To schedule recurring website screenshots with Browserless, configure an external scheduler to send a token-authenticated POST request to Browserless’s /screenshot REST endpoint. Put the target URL and capture settings in the JSON request body, then route the returned image data to storage or a notification step. Browserless documents this pattern with Schedule by Zapier, a webhook action, and an optional Gmail step.
Build the recurring screenshot workflow
- Get a Browserless API token. The screenshot API requires token authentication. Keep the token in the scheduler or webhook configuration’s protected settings where available; do not expose a real token in a public workflow or shared screenshot.
- Choose an external scheduler. In the documented Zapier example, add a Schedule by Zapier trigger and choose the recurrence you need. The example uses an hourly schedule; that is an example, not a recommendation for every site.
- Add a webhook POST action. Configure it to call Browserless’s
/screenshotendpoint, passing the token as a query parameter and a JSON body with the target URL and desired capture options. - Choose what happens to the image. The response contains image data. The Browserless Zapier example adds Gmail as an optional delivery step; in your workflow, use the storage or notification service that fits your use case.
- Test before relying on the schedule. Confirm the page loads and that the screenshot includes the content you need. For delayed or lazy-loaded content, configure an appropriate wait or scrolling behavior before enabling recurring runs.
Browserless’s documented example uses a JSON body with full-page capture and PNG output. Its REST documentation describes PNG as the default image response and also supports JPEG and WebP. The exact settings depend on the page and what you plan to do with the image.

Choose capture settings for the page
Page, format, and dimensions
The request can target a URL or provide raw HTML. Available screenshot options described by Browserless include full-page capture, image type and quality, clipping, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, and selecting an element. Use a clip when you need a fixed region, or an element selector when you need one specific component rather than the whole page.
Wait for the content you need
Pages can render content after the initial navigation. Browserless documents waits based on events, functions, selectors, or timeouts, along with navigation options. For an element capture, waiting for the relevant selector can help avoid capturing before it appears. Choose a condition tied to the content you need rather than assuming the page is ready as soon as navigation starts.

Handle lazy-loaded content
Some pages load images and other elements only as the visitor scrolls. Browserless documents scrollPage: true as a way to trigger lazy loading; pairing it with full-page capture may help on long pages. The result still depends on the target site’s behavior, so inspect test images at the top, middle, and bottom of a long page before scheduling repeated captures.
Decide whether a REST request is enough
Browserless describes /screenshot as a single-request browser task. It is a natural fit when each scheduled run needs only to load a page and capture it. If the workflow must interact with the page first, Browserless also documents WebSocket connections for direct CDP, Playwright, or Puppeteer access. Its examples cover Puppeteer, Playwright, and BAP connection patterns; the documentation does not provide comparative performance or cost benchmarks for these approaches.

Troubleshoot failed or incomplete captures
| What you see | Possible cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Blank or white image | The page may not have rendered as expected, or the site may be blocking automation. | Check the target URL and page readiness conditions, then test a suitable wait or navigation option. If the page appears blocked, investigate the target’s access controls. |
| CAPTCHA or access-denied/403 page | The target may be challenging or blocking automated access. | Confirm the page is accessible under the conditions you intend to capture. Browserless points to its separate /unblock API for certain anti-bot scenarios, but that is not a guarantee that every target can be captured. |
| Missing images or page elements | Content may load asynchronously or only after scrolling. | Wait for a relevant selector or other documented readiness condition. For lazy-loaded content, test scrolling before capture and verify the resulting image. |
| The scheduled run does not produce a usable image | The scheduler, webhook action, request configuration, or downstream delivery step may not be set up correctly. | Test each workflow step independently: confirm the recurrence fires, the POST reaches the endpoint with authentication and a valid JSON body, the response contains image data, and the chosen storage or notification action accepts it. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you want the screenshot API call without configuring Browserless, an external scheduler can trigger ScreenshotNeo’s one-request endpoint. For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Plan for reliable recurring captures
- Match the schedule to the purpose. An hourly trigger is just one documented example. Select a cadence that suits the monitoring task and the target site.
- Check the image, not just the workflow status. A successful scheduled run does not by itself prove the page rendered completely or that a blocking screen was not captured.
- Expect target pages to change. If the site changes its loading behavior or access controls, revisit waits, selectors, and scrolling settings.
- Keep cost assumptions evidence-based. The reviewed Browserless documentation does not provide a comparative cost or performance benchmark for REST screenshots versus WebSocket browser automation.
