Use a systemd timer to decide when a job runs and a oneshot service to run a script that decides what rotation means. If you need to change the contents or order of a YouTube playlist, use an appropriately authorized YouTube Data API client; yt-dlp can inspect or select playlist entries for supported workflows, but its documented playlist features do not establish remote playlist-order editing.
Decide what “rotation” means before scheduling it
A schedule cannot define playlist behavior. First write down the exact change the job should make, such as moving an item, cycling a chosen subset, adding or removing items, or changing playlist metadata. These are different operations and may require different API calls. The title alone does not determine which behavior you want.

Keep reading or downloading entries separate from editing the remote playlist. yt-dlp documents playlist metadata and selection features; those support inspection and selection, not an established method for reordering items in a YouTube playlist. To edit the YouTube playlist
Use the YouTube Data API playlist update documentation to identify the operation and OAuth scope for the change you intend. The documented playlists.update method costs 50 quota units per call; total scheduled quota use depends on all API operations your implementation performs. A playlist resource and its metadata are not the same thing as the individual playlist items, so confirm the current endpoint documentation for the exact mutation you need before writing the client.

API access requires authorization and is subject to the YouTube API Services Terms. Store OAuth credentials so the scheduled process can access them without putting secrets in a unit file or script. Do not assume that a successful interactive API test means the service will have the same credentials or environment when run by systemd.
To inspect or download supported playlist entries
Use yt-dlp only when the job is about extracting or selecting entries for a supported site workflow, not as a playlist-order editor. Check the manpage and package version for the Debian release you run; site behavior and support can change over time.
Create a user-level systemd service and timer
Debian identifies systemd as its default init system and service manager. A user timer is a good fit when the work belongs to the logged-in account; use a system service only when you specifically need system-wide management or execution. Debian Reference demonstrates the user-timer and oneshot-service pattern. The following is an illustrative starting point, not a tested configuration; choose an interval and script path for your setup.

1. Put the rotation logic in a script or API client
Create a script that performs one defined rotation action and exits. For example, use a stable executable path such as ~/.local/bin/rotate-youtube-playlist. It should handle its own API authorization, report errors with a nonzero exit status, and avoid relying on shell aliases or interactive environment settings.
2. Define a oneshot service
Create ~/.config/systemd/user/youtube-playlist-rotate.service:

Description=Rotate a YouTube playlist
[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=%h/bin/rotate-youtube-playlistAdjust ExecStart to the actual absolute path of your executable. The service runs the task and exits; it does not define the schedule.

3. Define the timer
Create ~/.config/systemd/user/youtube-playlist-rotate.timer:

Description=Schedule YouTube playlist rotation
[Timer]
OnCalendar=daily
[Install]
WantedBy=timers.targetOnCalendar=daily is only an example. Replace it with the cadence your policy requires, and check the calendar expression on the Debian/systemd release you will use. Decide separately what should happen after a missed run, how failures are retried, and how the script logs its actions; the example does not configure those policies.
4. Enable and inspect the timer
Reload the user manager, enable the timer, and inspect its state:

systemctl --user list-timersTo run the service immediately for a manual check, use systemctl --user start youtube-playlist-rotate.service. Inspect status and journal output when something fails:
systemctl --user status youtube-playlist-rotate.service
journalctl --user -u youtube-playlist-rotate.serviceThese are user-manager commands. A system-level unit instead uses system-wide unit locations and systemctl commands without --user; choose that only if the job needs system-level execution.
Make the scheduled environment reliable
A systemd-launched job does not necessarily inherit the environment of your interactive shell. Use explicit paths, provide required environment variables through an appropriately protected configuration, and make sure credentials are readable only by the account that needs them. Test the script directly as the same account before relying on its timer.

- Network and API availability: handle transient connection or API errors in the client and decide whether the next run or an explicit retry should recover.
- Credentials: verify the user service can read its OAuth data without exposing tokens in logs, command-line arguments, or unit contents.
- Observability: send useful error messages to standard error or the journal, and use the service status and journal commands above to diagnose failures.
- Scope and quota: request only the authorization needed for the chosen operation and estimate quota from the complete set of API calls in each run, not just the update call.
