Use three checks, not one: YouTube’s Live Control Room or API for ingest and stream health, VPS monitoring for the encoder and host, and an occasional check of the public watch page for actual playback. Send alerts from your monitors to a phone notification app such as ntfy, then test that the alerts arrive. YouTube showing that it receives data does not prove the encoder, VPS, and viewer experience are all healthy.
Monitor three separate parts of the stream
- YouTube ingest: Check whether YouTube is receiving the encoder’s data and whether it reports stream-health or configuration problems.
- The VPS and encoder: Check that the encoder is running and making progress, and that the host and network can keep sending data.
- Viewer playback: Occasionally open the public watch page and confirm the stream plays. Ingest status and a healthy server do not test every viewer’s playback.
These checks answer different questions. A process can remain present while making no useful progress; a healthy VPS can still fail to deliver a healthy stream to YouTube.

Live Control Room
YouTube’s Live Control Room reports stream health and real-time metrics while a stream is running. YouTube describes stream status as including specific error messages with instructions, making it a useful operator-facing view of the incoming stream. YouTube’s stream-health guidance
Live Streaming API
For an automated check, Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a liveStream resource with status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus. Documented stream-status values include active, created, error, inactive, and ready. Health-status values include good, ok, bad, and noData; health issues may include a type, severity, reason, and description.

active indicates that YouTube’s servers are receiving data from the encoder. Check health details alongside that status: receiving data is not the same as confirming every configuration or playback issue is absent. ready or created should not be treated as equivalent to an active stream. noData means YouTube has no health information at that moment, not proof that the VPS is down. Correlate the time with local logs and other checks. Google also documents retrieving a monitor stream player for broadcast workflows in its broadcast lifecycle guide.
Monitor the encoder and VPS separately
Build checks around signals that can fail independently. For a small FFmpeg or similar encoder setup, start with the service manager or watchdog and logs already available on the VPS; add a broader monitoring stack only if its maintenance is justified.

- Encoder state: Record whether the process is running, its exit code, and restart history.
- Progress: Check that progress advances over time, not merely that a process exists. A progress signal or fresh log timestamp can help reveal a stuck encoder.
- Host resources: Monitor CPU, memory, disk space, and sustained resource pressure relevant to your encoder and workload.
- Network and sending: Watch outbound connectivity errors and whether the encoder is still sending data.
- YouTube status: Correlate stream-status and health changes with VPS events and log timestamps.
An existing Prometheus and Grafana installation could use the community YouTube monitoring dashboard as a starting point. Its listing calls for a YouTube exporter and API key. Confirm that the exporter, permissions, and dashboard remain maintained and compatible before relying on them; this is a community contribution, not an official YouTube product or a reliability guarantee.
Get alerts on your phone with Uptime Kuma and ntfy
One documented route is to send Uptime Kuma notifications to ntfy. ntfy provides Android and iOS apps for phone notifications, and its integration guide explains how to configure Uptime Kuma. - Create monitors: Add checks for the failure signals that matter to you: encoder state or progress, host or connectivity, and YouTube-side status if you have an API-based check.
- Set up the notification: In Uptime Kuma’s notification configuration, enter the ntfy topic, server URL, and priority described in the integration instructions.
- Test delivery: Send a test notification and confirm it reaches your phone over the network you normally use.
- Apply it to monitors: Attach the notification to each relevant monitor and verify that a monitor state change triggers an alert.
- Include useful context: Put the failed check, event time, and location of the logs or dashboard in the alert where your configuration permits.
On Android, ntfy documents priority-based behavior: default priority or higher can produce sound or vibration, while high or urgent priority can appear as a pop-over. Actual presentation depends on app and device notification settings, so check phone permissions rather than assuming every alert will appear identically.
