Best Screen Recording Software for Linux: OBS, Kooha, and More

OBS Studio is the best all-round starting point for Linux screen recording, while Kooha and desktop-native tools can suit simple clips. Check your session and compositor before choosing.

OBS Studio is the strongest starting point for most Linux users who need more than a quick screen clip: it supports multiple capture sources, configurable scenes, audio mixing, recording, and live streaming. For a simple capture, try a desktop-native recorder or Kooha instead—but first check whether your session uses X11 or Wayland and whether the app supports your specific desktop and capture needs.

Which Linux screen recorder should you choose?

Tool Best fit What to check
OBS Studio Tutorials, presentations, gameplay, and recordings combining several sources or requiring audio adjustments Your distribution’s installation route and whether your exact capture workflow works in your X11 or Wayland session
Kooha or a desktop-native recorder Quick, straightforward screen captures Whether it captures the full screen, a window, or a region as needed, and how it handles microphone or system audio
wf-recorder or wl-screenrec More specialized Wayland-related workflows Compatibility with your desktop or compositor and the specific capture mode you need
SimpleScreenRecorder An option to compare for traditional desktop recording Current compatibility for your session; the available comparison coverage does not establish a current Wayland compatibility matrix

OBS is free and open source, supports Linux, and combines video recording with live-streaming capabilities. Its breadth is useful for involved projects, but it does not make it the simplest choice for every one-off clip. See the OBS Project’s product information.

Why OBS Studio is the best all-round starting point

OBS is designed for real-time audio and video capture and mixing. You can arrange sources in scenes and adjust audio with its mixer, making it a practical choice when a recording needs more than a single screen image—for example, a tutorial with screen capture and narration, or gameplay with a webcam overlay.

  • Multiple sources and scenes: combine and arrange capture sources for a composed recording.
  • Audio control: manage audio in the mixer and use multiple input sources. A microphone is optional, not a requirement for silent screen recording.
  • Recording and streaming: use one application for local recordings and live-streaming workflows.

OBS describes itself as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” That is the OBS Project’s product statement, not a comparative performance claim.

Check Linux and Wayland compatibility before committing

The OBS Project lists both X Window System and Wayland among its Linux system requirements, while cautioning that meeting the stated requirements does not guarantee that a particular system can record or stream successfully. Check the official system requirements, then test the exact task you need on your machine.

Confirm your session and capture mode

  • Identify whether your current desktop session runs X11 or Wayland.
  • Note the desktop environment or, on Wayland, the compositor. Capture behavior can differ between environments.
  • Decide whether you need full-screen, window, or region capture.
  • Test microphone and system audio separately; a working picture does not establish that the audio path is working.
  • If your workflow includes a webcam or another video source, verify that source in the application too.

A recent comparison of Wayland screen recorders emphasizes these compositor and capture-mode differences. Treat it as practical guidance, not a guarantee that a given app works—or fails—on every Wayland setup. For Kooha, desktop-native tools, wf-recorder, or wl-screenrec, confirm the current project guidance and test your own environment before relying on a feature.

Install OBS using your distribution’s guidance

  1. Open the OBS Project’s Linux installation guide.
  2. Follow the instructions for your Linux distribution rather than assuming one package route applies everywhere.
  3. Launch OBS and configure the capture source, audio inputs, and output you intend to use.
  4. Make a short test recording in the same desktop session and with the same capture mode planned for your real recording. Check the resulting video and audio before starting a longer session.

Choose by workflow, not by a universal ranking

For a tutorial, presentation, or gameplay recording

Start with OBS if you need scenes, more than one input, audio adjustments, or a path to streaming. You can add a microphone for narration, but silent capture does not require one. Webcams and capture cards are optional categories for workflows that need an external video source; check Linux compatibility for any device before buying it.

For a quick clip

Try Kooha or the recorder built into your desktop if you want a simpler capture. Before recording something important, verify the capture area and whether the tool meets your audio needs. Simpler tools may suit a basic clip better; they should not be assumed to replace OBS for every multi-source workflow.

For a Wayland-specific workflow

Compare the relevant desktop-native option, Kooha, wf-recorder, and wl-screenrec against your compositor and required capture mode. The names appear in recent comparisons, but feature details and compatibility should be checked against current project documentation for your setup.

Common problems and what to check

  • The recorder cannot capture the intended screen or window: confirm whether the session is X11 or Wayland, then verify support for your desktop or compositor and the exact screen, window, or region mode.
  • Video records but narration is missing: check that the intended microphone is selected and that its audio reaches the application’s mixer. Make a short test recording and play it back.
  • Screen capture works but system audio does not: check the chosen audio source and test it independently from the microphone. Audio routing can depend on your desktop and configuration.
  • An installed package does not match your instructions: return to the official installation guidance for your distribution; package availability and installation routes are distribution-specific.
  • A tool works in one session but not another: recheck the session type and compositor. Linux capture support is not uniform across X11 and Wayland environments.
