Schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then use your streaming software to send video and audio to it at the planned time. In Live Control Room, choose Create > Go Live > Manage > Schedule stream; when it is time to broadcast, connect your encoder with the event’s stream key, start sending, wait for the preview, and click Go live.
Before you schedule: check channel eligibility
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements. This guide covers the encoder method, which uses streaming software such as OBS to send the broadcast feed.

Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Select Manage > Schedule stream.
- Choose Reuse settings to copy a previous event, or Create new to set up a fresh stream.
- Enter or review the title, description, date and time, audience, and privacy setting, then save the event. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance says scheduled streams may appear as upcoming in subscribers’ feeds, where viewers can choose Notify me.
Do not assume the privacy default is right for your event. YouTube says the default is private for users aged 13–17 and public for users aged 18 or older; verify the actual setting before saving. Reusing settings copies the prior event’s metadata, settings, and stream key, though you can change the stream after creating it. Check the event details, privacy, and selected key every time you reuse an event.

Connect your streaming software and go live
- At the event time, open the scheduled stream in Live Control Room. In your encoder, select YouTube as the streaming service if it is available. Otherwise, copy the stream URL into the encoder’s server field and the stream key into its key field. The exact labels and location vary by software.
- Start streaming from the encoder. This sends the feed to YouTube but does not, by itself, make the event public.
- Wait until the incoming feed appears in Live Control Room’s preview, check that picture and sound are correct, then select Go live.
- When the broadcast is finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
YouTube’s encoder instructions cover the connection and start sequence: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. The key distinction is that YouTube Studio schedules and controls the event; the encoder sends its live audio and video.

Protect the stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key off screen and do not share it publicly. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; replace the old key in the encoder before the next broadcast. Reused settings carry over the previous key, so verify you are sending to the intended event.
Pre-broadcast checklist
YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are recommendations, not guarantees against a failed connection.

- Confirm the scheduled event’s date, time, title, audience, and privacy.
- Check the encoder’s destination and stream key, then test that YouTube receives the feed.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview before selecting Go live.
- Check that the event is accessible from the channel and watch pages, including on mobile.
- Monitor audio and video quality throughout the broadcast.
A microphone, webcam, or other production equipment is optional; YouTube says expensive equipment is not needed to begin. Scheduling itself does not require buying a new encoder or accessory.

Optional: add a trailer to the scheduled stream
A trailer is a promotion option, not a requirement for scheduling. YouTube says it is available to creators with more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes; the trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long. Add it from the scheduled stream’s Manage area in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Troubleshooting a scheduled encoder stream
- The scheduled event is missing or unavailable: confirm that you are signed into the intended channel, that live streaming is enabled for it, and that the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements.
- YouTube shows no incoming preview: check that the encoder is running and that its server URL and stream key belong to the scheduled event. If you reused settings, verify that the copied key is the intended one.
- The preview appears, but the broadcast has not started: select Go live in Live Control Room after checking the preview. Starting the encoder only sends the feed.
- The event appears with the wrong visibility: edit or correct the scheduled event’s privacy setting in YouTube Studio; do not rely on the age-based default.
- The stream key may have been exposed: have a channel owner or manager reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement key.
- Viewers cannot find the event: check its schedule and privacy, then verify access from the channel and watch pages and on mobile before the start time.
