Set the Windows PC’s time zone to India Standard Time (IST) and check the task’s displayed next run before relying on it: the scheduler uses the machine’s configured local time.
1. Set up Node.js and Playwright

Install Node.js on the Windows computer that will run the captures.

Open PowerShell in a project folder and initialise a Node.js project:

Install Playwright:
npm install playwright -
Install the browser runtime required by the Playwright version you installed, following its installation guidance. Run the script interactively before scheduling it, so you can resolve missing browser or dependency errors in the same Windows account and environment.

2. Create a screenshot script
Save this as capture.js in the project folder. Replace the example URL with the page to capture. The script creates its output folder if needed and writes a timestamped, full-page PNG for every successful run.

Choose what the capture records

For only the visible viewport, remove
fullPage: true. Keep the viewport dimensions fixed if you want comparable captures. -
For a page-length image, keep
fullPage: true. Pages with lazy-loaded images or content that appears after scrolling may need additional handling to load that content before capture.The Tool Desk

Use a timestamped name to retain a sequence of captures, as in the example. To keep only the latest image, use a fixed filename instead; each successful run will overwrite it.

Pages with animation, changing data, consent dialogs, or personalised content can differ between runs. A fixed viewport and a wait for the relevant page state can improve consistency, but do not assume captures at different times or on different machines will be pixel-identical.
Run it once by hand
In PowerShell, from the project directory, run:
node .capture.jsConfirm that a PNG appears in the screenshots folder. Use absolute paths when configuring the scheduled task; scheduled runs may not start in the project folder as an interactive PowerShell session does.
3. Schedule the script in Windows Task Scheduler

Open Task Scheduler and create a task. Add a time-based trigger for the required recurrence, such as daily or weekly. The available trigger should match how often you need the capture.

Set the trigger’s start date and time. For an interval-based repeat, configure the repeat interval in the trigger’s advanced settings.

Add an action to start a program. Set Program/script to the full path of the Node.js executable, such as

Set Add arguments to the full path of the script, for example
"C:UsersYourNamewebsite-capturecapture.js". Set Start in to the project folder, for exampleC:UsersYourNamewebsite-capture. -
Save the task, then check its next-run time in Task Scheduler. Windows’ time-based scheduling depends on the machine’s configured time zone; set that computer to India Standard Time and verify the displayed next run against the intended Indian local time.

Run the task manually once from Task Scheduler. Check the output folder and the task’s history for a successful run before leaving it unattended.
Microsoft documents Task Scheduler triggers and the schtasks command’s schedule options, including /sc for schedule type, /st for start time, and /ri for repeat interval. See Task Triggers and schtasks /create. The exact next-run display on the target PC is the practical check for its time-zone configuration.
4. Keep unattended runs dependable

Power and availability: A PC that is asleep or powered off may not run a capture at the intended time. Choose power settings and task conditions appropriate to whether the machine must wake to run.

Account and folder access: The task’s run identity needs permission to execute Node.js and read the project files and write to the output folder. Test using the same account and task configuration.

Paths and working directory: Use full paths for the executable and script, and set the task’s Start in folder. Relative paths can otherwise point somewhere unexpected.

Retention: Timestamped screenshots accumulate. Decide how long to keep them and periodically remove old files, or use a fixed output filename if retaining a history is unnecessary.

Credentials and sensitive pages: Do not put secrets directly into a script. Capture authenticated or private pages only when the files and task account are protected appropriately.
5. Troubleshoot common failures

| Task reports success, but no image appears | The script wrote to a different working directory, or the task identity cannot write to the output folder. | Use an absolute output path, set Start in, confirm folder permissions, and inspect the task history and script logs. |
| Browser executable is missing | The Playwright browser runtime was not installed for the project’s installed version, or the scheduled environment cannot access it. | Install the required browser runtime as directed for that Playwright version, then run the script under the same Windows account used by the task. |
| Navigation times out | The website is slow, unreachable, or does not reach the selected wait condition within the timeout. | Check that the target URL opens from the machine. Review whether networkidle is appropriate for that page and adjust the wait strategy or timeout to the page’s behavior. |
| The task runs at an unexpected hour | The Windows time zone or trigger start time does not match the intended local schedule. | Confirm the machine is set to India Standard Time, review the trigger, and check the next-run time displayed by Task Scheduler. |

Does the screenshot script itself set the recurrence?
No. The script performs a capture each time it runs; Windows Task Scheduler determines when it runs.
Can the same workflow create a PDF instead of a PNG?
Playwright’s Page screenshot method is for image output. This article’s script saves a PNG; use a PDF-capable capture workflow if PDF output is required.
