Then select that channel, write your post, and either add it to the channel’s next queue slot or choose a specific date and time. Buffer says scheduled posts publish automatically at the selected time.
How do I start scheduling my Mastodon posts?
- Join a Mastodon server. Create an account on a server that is accepting new sign-ups. A Mastodon account belongs to a server, also called an instance; you need the account before you can connect it to Buffer. Buffer says it can connect to any server running Mastodon software. Buffer’s Mastodon setup guide explains the connection process.
- Connect the account in Buffer. Add Mastodon as a channel and authorize your account on its server. The connected channel will then appear as a destination in Buffer’s composer.
- Select the Mastodon channel and compose. Write your post and add supported media or a link if needed. Check the character counter: Buffer says the limit depends on the server. It reads the limit from the connected server when possible and uses 500 characters as a default when it cannot read it.
- Choose when it should publish. Add the post to the queue for the next open slot, or set a specific date and time for that post. Buffer’s scheduling instructions describe both options.
- Review the channel schedule. Check the selected channel and its timezone before scheduling. Each channel has its own timezone and recurring weekly schedule; queueing uses the next open slot in that schedule. See Buffer’s posting-schedule settings.
Queue slot or exact time: which should you choose?
| Option | What Buffer does | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Queue | Places the post in the next open slot on the channel’s recurring weekly schedule. | Posts that can go out at the next available scheduled time. |
| Specific date and time | Sets a custom publication time for that individual post. | Announcements or other posts that need a particular time. |
Both approaches schedule the post for automatic publishing, according to Buffer. Confirm the intended channel, date, time, and timezone in the composer before you save it.

What can you publish to Mastodon through Buffer?
Buffer documents support for text posts, links, images, GIFs, and video. It also provides a Content Warning field in the composer. Poll creation through Buffer is not supported, so create a poll another way if you need one.
Mentions, hashtags, and links
- Mentions: Enter the full account address, such as
@[email protected]. Buffer says it cannot autocomplete or verify usernames, so check the address carefully. - Hashtags: Buffer says hashtags can help people searching for a tag discover a post. Its guidance allows letters, numbers, and underscores, but a hashtag cannot consist only of numbers.
- Links: Start a link with
http://orhttps://for Buffer to treat it as a link. Buffer counts links as 23 characters regardless of their length and discourages link shorteners.
Threads and mobile support
Buffer’s Mastodon-specific help page says a thread can contain up to 25 sub-posts and describes thread creation on the web. It describes mobile support as limited to rescheduling or deleting threads created on the web. However, Buffer’s newer general mobile-scheduling guidance says threads can be created in the iOS app and in Android beta. Because the instructions differ, check the current capabilities of your app and account if you plan to compose a thread on mobile. Buffer’s Mastodon help page lists threads on Free, Essentials, and Team plans.

What should you check if a scheduled post does not fit or publish?
- The post exceeds the displayed character limit: The limit is server-specific. Buffer uses 500 characters as a default only when it cannot read the server’s limit; shorten the post or verify the limit for your connected server.
- The post is set for the wrong time: Check the channel’s timezone and weekly schedule. A queued post uses the next open slot, while a custom date and time applies only to that individual post.
- A mention is incorrect: Buffer does not autocomplete or verify Mastodon usernames. Confirm the full address yourself.
- You are trying to add a poll: Buffer’s Mastodon support guide says poll creation is unavailable through Buffer.
- You have reached the posting cap: Buffer’s help page states a limit of 100 posts per 24 hours.
- You are looking for a recommended best time: Buffer says Analyze’s “best time to post” feature is not available for Mastodon.
Can I schedule Mastodon posts to publish automatically?
Yes. Buffer’s product page describes automatic publishing at the scheduled time. Its Mastodon scheduling launch announcement, published by Product Marketing Manager Mike Eckstein on January 31, 2023, said: “Today we are rolling out support for Mastodon scheduling within Buffer.” That announcement marks the feature’s launch; current limits and availability are documented in Buffer’s support and pricing pages.
