For a scheduled stream, prepare the event in YouTube Studio, configure an encoder with its stream URL and key, and decide whether a person or YouTube’s API will take the broadcast live. If “playlist” means local video files, FFmpeg can join them; if it means a YouTube playlist, that is a different workflow.
Know what cron, YouTube, and “playlist” each mean
This workflow has separate parts: cron runs a command on the Ubuntu machine; an encoder sends video and audio to YouTube; and a YouTube broadcast is scheduled and made live. Starting an encoder does not by itself prove that YouTube has accepted the stream or that a scheduled broadcast has gone live.

Local media playlist
If you mean a sequence of video files stored on the Ubuntu machine, an FFmpeg script can prepare or concatenate those inputs and send an encoded stream to YouTube. The right concatenation method depends on the files’ compatibility and whether re-encoding is acceptable.
YouTube playlist
If you mean a playlist of existing YouTube videos, do not treat it as a local FFmpeg input list or assume it can be scheduled as a live broadcast. The YouTube Live Streaming API describes broadcasts and stream resources; it does not establish that an ordinary channel playlist can be turned into a live stream.

Prepare the YouTube broadcast and encoder
- Schedule or create the broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, prepare the stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a scheduled event, an encoder connection, a preview, and the “Go live” action. Decide which part will be handled manually and which, if any, will be automated. See YouTube’s encoder setup and live-stream instructions.
- Configure the encoder. Use the server URL and stream key shown for the relevant YouTube stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder guidance. It lists H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s published settings guidance, not a verified FFmpeg command for every input. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Protect the key. Do not put a real stream key in a public script, shared repository, or article. Restrict access to any configuration file containing it, and use the stream key associated with the broadcast you intend to run.
- Test the handoff. Start the encoder manually first. Confirm that YouTube shows a preview and determine how the broadcast transitions to live before relying on cron. For unattended operation, explicitly plan the YouTube-side action as well as the local process; the YouTube Live Streaming API is an optional development route for managing broadcast and stream resources, not a requirement for simply scheduling a local command.
Build a local media playlist with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents two main concat approaches. The concat demuxer may avoid re-encoding when the container and input streams are suitable. The concat filter is designed for concatenation when re-encoding is needed. Inputs must be compatible with the selected approach; test with the actual files rather than assuming that any collection of videos will join cleanly. FFmpeg’s concat FAQ explains the distinction.
For several playlists, a maintainable design is usually one script or configuration per stream, or one dispatcher that selects which playlist to run. Choose based on whether jobs overlap, whether they need separate broadcasts or keys, and whether the machine can handle the combined processing and network load. Those factors depend on the particular host and setup.

Schedule commands in India time with cron
A crontab entry has five time fields—minute, hour, day of month, month, and weekday—followed by the command. Entries run as the user who owns that crontab, and cron checks entries every minute. Ubuntu’s Noble documentation describes CRON_TZ; support and behavior depend on the installed cron implementation and release. India’s IANA time zone is Asia/Kolkata.

Replace the times and paths, create the scripts and log directory, and confirm CRON_TZ support using the manual for the cron package installed on the target system. Verify the schedule and environment
- If per-crontab timezone support is unavailable or uncertain, configure the host timezone intentionally and verify the installed package’s behavior. Cron logs may use the daemon’s local timezone even when a schedule has a separate timezone.
- Cron runs with a limited environment compared with an interactive shell. Use stable absolute paths and explicitly define the environment your script needs.
- Test the timezone and execution time with a harmless command that writes a timestamp to a log before scheduling a live stream.
- If both day-of-month and weekday fields are restricted, ordinary cron semantics treat either matching field as a trigger; do not assume both must match.
- Check that simultaneous jobs will not exceed the machine’s capacity or conflict with the YouTube broadcasts and stream resources you prepared.
Make each scheduled stream observable and recoverable
Cron can start a process, but it cannot confirm that the encoder connected, that YouTube accepted the stream, or that the broadcast went live. Validate those outcomes yourself and design for failure rather than treating a scheduled job as proof of a working stream.
- Send standard output and errors to per-job logs, as in the illustrative entries above; inspect logs after manual and scheduled tests.
- Check the script’s exit status and whether the encoder remains active for the intended duration.
- Prevent duplicate runs from starting competing encoder processes, and define how each stream should stop.
- Test each playlist separately before testing overlapping schedules. Confirm that the machine has enough CPU, memory, and bandwidth for the actual inputs and number of simultaneous streams.
- Plan how you will detect and respond to a dropped connection or a broadcast that fails to transition live; cron alone does not provide that confirmation.

No. Cron starts a local command. Prepare the broadcast in YouTube Studio or manage it through the Live Streaming API.

Can I schedule an existing YouTube playlist as a live stream?
The documented live-stream workflow covers broadcasts and stream resources, not turning an ordinary YouTube playlist into a live broadcast.
