Use an Azure Pipelines YAML schedules: trigger to start a recurring job, run Playwright to capture the page, and publish the screenshot directory as a pipeline artifact. Schedule the pipeline with YAML cron
Put the schedule in the pipeline’s main YAML file—not in a template. The branch filter determines which branches receive the schedule, and the YAML in each relevant branch must define the schedule and matching filters.

mainto the branch that contains the YAML and should receive the scheduled run. Usebranches.excludeif you also need to exclude specific branches. - Without
always: true, Azure Pipelines runs a scheduled build by default only when source code or pipeline settings have changed since the last successful scheduled run. Keepalways: truefor a recurring capture regardless of changes. - The
batchoption controls behavior when a prior scheduled run is still in progress. Microsoft documents it as available in Azure DevOps Server 2022.1 and higher; check the applicable documentation and edition before relying on it.
Check schedule limits
Microsoft Learn lists Azure Pipelines limits of around 1,000 scheduled runs per pipeline per week and 10 runs per pipeline per 15 minutes. These are Azure Pipelines limits, not general CI performance benchmarks. Avoid using a schedule for very frequent polling without accounting for them. [Microsoft Learn]

Install Playwright and capture the page
The following example is a Node.js Playwright Test pipeline. It installs Node, installs project dependencies and browser dependencies, runs the test, and writes a full-page screenshot to screenshots/. Commit a lockfile so npm ci can install the project’s pinned dependencies.

}Replace the example URL with a site you are authorized to capture. The timeout behavior of networkidle depends on the target page; if the site keeps network connections open, choose a more suitable navigation condition or wait for a specific selector.
Azure Pipelines YAML job
Append a job like this to the same pipeline YAML. On Linux, npx playwright install --with-deps installs browsers and system dependencies. Playwright’s CI guide says Windows and macOS agents need no additional configuration beyond installing Playwright and running it; Linux requires browser/system dependencies or a supported Playwright container. Download the captured screenshots
The agent’s working files do not serve as a durable download location after a job ends. Publishing the output directory with PublishPipelineArtifact@1 makes the files available as a pipeline artifact associated with that run. Open the completed run and retrieve its website-screenshots artifact. Microsoft’s and Playwright’s cited guidance documents the publishing task; the exact portal navigation can vary with the Azure DevOps interface. [Playwright CI]

Make recurring captures more reliable
Keep the rendering environment consistent
Browser version, operating system, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other rendering factors can change pixels. If you are comparing screenshots across runs, use a consistent agent and browser setup for captures and comparisons. Playwright recommends setting CI workers to 1 unless the CI system is powerful and self-hosted. [Playwright CI]

A scheduled capture-and-archive pipeline needs to navigate, save an image, and publish it. Visual regression testing is a different workflow: Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates a baseline on first use and compares later captures against it, so you also need reviewed baselines and a policy for accepting or rejecting pixel differences. Troubleshoot a missing run or artifact
- No scheduled run appears: Check that the five cron fields are valid and that you converted the time and weekday to UTC. Verify that the branch filter includes the branch containing the schedule and that the YAML in that branch defines it.
- A UI schedule is active: Schedules defined in pipeline settings take precedence over YAML schedules. If you remove UI schedules so YAML can take over, Microsoft says to push a change before YAML schedules are reevaluated. [Microsoft Learn] [Microsoft Learn]
- Runs stop when the repository is unchanged: Add
always: trueif you need a capture on every scheduled occurrence, not only after source or pipeline-setting changes. - The scheduled-runs preview looks empty: Azure DevOps previews scheduled runs only for the next seven days. Review the cron expression, branch filters, UI schedule settings, and
alwaysbehavior as well. - Browser installation fails on Linux: Install Playwright’s browser and system dependencies with
npx playwright install --with-deps, or use a supported Playwright container. On Windows or macOS agents, the Playwright CI guide says no additional configuration is required beyond installing Playwright and running it. - The run succeeds but no image is downloadable: Confirm the screenshot path matches the artifact task’s
targetPath, that the test reachedpage.screenshot(), and that the publish step ran. A failed navigation or an incorrect relative path can leave the target directory empty. - The screenshot differs between runs: Check browser and agent consistency, viewport, headless mode, and the page’s dynamic content. A capture pipeline archives images; it does not itself establish whether a visual change is acceptable.

Can I schedule screenshots more than once a day?
Yes. Add a cron expression for the recurrence you need, while staying within Azure Pipelines’ documented scheduled-run limits.
Can I make the scheduled job compare screenshots automatically?
Yes, but that is visual regression rather than simple capture-and-archive. Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() compares against baselines that you need to review and manage.
