How to Schedule YouTube Playlist Rotations on a Raspberry Pi

Use YouTube’s embed parameters to repeat one playlist on a Raspberry Pi. Switching playlists at set times requires an additional local scheduling layer.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To repeat one YouTube playlist on a Raspberry Pi, open an embedded-player URL with listType=playlist, the playlist ID in list, and loop=1. To switch between different playlists at set times, you also need a local scheduling layer that changes the URL; YouTube’s embed parameters do not schedule playlist changes by themselves.

Choose what “playlist rotation” means

There are two different setups:

  • Repeat one playlist: YouTube plays the playlist from start to finish, then starts it again. The embed can do this with loop=1.
  • Switch between playlists on a timetable: A local script or browser page must load a different playlist URL at the chosen time. The YouTube player parameters do not provide a clock-based schedule.

The steps below cover the player setup and Raspberry Pi kiosk launch. A time-of-day scheduler requires additional implementation specific to your Raspberry Pi OS release and graphical session; the official kiosk example described here does not supply or verify such a scheduler.

Build the YouTube playlist embed URL

  1. Copy the playlist ID. Open the intended YouTube playlist and find its ID in the playlist URL, after list=. Replace PLAYLIST_ID in the example below with that value.
  2. Use the playlist player parameters. Google for Developers documents listType=playlist and list=PLAYLIST_ID for loading a playlist. When both are specified, a video ID is not required. loop=1 repeats the full playlist, while autoplay=1 starts playback when the player loads. See the YouTube IFrame Player API player parameters reference.
  3. Test the URL in Chromium. A basic URL is https://www.youtube.com/embed?listType=playlist&list=PLAYLIST_ID&autoplay=1&loop=1. Confirm that the intended playlist loads and starts before setting up kiosk launch.

Autoplay has two relevant limitations: Google says playback data collection and sharing occur when the page loads, and YouTube Help says autoplayed embedded videos do not increment views. Consider these points for an unattended public display.

Choose a direct embed or a wrapper page

A direct embed URL is the simpler option when the player should fill the screen. An HTML page wrapping the embed takes more setup, but gives you room to control layout around the player. Either approach can load and repeat a playlist; neither adds a clock-based schedule unless you implement that separately.

Google for Developers says an embedded player must have a viewport of at least 200 by 200 pixels. For a 16:9 player, Google recommends a viewport at least 480 pixels wide and 270 pixels tall. See the player parameter reference when designing a wrapper page.

Check the kiosk baseline

The Raspberry Pi kiosk tutorial uses Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit and launches Chromium from the desktop session. Its stated baseline is a Raspberry Pi 3 or newer with at least 1 GB of RAM, plus a suitable power supply, microSD card, display cable and monitor. This is a tutorial setup baseline, not a guarantee that every video resolution or playlist will perform well on every Pi.

Storage and display compatibility vary by model. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation says most models use microSD for boot media, while some support other storage. Check your model and workload before choosing a card or display connection.

Configure the kiosk launch

  1. Install and start the graphical desktop environment on the Pi, then confirm Chromium can load the tested playlist URL.
  2. Following Raspberry Pi’s kiosk-mode tutorial, add Chromium’s kiosk launch to ~/.config/labwc/autostart so it opens when the desktop loads.
  3. Use the tutorial’s Chromium-in-kiosk pattern with your wrapper page or playlist embed URL in place of its sample destinations. Validate the exact command and startup behavior on your installed OS and session.
  4. Restart the Pi and confirm the desktop starts, Chromium opens the right page, and the playlist begins. Check again after a network interruption or reboot if the display must recover unattended.

The Raspberry Pi tutorial also demonstrates opening two URLs as tabs and switching tabs every ten seconds with a script. That demonstrates timed tab switching, not a calendar schedule for replacing YouTube playlists.

Switch between separate playlists at set times

For a schedule such as “playlist A in the morning, playlist B in the evening,” something on the Pi must select the active playlist and make Chromium load its URL at the right time. That scheduler is separate from loop=1, which only repeats the currently loaded playlist.

Choose where the schedule logic lives

  • Local timer or script: The Pi runs schedule logic that selects a playlist URL and tells Chromium to load it. The service or timer configuration must match the installed Raspberry Pi OS version and graphical session.
  • Browser-side page: A page running in Chromium changes the embed URL according to its own schedule. This keeps the switching logic with the display page, but still needs a reliable way to determine the time and update the player.

The official Raspberry Pi kiosk instructions establish desktop startup and periodic tab switching, but do not establish a preferred or verified way to schedule playlist IDs by time of day. Treat either approach as an implementation choice, test it on the target Pi, and confirm that the player actually changes playlists at the intended times. Do not assume that loop=1 will move between separate playlists.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The playlist does not load: Check that the playlist ID is correct and that the URL includes both listType=playlist and list=PLAYLIST_ID.
  • The playlist plays once and stops: Confirm that the URL includes loop=1. This repeats the current playlist; it does not switch to another one.
  • Playback does not start at page load: Check for autoplay=1, then test the page directly in Chromium. Autoplay behavior should be validated on the actual display setup.
  • The kiosk does not open after boot: Confirm that the desktop session starts and that the launch entry is in the labwc autostart file used by the tutorial, ~/.config/labwc/autostart. Verify that the command and URL work in the same session when launched manually.
  • The scheduled playlist never changes: Check the scheduler’s selected URL and whether Chromium is actually being told to load it. The embed’s loop setting cannot perform this schedule for you.
  • The player is clipped or too small: Adjust the page or embed dimensions to meet Google’s minimum 200 by 200 pixel viewport; for 16:9, its recommendation is at least 480 by 270 pixels.

Or let it run in the cloud

A Raspberry Pi kiosk displays YouTube playback locally; it is not a service for keeping a YouTube live stream running. If your goal is a 24/7 pre-recorded YouTube live stream instead, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer at home, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
