Use Playwright to capture the page, then schedule its script with cron or a systemd timer. To run a cron job at India-local time without changing the whole server’s time zone, set CRON_TZ=Asia/Kolkata in the crontab—provided the installed cron daemon supports that setting. For a server-wide change, use timedatectl after checking what else depends on the current zone.
What you need before scheduling captures
- An Ubuntu server with a supported language runtime, Playwright, and its browser installed. Follow the installation instructions for the Playwright release and host architecture you actually use; the API reference documents screenshot capture, not a tested installation recipe for every Ubuntu version.
- A capture script that names the target URL and output path explicitly, runs from a stable working directory, and exits with a useful status.
- A scheduler: cron for a compact recurring schedule, or a systemd timer if you want a managed service and its associated status and logs.
- A decision about time zone, output retention, and access to screenshots. If the page requires authentication or contains personal data, protect credentials and image files.
Playwright’s basic flow is to launch a browser, create a context and page, navigate to the target, save the screenshot, and close the browser. Its screenshot API supports a path, full-page capture, and image type. See the Playwright Page API for the version-specific options.

networkidle is a practical choice for pages that settle after loading, but some sites maintain ongoing network activity. If navigation times out, use a wait strategy suited to that page and verify the resulting screenshot before scheduling repeated runs.
Choose cron or a systemd timer
Cron: straightforward recurring jobs
Ubuntu Noble’s crontab(5) documentation describes five schedule fields—minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week—followed by the command. Cron checks entries every minute. User crontabs and the system crontab are different: a system crontab also has a username field. Use the syntax and installation location for the account you intend to run the capture.
For example, a user crontab entry for 09:00 every day is:

0 9 * * * /usr/bin/python3 /opt/site-shots/capture.pyReplace the interpreter and script paths with the actual paths on your server. Use absolute paths because scheduled jobs may not inherit the interactive shell’s working directory or environment.
Systemd timer: managed service behavior
A systemd timer can be a good fit when you want the capture to run as a service with explicit service behavior and systemd status/logging. The available Ubuntu documentation covers time specifications, but does not establish a complete timer-unit example for every installed version. Check the installed systemd version and the relevant systemd.timer documentation before adopting a unit file; then verify its next-run time and execution on the host.
Make the schedule use India time
Set India time for one cron table
Ubuntu Noble’s crontab manual documents CRON_TZ as a per-table time zone. Put it before the schedule entries in that crontab:

CRON_TZ=Asia/Kolkata
0 9 * * * /usr/bin/python3 /opt/site-shots/capture.pyThis expresses the 09:00 schedule in the Asia/Kolkata zone without changing the host’s global time zone. The same manual notes that cron log-file timestamps use the cron daemon’s local time zone, which may differ from the schedule’s zone. Confirm that the cron implementation and version installed on your server support the documented semantics; do not assume every cron package behaves identically.
Change the server-wide time zone
If the whole machine should use India time, first inspect its current settings and available zones:

timedatectl statustimedatectl can inspect and change the system-wide time zone and show synchronization status. A global change affects other services on the host, so a per-crontab setting is often preferable when only the screenshot schedule needs India time. See the Ubuntu timedatectl manual.
Use an explicit zone with systemd only after validating it
Systemd’s time parser accepts IANA time-zone identifiers from the installed database. The Ubuntu systemd.time manual explains time specifications and refers to timedatectl list-timezones for supported zones. Check that the timer syntax you choose supports an explicit zone on your installed systemd version, then inspect the next scheduled run before relying on it.

Install and verify the scheduled job
- Run the script manually. Use the intended account, absolute paths, and the working directory expected by the scheduler.
- Check runtime dependencies. Confirm the browser binary is installed and usable, required environment variables are present, and the host can reach the target site.
- Check output access. Ensure the scheduled account can write to the destination directory and that the file does not end up in an unintended location.
- Install the schedule. For a user crontab, edit the intended account’s crontab with
crontab -e. UseCRON_TZ=Asia/Kolkataabove the job if the installed daemon supports it. - Verify an actual run. Inspect scheduler status or logs, check that an output file exists, and confirm its timestamp and contents. A valid schedule line alone does not prove the capture succeeded.
- Set retention deliberately. Decide whether each run replaces one image or creates a dated file, and remove or archive old captures according to your storage and privacy needs.
Keep visual captures useful and repeatable
Website screenshots can vary when the operating system, browser version, browser settings, or hardware changes. If you use captures for visual comparisons, keep those factors as consistent as practical. Playwright describes these sources of variation in its visual comparisons guide.

For reliability, treat the scheduled process as more than a timer: give it stable paths, a clear exit status, appropriate output permissions, and a way to inspect failures. The server’s network, browser installation, target-site behavior, and storage capacity all remain operational dependencies you need to monitor.
Common problems and fixes
- The script works in a shell but not in cron: scheduled jobs may have a different working directory and environment. Use absolute paths, set any required environment variables explicitly, and test under the scheduled account.
- The screenshot file is missing: check the process exit status and scheduler logs, confirm the destination directory exists and is writable, and verify the script’s output path.
- Browser launch fails: confirm that Playwright’s browser is installed for the same environment and account that runs the job, and follow installation guidance for the exact release and host architecture.
- Navigation times out: check server network access and target availability. Some pages never become idle because of continuing requests; choose a wait condition suitable for that page and inspect a manual capture.
- The job runs at the wrong hour: check the server zone with
timedatectl status, confirmCRON_TZis supported by the installed daemon and appears before the cron entry, or validate the systemd timer’s next-run time. - The image changes between runs: keep the operating system, browser version, settings, and hardware stable where possible; the page itself may also change.
- Logs appear to use a different time zone: Ubuntu’s cron documentation distinguishes the per-table
CRON_TZschedule from log timestamps, which use the cron daemon’s local zone.

Self-hosted scheduling or a managed capture?
Playwright with cron or systemd gives you control of the browser runtime and server, but you operate installation, scheduling, storage, permissions, and failure checks. A managed screenshot API delegates browser execution, but you should verify the provider’s execution location, timing behavior, reliability commitments, output handling, current pricing, and data policies before depending on it. No. It applies to the cron table’s schedule; changing the machine-wide zone is a separate operation with timedatectl.
