To run an ambient channel around the clock, schedule a livestream in YouTube Studio and connect an encoder or cloud playout system that sends and loops your prerecorded videos.
What scheduling a 24/7 YouTube playlist involves
There are two separate jobs: YouTube Studio creates the livestream event and its watch page; an encoder or playout system supplies the audio and video continuously. YouTube’s API documentation likewise treats broadcasts and streams as separate resources, and describes a channel that can have a 24/7 feed alongside a separate event (YouTube Live Streaming API).

A scheduled event can appear as upcoming so viewers can visit its watch page and set reminders. The playlist itself must be configured in the software or service sending the feed; do not expect a YouTube Studio playlist to become a live broadcast automatically.
Before you schedule the event
- Check live access: YouTube’s general livestream guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Confirm eligibility in the current Live Control Room before preparing a launch (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).
- Prepare a playout source: Choose a computer-based encoder or a cloud playout service that can loop your files unattended. Verify its playlist ordering, looping, reconnect behavior, remote monitoring, and recording options. The controls and recovery behavior belong to that system, not to YouTube’s event scheduler.
- Check content rights: Make sure you have permission for livestream transmission and any replay or archive. If a rights owner uses Content ID, ask whether your channel must be allowlisted.
Schedule and start the livestream
- Open YouTube Studio: Select Create > Go Live, then open Manage and choose Schedule stream. Reuse settings from a prior stream or create a new event. YouTube’s labels can change, so use the current Live Control Room if the path differs.
- Set up the event: Enter the title and description, select privacy, and set the intended date and start time. Scheduling creates an upcoming watch page where viewers can set reminders. A trailer is optional; YouTube’s stream-settings documentation describes trailer eligibility as limited to creators with more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. This is not a requirement for scheduling the livestream (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings).
- Copy the connection details: In the event’s stream settings, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key. Enter them into the playout system’s server and stream-key fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain this connection step (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- Configure the playlist in the playout system: Select the video files, set their order, enable looping, and choose any transitions or unattended-playback options the system supports. Confirm that the output remains active between videos and after a restart or connection interruption.
- Start and check the feed: Start the encoder or playout service and wait for its preview or status to appear in Live Control Room. Check picture, sound, and the public watch page. Start the YouTube event when the control room indicates the feed is ready, following the workflow shown for your event and encoder.
Plan for a stream that must stay live
Looping and recovery
Test the full playlist cycle rather than only the opening file. Check for gaps, silent sections, unexpected end cards, mismatched audio levels, and whether the system resumes after a file finishes. Test what happens if the encoder loses its network or restarts. A 24/7 schedule depends on the playout system’s ability to reconnect and continue; YouTube’s event scheduler does not supply those controls.

Archives and replays
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that condition, so do not count on a complete automatic replay of the whole session. If replays matter, consider shorter scheduled sessions or a separate local or cloud recording workflow, then verify the current archive behavior before launch (YouTube Help: Archive live streams).
Monitoring and rehearsal
Rehearse with a private or unlisted event where appropriate. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time, previewing the feed, checking that viewers can reach the watch page, and monitoring audio and video quality (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming). For a continuous channel, also check the stream remotely after launch and confirm the playlist continues beyond its first loop.

Copyright and monetization considerations
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A license does not necessarily prevent a livestream interruption: YouTube warns that licensed content can still be affected when the channel has not been added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. Secure rights for live transmission and any replay, and confirm allowlisting with the rights owner when required (YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams).
YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live revenue features, depending on channel eligibility and settings. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, so stream duration alone does not establish that a channel will earn revenue (YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream).

Choose where the playlist runs
These are the main operational approaches, rather than a ranking of specific vendors. Features and costs vary by the software, equipment, or service you choose.
| Approach | What it means | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local computer or encoder | Your own computer or dedicated encoder runs the playlist and sends the feed to YouTube. | You control the machine directly, but continuity depends on its power, internet connection, configuration, and maintenance. |
| Cloud playout | A cloud service plays uploaded videos and sends the feed without relying on a home computer staying on. | It shifts machine and connection operations to a provider; verify looping, recovery, monitoring, archive support, terms, and price before choosing. |
An existing computer or a dedicated hardware encoder may be enough for a local setup; YouTube does not require a mini PC. Compare any proposed machine’s ability to run the encoder unattended, power use, and network reliability. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the connection requirement, not a preferred computer model (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).

Troubleshoot common failures
- The event is scheduled but no video appears: Confirm the encoder is running and that its server URL and stream key match the event. Check Live Control Room for an incoming preview before starting the event.
- The stream stops between playlist items: Check the playout system’s end-of-file behavior, loop setting, and playlist order. The schedule in YouTube Studio does not control transitions between files.
- The stream drops and does not return: Check the encoder’s network connection and its reconnect or restart settings. Verify recovery behavior with the selected software or provider; do not assume YouTube will restart the playlist feed.
- The stream is interrupted despite having music permission: Contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting and confirm your permission covers live transmission and replays. Licensed material can still trigger interruption when the channel is not allowlisted.
- A full replay is missing: A 24/7 session is longer than YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive condition. Use shorter sessions or a separate recording process if a complete replay is important.
