To schedule different OBS playlists during a 24/7 YouTube stream, put each content block in its own OBS scene, then use Advanced Scene Switcher macros with date/time conditions to change scenes on schedule. YouTube Studio schedules and manages the broadcast; it does not schedule OBS’s local playlist rotation. For a continuous channel, you must also plan for stream-session boundaries, outages, and recovery.
Choose how the schedule should work
First decide whether you want a clock-based schedule or sequential playback. A clock-based schedule changes content at fixed times—for example, a morning playlist and an evening playlist. A sequential schedule plays one set until it ends, then moves to the next. OBS’s VLC Video source can play an ordered or shuffled playlist and loop it, but a playlist alone does not switch content at a particular time. For clock-based changes, use separate scenes and a scene-switching automation tool.

- Clock-based: use one scene for each scheduled block and create time-based macros.
- Sequential: arrange the media in the intended order and use playlist or media-source behavior to move through it; test what happens at the end of each list.
- Mixed: use a playlist within each scene, then schedule scene changes for the larger blocks.
Prepare files and build OBS playlists
- Organize the media. Decide which files belong in each block. Keep them in stable local paths and use clear, consistent names for scenes and sources. OBS supports local media playback. OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Add a playlist source. In the scene where a block should play, add a VLC Video source and add the files in the desired order. Choose whether the playlist should loop or shuffle. The VLC source requires VLC to be installed; a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. OBS VLC Video Source documentation.
- Use a standard Media Source for a single file. If a scene plays one video repeatedly rather than a playlist, add a Media Source and enable its Loop option. OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Create a scene for each scheduled block. Add the relevant playlist source to each scene. Include overlays or audio sources that should accompany that block, and make their behavior consistent across scenes where needed.
- Check the transitions. Preview each scene and confirm that the right files play, audio is audible, and overlays appear as intended. Do not assume that a missing file, finished playlist, or source error will be handled the way you want without testing it.
Automate clock-based scene changes
Advanced Scene Switcher can run macros using conditions and actions, including date/time conditions and scene actions. Its listed version 1.36.1 supports OBS 31.1.1 or later; verify the current release’s compatibility with your installed OBS version before installing or updating. Advanced Scene Switcher project and release information.
- Install a compatible Advanced Scene Switcher release and restart OBS if the installer requires it.
- Open the plugin’s macro controls in OBS and create one macro for each schedule boundary. For example, a morning-to-evening change needs a macro that selects the evening scene at the chosen time.
- Set the macro condition to the intended date/time rule and the action to switch to the corresponding scene. Repeat for each boundary, checking that the target scene and time are correct.
- Test every macro by triggering it manually if the plugin permits, then observe at least one representative scheduled transition. Also check what happens when OBS starts after a boundary has passed.
- Back up the OBS scene collection and plugin settings before upgrades. Re-test the schedule after changing OBS or the plugin.
Automation features do not guarantee unattended uptime. Test a missing file, an ended playlist, an OBS restart, a network interruption, and a scene change near a broadcast-session boundary. Keep an alert and recovery plan available.

Schedule the YouTube broadcast separately
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast. Configure OBS with the YouTube stream URL and stream key, then start the encoder feed. For a scheduled encoder broadcast, YouTube’s workflow is to start the feed, wait for the preview, and click Go live in Live Control Room. Scheduling is useful for promotion, but the OBS scenes and playlists still control which local media is sent. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time on a channel may take up to 24 hours. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Treat the broadcast object and the encoder stream as separate pieces: YouTube manages the scheduled broadcast, while OBS supplies the video and audio. Google’s API documentation describes broadcasts and streams as separate resources that can be bound; API automation can manage broadcast resources but does not configure local OBS playlist playback. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveBroadcasts and YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams.

Plan for session boundaries and archives
YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived in the same way. If your aim is continuous 24/7 programming, verify current YouTube behavior and plan how you will handle successive sessions or another supported arrangement. Test the handoff so it does not unexpectedly interrupt a scheduled scene or leave OBS sending to a broadcast that has ended. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot common failures
- VLC Video source is missing: install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. A 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC; restart OBS after installation.
- A playlist item does not play: confirm the file still exists at its saved path and can be opened locally. Keep media in stable locations and test every item before going live.
- The wrong scene stays on screen: verify the macro’s time condition, target scene, and whether the macro is enabled. Test the transition and inspect behavior after an OBS restart.
- A playlist ends unexpectedly: check its order and loop or shuffle settings. Test the end-of-list behavior for each scene rather than assuming the next scene will start automatically.
- The scheduled broadcast has no preview: confirm OBS is sending to the correct YouTube stream URL and key, start the encoder feed, and wait for YouTube’s preview. For a scheduled encoder broadcast, select Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready.
- The stream stops during a long run: check whether the YouTube broadcast/session ended, whether the network dropped, or whether OBS restarted. Confirm that the next session is supported and that OBS is connected to its intended broadcast.
- A plugin stops working after an update: check its current OBS-version requirements, restore a backup of the scene collection or settings if needed, and re-test the complete schedule before relying on it.
