You can schedule a YouTube livestream in YouTube Studio, but YouTube’s documented scheduling controls do not provide a native clock-based switch between daytime and nighttime music playlists. To make the change happen, schedule the stream on YouTube and automate the playlist change in the playback system feeding it.
What you need to schedule
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream, with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Separate daytime and nighttime music selections, ready in the playback system you plan to use.
- An encoder or streaming service that sends the playback output to YouTube and can run the playlist-change automation you need.
- Music rights that cover livestreaming and, if applicable, archived broadcasts and the territories where viewers can watch.
YouTube’s documentation explains how to schedule a live event and connect an encoder; it does not establish that YouTube Studio can change music playlists at a specified time. Keep event scheduling and playback scheduling as two separate jobs.

Schedule the YouTube livestream
- Confirm live access. Check that livestreaming is available on the correct YouTube channel before building the event. YouTube’s setup and eligibility details are in its live streaming help.
- Open the scheduling controls. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then open Manage and choose Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse settings from a previous stream. Set the channel, title, visibility, and scheduled start time carefully; confirm the intended time zone.
- Prepare the watch page. A scheduled event creates a page viewers can visit, share, and use to opt into a reminder. Promote that page before the broadcast if you want viewers to find the stream before it starts. See YouTube’s scheduled live stream guidance.
- Retrieve the connection details. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder or streaming system. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Start and verify the feed. Start the encoder early enough for YouTube’s preview to appear. Check the preview and audio, then select Go live in Live Control Room when the feed is ready. YouTube documents the encoder connection and related controls in its stream settings help.
Automate the day-to-night playlist change
Make the playlist switch in the playback system, not by relying on YouTube’s scheduled-event controls. Prepare the two selections there, then configure its scheduling or automation feature to move from the daytime set to the nighttime set at your chosen local time. The exact steps depend on the specific software or service; confirm its documentation supports scheduled playlist changes and unattended playback before relying on it.

- Choose the schedule. Decide when each selection should begin and which time zone governs the switch. Account for daylight-saving changes if your location observes them.
- Configure both selections. Verify that the daytime and nighttime playlists contain the intended tracks, play in the intended order or shuffle mode, and have enough material for the period they cover.
- Set and test the transition. Configure the playback system’s time-based change, then test it before launch. Listen for a gap, overlap, abrupt volume change, or a playback stop when the new playlist begins.
- Check the full path. Confirm that the playback system continues sending audio and video to the encoder through the change, and that the encoder continues feeding YouTube.
Do not assume a playlist switch works just because a YouTube event is scheduled. YouTube’s documented livestream controls cover event creation, stream keys, auto-start and auto-stop, and related stream settings; they do not establish a native day/night music playlist scheduler.

Test the stream and plan for interruptions
YouTube recommends preparing the encoder well ahead of the event: set it up at least two hours before the livestream and start it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Use the lead time to check the preview, audio and video quality, watch-page access, and the playlist transition. YouTube also advises testing failover and monitoring the stream continuously; see its live encoder setup guidance and stream health help.
- Open the scheduled watch page and confirm it is accessible from the channel and on a mobile device.
- Listen for clear, consistent audio and check that the visual output remains present during both playlists.
- Observe the day-to-night switch at the scheduled time rather than assuming the automation triggered.
- Test the recovery or failover process so you know what happens if the encoder or network connection fails.
- Keep monitoring audio and video while the stream runs; an encoder preview before launch does not guarantee uninterrupted operation afterward.
Understand the archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete replay. Plan for stream restarts or interruptions, and decide how you will handle the watch page and any separate recordings across broadcast segments. See YouTube’s live stream archive information.

Clear music rights before going live
YouTube’s livestream terms require the creator to have the necessary rights for the live content across Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. Read the YouTube livestream terms and confirm that each track’s license covers your intended use.

- Check that permission covers livestreaming, not only ordinary video uploads.
- Confirm whether the license also covers an archived stream, commercial use, and the territories you intend to serve.
- Ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID. YouTube says a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the owner has not allowlisted the channel.
- Do not assume Creator Music clears live use: YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says it currently does not support licensing for live content.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can produce a warning or placeholder, and the stream may be interrupted or terminated if the issue persists. YouTube’s copyright guidance points creators toward the Audio Library, original music, or third-party music only after checking the applicable license terms.

Common problems and fixes
The stream is scheduled, but there is no playlist change
The YouTube event schedules the broadcast, not the music selection. Check the playback system’s automation settings, clock, and time zone, then test the change while monitoring the encoder output.
YouTube does not show an encoder preview
Verify that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key were copied into the correct fields. Check the encoder’s connection status and the Live Control Room for stream-health messages. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder with the new key.

The playlist changes but audio cuts out
Check whether the playback system pauses or reloads the output between playlists. Test the transition before the event, and adjust its transition or playback behavior if the output does not remain continuous.

The broadcast stops or becomes unavailable
Check the encoder and network connection, then follow the recovery steps for your specific setup. YouTube recommends testing failover in advance; do not assume a particular encoder or playback system will recover automatically unless its documentation confirms that behavior.

A licensed track triggers a copyright warning
Pause use of the track and review the license and any Content ID requirements with the rights holder. A license for the music does not necessarily mean the channel has been allowlisted to avoid automated interruption.
