions and handheld-specific reports

Search recent SteamOS or Steam Deck discussions and reports for the exact model you own or plan to buy. The Handheld Verified Steam Curator covers devices including Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go. Its December 2025 examples include individual Deck LCD reports of 25–40 FPS on low settings and 30–45 FPS on low settings, with one suggesting a move to 720p. These are dated user observations, not predictions for another device or setup.

  • [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.

When reports conflict, compare their dates, patches, hardware, drivers, Proton versions, settings, and tested scenes. Prefer a recent cluster that matches your device over an isolated report from an older build. If a report mentions an anti-cheat or launcher problem, verify that it is still current: system support can change, and a past report does not establish the present status of a particular game.

Judge performance reports by what they actually measure

“Runs great” is not enough to predict your experience. Look for concrete observations and their context:

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner
  • Device: exact handheld model and hardware generation.
  • Workload: game location or scene, especially whether demanding sections were tested.
  • Image quality: resolution, graphics preset, and any important individual settings.
  • Performance: observed or average FPS, frame-rate cap, and whether the report discusses stutter or frame pacing.
  • Power settings: any upscaling, TDP or performance profile, or other change used to reach the result.
  • Controls and readability: whether menus work with the controller, text is legible, and a keyboard or touchscreen is needed.
  • Battery: duration only when the reporter explains the brightness, workload, and performance settings used.

Do not compare two FPS figures as if they were equivalent unless the device, resolution, settings, and game scene are similar. A higher figure may simply come from lower resolution or reduced graphics quality. Valve also notes that uncapped frame rates, higher brightness, and higher volume can drain the Steam Deck battery faster; its product information is a reminder to weigh performance against unplugged play time.

Use system requirements as an initial hardware check

Compare the game’s Steam-listed minimum and recommended requirements with the operating system, processor, memory, and graphics hardware of your exact handheld. This can flag an obvious mismatch, but listed requirements do not establish a stable frame rate or account for every demanding scene, setting, driver, Proton behavior, or battery target.

If the developer has not provided useful requirements, treat this part of the check as inconclusive and lean more heavily on recent reports for your model. Avoid turning a simple spec comparison into a numeric FPS prediction.

Compare handhelds on the same terms

If you are choosing between models, compare evidence across the same categories rather than ranking isolated FPS claims. No controlled cross-device benchmark is established here, so this is a decision checklist—not a device ranking.

What to compare Questions to ask
Compatibility What does the Steam Deck badge say, if applicable? Are there Proton, launcher, anti-cheat, or middleware notes for this device?
Sustained performance Do recent reports for the exact model cover demanding sections at stated resolution and settings?
Controls and readability Does the game work with native controller input? Are menus and text usable without a touchscreen or keyboard?
Setup effort Does it launch without changes, or require a particular Proton setting, launch option, or workaround?
Battery and portability Are battery observations based on comparable brightness, performance profile, and workload?
Operating system and game version Do reports cover SteamOS and Proton or Windows, and the Steam version you intend to play?

Set your own standard for “runs well”

Decide what matters before buying: your acceptable minimum frame rate, graphics quality, text readability, controller comfort, willingness to troubleshoot, and time away from a charger. A game that meets your target only after lowering resolution or graphics settings may still be playable for you, but that compromise belongs in the decision.

For a demanding game with mixed or sparse reports, check the current Steam purchase and refund policy before buying rather than assuming a compatibility label guarantees performance. Valve describes SteamOS as Linux-based and says Proton enables many Windows games to run; its SteamOS overview explains why compatibility can vary and why the Verified program calls out games that may not work well.
