Browshot’s command-line tool performs the capture; Task Scheduler starts it at the time you choose.
What you need before scheduling
- A Browshot account and API key for making captures.
- Browshot’s Windows command-line tool,
browshot-cmd.exe, available on the computer that will run the task. - The target website URL, the Browshot instance you intend to use, and a local folder for any downloaded output.
- Windows Task Scheduler access to create or import a task.
Browshot documents a Windows workflow based on the command-line tool and an editable XML task file. Its documentation does not prescribe a particular local folder layout or a credential-storage policy, so adapt those details to your setup. Keep your API key private; do not publish it in a shared task file or example. See Browshot’s Windows command-line documentation.

Set up the daily task in Windows

Make the Browshot command available
Install or otherwise place
browshot-cmd.exewhere the scheduled task can access it. If you usebrowshot-cmd.exe.configfor defaults, review the configured values: Browshot saysbrowshot-cmd.exe --helpcan display them. Edit Browshot’s example XML
Start with
browshot-schedule.xmlfrom Browshot’s Windows documentation. Edit the folder and the command arguments at the end of the task file to match your local paths and intended capture. Import the task
Open Windows Task Scheduler and import the edited XML task. The exact import menu wording can differ between Windows versions; use Task Scheduler’s import-task action and select your edited XML file.

Set the daily trigger
In the imported task’s settings, choose a daily recurrence and the start time you want. Browshot’s example uses Task Scheduler for the frequency and start time; those settings belong to the task, not to a special Browshot scheduling service.

Run it once and inspect the result
Start the task manually from Task Scheduler. Confirm that it completes, that the screenshot is saved or hosted where you expect, and that the task shows the next scheduled run. Resolve any path, permission, credential, or argument problems before relying on the unattended schedule.

Make each run capture the state you intend
Choose a fresh capture rather than a cached result
Browshot’s API documentation describes a default screenshot cache window of 24 hours and documents cache=0 to request a new screenshot. Since a daily record is useful only if it reflects the intended run, check the current API behavior and include the appropriate cache setting in the command arguments. A run made within the documented cache window may otherwise return a cached screenshot rather than create a new one. See Browshot’s API documentation.

Choose page size and rendering wait
The API documents options for screen or full-page capture, browser dimensions, a delay after page load for JavaScript-heavy pages, and a maximum wait. Select the output mode and dimensions that make sense for your record, and allow enough rendering time for the content you need. Browshot also documents optional CSS-selector targeting when the capture should focus on a particular element.
Run page scripts only when needed
If the desired visible state requires JavaScript, Browshot documents loading a script after page load and before capture. The script must finish within the request’s configured delay. The documentation describes a 10-second example delay limit for this feature; verify the current limit for the endpoint or instance you use before depending on it.

Decide where screenshots go
Scheduling and storage are separate decisions. Browshot documents options to host screenshots or thumbnails through Browshot/CDN or S3; S3 hosting requires a bucket. The documentation does not establish a retention or backup policy for your files, so decide how long to keep daily captures and how to preserve them if the history matters.
Other ways to invoke a capture
The documented automatic Windows example is Browshot’s command-line tool with an imported Task Scheduler task. Browshot also documents calling its API from the command line with curl; that invokes a capture but is not the same as configuring a recurring schedule. Outside Windows, use an operating-system scheduler to invoke the command or API on a daily basis, and verify its syntax and credential handling for that environment. Troubleshooting a missed or incorrect screenshot
- The task does not start: Check the task’s enabled state, daily trigger, start time, and the Windows account under which it runs. Verify that the account can access the executable, configuration, and output folder.
- The command runs but produces no expected file: Review the edited command arguments and local output path. Confirm the task account has permission to write there and that the command is using the intended instance and target URL.
- The image looks like yesterday’s capture: Review the cache parameter. Browshot documents a 24-hour default cache window and
cache=0for a fresh screenshot; check the current API behavior for your request. - Dynamic content is missing: Increase the render delay or maximum wait as appropriate, and ensure any required page script completes within the configured delay. Check whether the selected screen/full-page mode and selector match the desired content.
- Scheduled and manual runs behave differently: Compare the Windows account and working paths used by each run. A scheduled task may not have the same access to configuration files or folders as an interactive session.
