Choose the image type before resizing: Mastodon’s current documentation lists profile avatars as downscaled to 400×400 pixels and headers to 1500×500, while post images have a separate 16MB and 8.3-megapixel limit. You can resize or crop images with a free image editor; there is no single required source dimension for every upload.
Mastodon image sizes and upload limits
Mastodon documents different rules for profile images and images attached to posts. The profile guide specifies output downscaling targets, not mandatory dimensions for the file you upload. The post guide instead sets a file-size limit and a pixel-count ceiling; it does not prescribe one preferred width and height.

These are the limits listed in Mastodon’s profile documentation and posting documentation, as available on October 9, 2026. Servers can be configured differently, so a particular instance may reject a file that fits these published limits.

Avatar: crop to a square
In a free image editor, crop the image to a 1:1 square. Keep the face, logo, or other essential detail near the center, since small avatar displays leave less room for detail. Export in a listed profile format and keep the file below 2MB. Mastodon documents that the uploaded image is downscaled to 400×400; it does not require the original upload to have exactly those dimensions.

Profile header: use a 3:1 canvas
Crop or resize the composition to a 3:1 shape, such as 1500×500 pixels. Arrange important content within the area you want visible, and preview it after uploading: the documentation gives the downscaling target but does not promise identical display cropping across clients. Use WEBP, PNG, GIF, or JPG and keep the file below 2MB.
Post image: stay within both limits
Choose dimensions that suit the artwork and how you want it to appear. The documented 8.3-megapixel ceiling is not a required target size. Keep the file at or under the documented 16MB limit and export as PNG, JPG, HEIF, WEBP, or AVIF. Mastodon’s guide allows up to four images in one post.

GIF attachment: account for conversion
The posting guide lists GIF attachments separately: under 1 megapixel, with a 16MB file limit. Mastodon converts GIFs to soundless MP4; static GIF files are subject to the same limits. The guide gives 1280×720 parenthetically, but that resolution is approximately 0.92 megapixels, so check the pixel count rather than treating the dimensions as permission to exceed the stated ceiling.

- Identify the upload type. Decide whether you are preparing an avatar, header, ordinary post image, or GIF attachment; the corresponding limits differ.
- Crop or resize. Use a square crop for an avatar, a 3:1 crop for a header, and suitable dimensions for post art while observing the 8.3-megapixel limit. For GIFs, stay under one megapixel.
- Choose a supported format. Confirm the format is accepted for that upload type; profile images and post attachments do not have identical format lists.
- Check output size and pixel count. A file’s size in megabytes and its pixel dimensions are separate measures. A small compressed file can still exceed a pixel-count ceiling.
- Upload and review. Check how the image appears on your profile or post. If the upload is rejected, consult your instance’s rules or administrator, because server configuration may change the limits you encounter.
Choosing a free image resizer
Any suitable free editor can work; Mastodon does not endorse a particular resizer in the cited documentation. Before uploading an image to a browser-based editor, consider its privacy practices. For any option, check whether it lets you set a crop or aspect ratio, choose an accepted export format, and verify the resulting pixel dimensions and file size. Free tiers may have restrictions, so confirm that the controls you need are available without payment.

Why a file can meet one limit and fail another
Megabytes measure the stored file size; megapixels measure the total number of pixels. Compression can reduce file size without reducing pixel dimensions, so a post image may be under 16MB but exceed 8.3 megapixels. Conversely, an image can be small in pixel dimensions but exceed the file limit if it is saved in a large or lightly compressed format. Check both values where Mastodon documents both.
