A staging screenshot is usually available after deployment, not before it. Treat the successful-deployment run as a pre-production release decision: inspect its result before promoting that candidate. Use cron for periodic drift checks, not as a substitute for a release-linked trigger.

Set up a deployment-triggered Playwright check
1. Install Playwright and browser dependencies in CI
Add Playwright Test to your project and install its browser binaries and required system dependencies on the CI runner. Follow the install-and-run sequence for your CI provider in the official Playwright CI guide. Keep the runner environment consistent with the one used to create your screenshot baseline.
2. Write a screenshot assertion
Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion for each page or component that matters to the release. For example, a test can navigate to a page, wait for a known page element, and then compare a screenshot:

});Playwright creates a reference image on the first run. Later runs compare their screenshots with that baseline. The first run establishes what future runs will compare against; it does not, by itself, establish that the design is correct. See Playwright snapshot testing.
3. Run only after staging deployment succeeds
Configure the CI workflow to respond to a successful deployment-status event and pass the deployment target URL into the test as PLAYWRIGHT_TEST_BASE_URL. The Playwright CI documentation shows this pattern. Set the base URL from the deployment event rather than hard-coding a URL that could point to a different environment. If your deployment process can target both staging and production, check the environment or deployment target before starting the visual job.

GitHub environments can represent deployment targets such as staging and can enforce protections, branch restrictions, and environment-scoped secrets. Select the intended environment and make only the credentials the screenshot job needs available to it. See GitHub deployment environments.

Upload the Playwright HTML report or relevant screenshots as CI artifacts so reviewers can inspect the failure, not just see a red job. Playwright’s CI example includes uploading the HTML report and recommends a consistent environment for visual-regression work. Store and review baseline images deliberately: update them only when a visual change is intended and has been reviewed.

Add an optional recurring schedule
If you want snapshots even when no release is happening, add a GitHub Actions schedule trigger to the same workflow or to a workflow that invokes the same tests. Scheduled workflows use the latest commit on the default branch and default to UTC. GitHub’s schedule syntax also supports optional IANA time zones. Choose an off-minute rather than 00 because GitHub warns that busy periods can delay or drop scheduled runs. Schedule event syntax and behavior
A schedule is a monitoring cadence, not a release gate: it may run before or after a deployment and is not guaranteed to start at an exact time. In public GitHub repositories, scheduled workflows are automatically disabled after 60 days without repository activity, so check that condition if a recurring run stops.

Keep visual comparisons reliable
- Hold the capture environment steady. Playwright notes that screenshot rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep baseline and comparison runs on the same OS and browser setup. Playwright snapshot guidance
- Make the page state predictable. Use a stable test account and data, wait for the expected content, and control animations or other dynamic content where appropriate. These are practical ways to reduce noise; there is no universal staging-data strategy.
- Review unexpected changes before updating snapshots. A changed screenshot indicates a visual difference, not whether that difference is acceptable. Inspect the diff and pair visual checks with functional checks where needed.
- Keep the baseline history clear. Treat baseline updates as reviewed code changes so an intentional redesign is distinguishable from an accidental snapshot refresh.
Troubleshoot common failures
The job checks the wrong site
Confirm the deployment event supplies the intended staging URL and that the job uses it as PLAYWRIGHT_TEST_BASE_URL. Where multiple environments are deployed, gate the test on the staging target rather than assuming every successful deployment is staging.

The screenshot diff fails on an unchanged page
Check whether the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode differs from the baseline run. Then check for changing content, delayed elements, or animations. Restore a consistent capture environment and wait for a predictable page state before considering a baseline update.

The first run has no known-good comparison
The first Playwright screenshot run creates the baseline. Review that image as an intentional reference before relying on later comparisons; it is not proof that the page is visually correct.
The scheduled job does not run when expected
Do not treat cron as an exact-time trigger. Move it away from the start of the hour, confirm the workflow is on the default branch, and check whether an inactive public repository has had its scheduled workflows disabled after 60 days without activity.
A screenshot change is mistaken for a release verdict
Use the diff to identify a visual change, then have a reviewer decide whether it is expected. A screenshot comparison does not determine whether the release is acceptable and does not replace functional tests.
